Introduction As modern surveying equipment and methods have evolved, LSS has also developed much more functionality in order to make the most of the techniques available. This is especially true when it comes to data acquisition, field coding and transfer from survey instruments. McCarthy Taylor Systems Ltd has striven to ensure that LSS surveyors are able to make the most of the options available. This manual has been prepared to help with the configuration of both the survey instrument hardware and LSS software. In our experience software options are often only used in their simplest forms particularly when combined with data transfer. This document aims to uncover the more powerful aspects of the use of LSS combined with the Trimble Access (it also contains information on the older Survey Controller - henceforth called Trimble SC or simply SC). This document assumes the use of LSSv10 and the information is based on default installation/configuration settings and shows the principles and intricacies of the system from any perspective or knowledge base. We hope that this document meets all your expectations, but if you feel that it has fallen short in any way please let us know so that we may improve its structure and content. Page 3 of 35

Chapter 1 LSS install 1.1 Install LSS, 3D Vision, Tutorials and Testdata Select Install LSS & Test Data For a new install use Full LSS Install and Dongle Drivers Also choose Enhanced Testdata which includes examples of Point Cloud data and the files we use in our specialist training courses. Page 4 of 35

Chapter 2 Trimble installs 2.1 The Trimble element of the LSS install The LSSv10 install procedure now automatically provides the software and files required to process Trimble Access data Trimble Job reader a. GPS for OSTN - the SGF files etc b. Includes Trimble SC capability as well as Access Export Points, Lines, DTM, and alignments a. All of the above as LandXML b. The DTM in TTM format c. The Points as a Job file (now a legacy option) Export Feature list as FXL Code Library Note: The only element that should also be required is the Update Office install to update the firmware version of Access on your PC to match the version on the controller. Update Office procedures are therefore also needed following a firmware upgrade. If there is a mismatch between the firmware versions of controller to PC it will be typically indicated by Trimble error dialogs during processing (there is no generic error dialog because the problems encountered are dependent upon the upgrade content). Examples of this are; a) could not find converters b) ''Database Version Wrong, Expect , Actual: '' Updating Trimble Office Update Office can be accessed via the LSS website; Support-Files/Trimble Either of two methods can be employed; a) Access Controller link under "Having problems?" which links to the Trimble website; b) TIM website (Trimble Installation Manager) which, if you have sufficient administrator rights, can be used to update all your Trimble software (including the controller firmware) in one go. Page 6 of 35

2.1.5 Further files from the LSS DVD/ Installation flash drive or website LSS_with_Trimble_Access PDF (This document) which explains how to configure and use your Trimble instrument with LSS. Note: For a full practical training course on the subject of connecting Trimble equipment with LSS please contact us to discuss your requirements or book from our training calendar on the LSS website. Example Feature Library - created in LSS from the LSS Prototype legend 2.2 First time running of a Trimble data conversion Included Trimble programs AsciiFileGenerator Trimble Link Engine Note: The first time Trimble data is processed on a PC, LSS will detect whether these programs are installed. If not, the user is prompted to exit LSS after which the install will happen automatically. Rerunning the data processing should then work Activation of Trimble programs On the first run of a Trimble Link process LSS will automatically activate Trimble Link. On each subsequent run LSS will check that the installed Trimble Link is the latest version and silently install the latest if required. If all the above is confirmed LSS will then automatically check (and create where necessary) the registry entries for Trimble Link to be able use the GPS Coordinate Systems. 2.3 Coordinate systems (GPS processing) Transformation and Geoid models Both AsciiFileGenerator and Trimble Link Engine require access to the datum grid files, transformation, geoid model files and projection shift grid files that are referenced in the Job file. These files must exist on the PC in the Geodata folder for the process to complete. The path for this is held in the registry. <LSS install Drive letter>:\programdata\trimble\geodata\ During the LSS install the registry entry is created and populated with the Trimble default if it does not already exist. Both AsciiFileGenerator and Trimble Link are 32bit programs and therefore use the 32bit registry entry. The registry entries used are The native registry entry is i.e. both 32bit and 64bit HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Trimble\Share\CurrentGeoDataDirectory The registry entry for the 32bit version on a 64 bit PC is Page 7 of 35

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Trimble\Share\CurrentGeoDataDirectory Coordinate files The following coordinate system files are then copied to the Geodata folder, which is also created if it does not exist. These files relate to the OS system for the UK only and are; OSTN15.SGF, OSGM15.GGF OSTN02.SGF, OSGM02.GGF OSTN97.SGF OSGM91.GGF OSU91A.GGF OSi-NILA.DGF OSi-NILO.DGF OSi-OSNI.MRP Note: If installs of other Trimble software occur at a later date they will use the same registry entries to access the relevant Geodata folder even if this is on a different drive to the Trimble software. Page 8 of 35

Chapter 3 LSS configuration 3.1 Configure logger within LSS To configure LSS to read data from a Trimble SC LSS click New (or if other loggers already exist click Change followed by New on the subsequent Loggers list page). Select Trimble as the format and enter a Description. Click Next. Select ActiveSync. Page 9 of 35

If you are always going to be transferring the Job file from the instrument by another means than ActiveSync e.g. Data Card, then also tick the box No data transfer/download by default so that LSS will skip the data transfer page by default. Click OK. Note: Following the alteration of the logger list the adjacent dialog will appear when exiting the option. Clicking OK to Save will save the changes permanently to this PC. Page 10 of 35

3.2 Configure Hardware & System This menu option controls the default LSS settings within the registry on this PC. File Editor which application opens the browsed data file when the Edit button is clicked. Note: HiEditor is the recommended Editor for LSS and is installed with v10 and set as the default unless a previous version of LSS was already installed. In this case HiEditor will need to be selected here. New survey parameters holds the default settings for when a New survey is created; Control tolerances - for Control Observation warnings and errors. Target Height Load issues warnings if a target height is outside this range. Copy Prototype from an LSS model that contains a feature legend template and display settings. Note: the LSS model Prototype.LSS is available in the \Testdata\Prototype folder (see above) and if copied to, say, d:\<survey Folder>\Prototype it can be user-defined. Page 11 of 35

Save the configuration changes If a change is made then on return to the main dialog a Finish button will be offered. Click 'Finish' will offer the Configuration changes options. To save the changes select Save and click 'OK' when LSS will permanently save these settings on this PC. Page 12 of 35

Chapter 4 Trimble Access 4.1 Code Library A FXL code library needs to be copied to the instrument from LSS Either: The LSS example LSSv10Trimble.FXL (which was created from the LSS Prototype legend) can be found on the LSS media Support_Files\Trimble\Access\Code folder, or Or: Created directly from the user s own customised prototype legend using the LSS option Export / Upload code lists to survey instruments (see below). The selected FXL code library needs to be copied to the Trimble data\system files folder on the instrument. 4.2 Create a new Trimble Access job On the Trimble Access logger, select General Survey Click on Jobs then select New Job from the list. Page 13 of 35

Enter an alphanumeric Job name. Note: Specify a Template if required. A Template contains previously defined Job settings and can be set using Settings / Templates from the main menu. If a template is not defined then leave as Default. Click the Coord. sys. button and, unless otherwise required, select Scale Factor Only of value 1.0. Click the Units (Dist.) button and set the Eastings and Northings to the correct order and select metres. 4.3 Background map If required, click the Linked files button to select a CSV (Comma delimited), TXT (Text) or an existing SC Job file to over-display data. Again, if required, click the Background files button to select data for background display e.g. DXF. LandXML put the XML files into the Trimble data folder under the user Login name folder. This can be Observations (works as well as the Trimble Link export which maintains the Obs ID which the DXF cannot do DXF does give the obs as well but just not the Obs ID), Linework (works similar to DXF but no colours or linestyles), Triangles (works as well as the TTM format), Roads etc DXF the lack of Point IDs is balanced by the use of the map to pick the obs graphically Note: To create a DXF file from LSS use Export/Autocad DXF, type in the DXF file and select As per Configure/DTM Display and click OK. Then copy the DXF file to the Trimble data folder on the SC. Click the Feature library button and select the FXL file exported from LSS. Page 14 of 35

This can be copied from, either the LSS media \support_files\trimble\access\code\lssv10trimble.fxl (which was created from the LSS Testdata Prototype survey), or direct from LSS when a different prototype legend is required. The LSS option to create an FXL code library is Export / Upload code lists to survey instruments (see below). Copy the FXL to the System files folder The emulator folder is Program data\trimble\trimble access emulator\trimble data 4.4 Station set up Once a Job has been created, click Measure then select VX & S series Then select Station setup. Page 15 of 35

Enter the Instrument point name (Set-on station). This can be either selected from a List, or enter the name manually, together with the instrument height and coordinates. There is no need to enter a code at this stage. Click Accept Enter the Backsight point name. Again this can either be selected from a list or typed in. Type in the Backsight height (target height), then set the Azimuth. Ensure that the Method is set to Angles and distances Point the instrument and click Measure Note: There are 4 other set-up options; Station Setup Plus will be rarely if ever used, Resection, Refline, and Use Last which allows you to continue an existing setup within a Job. Check your Measurement values and Enter or Store to proceed or Redo if necessary. Note: Checks to known points are always useful at any time during the Survey Page 16 of 35

The instrument will display the measurement details. Once the Station Setup has been successfully completed select Measure / Measure Topo to start collecting topographic detail or Measure / Stakeout for setting-out. 4.5 Measure Topo Control observations - during detailing use the -ST reserved code. The station name should be added as either: the PointID, or appended to the code i.e. station A coded as '-STA' Page 17 of 35

Chapter 5 Survey Controller 5.1 Code Library A FXL code library needs to be copied to the instrument from LSS Either: The LSS example LSSv10Trimble.FXL (which was created from the LSS Prototype legend) can be found on the LSS media Support_Files\Trimble\Access\Code, or Or: Created directly from the users own customised prototype legend using the LSS option Export / Upload code lists to survey instruments (see below). The selected FXL code library needs to be copied to the Trimble data folder on the instrument. 5.2 Create a new Trimble SC job Note: This is not the same as a GDM Job file. Select <Files> / New job at the SC desktop menu. Enter an alphanumeric Job name. Note: Use the Alpha key, located just left of bottom Right, to switch between alpha and numeric. Click the Coord. sys. button and, unless otherwise required, select Scale Factor Only of value 1.0. Click the Units (Dist.) button and set the Eastings and Northings to the correct order and select metres. Click the Linked files button to select a CSV (Comma delimited), TXT (Text) or an existing SC Job files to over display data. Page 18 of 35

Click the Background files button to select data for background display e.g. DXF. Note: To create a DXF file from LSS use Export/Autocad DXF, type in the DXF file and select As per Configure/DTM Display and click OK. Then copy the DXF file to the Trimble data folder on the SC. Click the Feature library button and select the FXL file exported from LSS and copied to the instrument (see above). 5.3 Station set-up in Trimble SC Select Survey from the SC Desktop and the relevant LSS Survey Style. Note: New styles can be added via Configuration / Survey styles on the Trimble SC. Select Station setup Page 19 of 35

Provide Corrections if requested. To ignore these specify? for Pressure, Temperature and PPM and None for Curvature and Refraction. Provide the set-on and backsight stations from the list along with the instrument and backsight heights. Note: The stations can be either; 1) existing e.g. exported from LSS, in which case use the arrow to the right of the input boxes to select from the list, or 2) they can be defined as coordinates and azimuth during the set-up procedure itself. Note: The Instrument Height is measured to the cross on the side of the grey Instrument panel and the Backsight Target height might be a Detail Pole or additional Tripod mounted Target. Point the instrument and click Measure for a distance to the backsight Note: There are 3 other set-up options; Station Setup Plus will be rarely if ever be used, Resection can be useful in confined areas, and Use Last allows you to continue an existing setup. Check your Measurement values and Enter or Store to proceed or Redo if necessary. Note: Checks to known points are always useful at any time during the Survey Once the Station Setup has been successfully completed select Survey / Measure Topo to start collecting topographic detail or Survey / Stakeout for setting-out. Page 20 of 35

Chapter 6 Working in LSS 6.1 Create a new survey A survey must be open to process data into LSS. We will do this exercise in a new survey. Select File/New from the main menu. Click Browse against New survey. Create a new folder for the new survey to go in Select it in the Save in box Enter the survey name to File name. Click Save. This will return to the File New dialog with the path and name of the intended LSS survey. Enter Survey title (if left blank LSS will use the survey name). The prototype will be as per New Survey Parameters (see above). Click OK Page 21 of 35

6.2 Data processing Input/Download & Convert This option will download and convert survey data from Trimble SC. From the main menu select Input / Download/Convert. Select the required logger using the Change button. Note: Tick the Data transfer/download not required box if the Trimble Job file has already been copied to the PC. Otherwise follow the LSS connection by ActiveSync to Browse the Job file on the instrument. Click 'Next' Browse to the 'Trimble Job file' from the Trimble SC if you have not used the ActiveSync connection. Make sure the LSS load file input box is empty and Click 'Next' to automatically provide the next available load file number for the current survey. If you are using GPS equipment set the quality control values that you would like LSS to report to. Click 'OK' and LSS will create a Load file directly from the Job file. LSS will then prompt whether to Save and Load etc the newly created load file. Click 'OK' The 'Save and LOAD file' option will automatically invoke Input / Load and highlight the newly created load file. Note: If the load file name is for a survey that does not exist then the Save and Load option will create a new survey prior to Input/Load. Click 'OK' Page 22 of 35

6.3 Data processing Input/Load The LSS Load Input file is the format by which all external data is processed into LSS e.g. data from a survey instrument has to first be converted to a load file via the Input / Download & Convert option. Loading data into a survey model Once the conversion has completed and the load file has been created via Save and Load, LSS will automatically continue to the Input / Load option. The correct load file will be highlighted e.g..001 if Save and Load has been chosen. Leave the options as per default and click 'Next'. As the load file is processed so a report is produced showing all relevant information e.g. comments, setups and control observations. Any warnings or errors found in the data set will cause the processing to pause. An error will not allow Input/Load to complete. If the survey is empty and no station coordinates are provided prior to the first instrument set-up then an Initial Set-up dialog will be presented to verify the position and orientation. Click OK. If control observations have been made to an existing station then a table of differences is reported between the stored and observed coordinates. The 'Difference (slope distance)' is a 3D vector combining X, Y and Z. Page 23 of 35

Any misclosures that exceed the warning parameter are labelled Large differences, and Load will pause. Likewise for any that exceed the error parameter except that here Load will not complete. If available, Click 'Continue' then 'OK' to complete the load and display the data. This includes updating the triangulation to create a seamless DTM. 6.4 Export an FXL feature library An LSS legend can be exported to Trimble Access as a feature library in the following way. Open the survey containing the legend you wish to create as a code library. Select Export/Upload code list to survey instruments / Trimble FXL Library file (recommended). Provide the feature code library name. Point features - Select or 'Locate' the required point feature codes. Tick the box Use trailing digits as dimension attributes. Note: This option will take any point feature codes that have trailing digits with the same stub, e.g. PT1, PT2 etc and export them as feature PT with a dimension attribute. LSS requires that the legend also contains the stub as a feature in its own right. Page 24 of 35

Link features - Select or 'Locate' the required link features. 'Tree features' - Tick the Tree features tick box and 'Select' one of each of the spread and trunk features e.g. PD1 and PS1 as per the LSS prototype. 'LSS reserved codes + extras' - Leave the box ticked to include all the Reserved codes etc. Note: This option will also export the String codes.a - Add new string,.p - Loop to first point,.t - Terminate string..j - Join to previous is still used but is now a point feature. Click OK. Type the feature library name and click Save. Copy the created FXL file to the Trimble data folder on the SC. Then set this feature library by Files / New job or Files / Properties of current job and select the Feature library (see Create a New Trimble SC job above). Note: Those codes exported in Extra LSS codes contain numeric attributes e.g. SO, these are currently recognised by Trimble as integer vales and need amending in the Trimble Feature Definition Manager to 3 decimal places. The LSS supplied feature library contains the amendment.and can be used as the base when building a new library. Just export the new point and link features to a temporary library and cut and paste them to the base feature library. Page 25 of 35

6.5 Exporting to LandXML (Quick Guide) an FXL feature library Copy the LandXML file to the controller Trimble data folder and use Map/Options/Layers to pick relevant data sets to be used from within the LandXML data To set this up graphically with a Job In main General Survey click on Map click on the Up Arrow icon choose Layers click the + icon next to the LandXML file to view the DTM surface name, Lines and Points. Click twice on the LandXML file to set the box and the tick on all three items. This allows the data to be both viewed and selected To amend the graphical view select the Up Arrow/Options. Here settings like Display labels By Name will show the Point numbers etc Links the string numbers are accepted as supplied in the LandXML (Trimble does not actually need these because features with same name are treated as unique). If the strings return to a duplicate coordinate i.e. are looped, then Trimble Access automatically shows a shaded area (known as polygons). These areas are hatched by default within the Map/Layer/options. Points the observation numbers are properly recognised Triangles this is automatically imported and displays height banding based on DTM Alignments have to be Defined in Roads as name.rxl. Please note that if the road section templates are required then use the Export MX option instead because the Export LandXML only supports the alignment reference line itself. Export MX Create an SPF for each road alignment - this can be either a geometry SPF or a normal SPF. Export MX using the Survey option plus the SPF The LSS exports MX data using a '.GEN' suffix which will need to be changed to '.CRD' to be 'seen' by the Access importer Page 26 of 35

Export LandXML choose the relevant string as the Road name then click on Edit and then Store keeping the same name. This alignment is then seen on the Map/Options/Layers file list as an RXL Page 27 of 35

6.6 Export Job via Trimble Link The Export Job option has been superceded by the Export LandXML option and is now a legacy LSS option because; it only supports points (the Linework can be additionally supplied via DXF and the DTM via the TTM format). The Job does not contain a coord sys. When opening the job on the instrument there will be a warning. This generally just requires the scale factor SF set to 1.0 (LSS cannot currently support a calibration set which this would require) Based on the above it is possible to replace the Export Job option with Export CSV using Trimble Link. When using Trimble Link / Trimble Data Transfer General Survey refers to Access Survey refers to SC DXF has colours but although it has the string labels it does not have the user observation number If the link is complex and is exported as a block then it also imports the insertion point as a node which can be seen as an obs this may cause duplication issues when LandXML obs are imported The TTM also needs to be exported as the DTM - To set this up graphically with the Job click on Map click on the Up Arrow icon choose Layers select TTM Copy Job, DXF and TTM to the Trimble data folder Page 28 of 35

6.7 Export/Upload to Survey Instruments From the main menu, select Export/Upload data to survey instruments. The selected logger uses the parameters as per Input/Download & convert. Note: the logger parameters can be set by clicking the Change button or by using Configure/Hardware & System / logger. Leave the default option Trimble Link selected and click 'Next'. This dialog allows the selection of observation and station data. The defaults assume that the Observations will be exported using the Selection filter. Click Next. Note: The observations can have the code added to the point number, which can be related to the SPF chainage. A warning dialog is shown by Trimble Link that the resultant job file created by this option on the SC will not have a coordinate system. If chosen the Selection filter dialog will offer the opportunity of multiple observation selection criteria. As soon as there are observations selected then the 'Cancel' button is replaced by Finish. Click Finish once all required data is highlighted. Note: The data selected by the Selection filter is grouped in the export set first as complete strings and then as individual points related to their loaded order. To export the observations in the order they were located use Individual observations from the previous dialog. Page 29 of 35

There is the possibility of repeating several selection criteria / method to the same data set. If required click Add more data and then choose to add more observations/stations. When No more data is chosen see below for the data transfer. Choose the connected device to export to and click Open. Trimble Link displays the list of current jobs on the SC and offers the LSS survey name as the default for the job file name to be created. Click Save to accept this and transfer the data to the SC as a new job file. Note: the file format needs to be selected to match the SC firmware version. Page 30 of 35

Chapter 7 Stakeout The above procedure creates a Trimble SC job file on the device chosen. In order to set-out this file it first needs to be opened. Select Files / Open job from the SC desktop menu. From the list of job files Select the one to open. Click on the Map menu option on the right hand side of the SC desktop to display the data. The warning screen is displayed because no projection exists. Click OK. The data points are then shown to a default extents screen. Follow the procedure for creating a background image of the survey using Export/Autocad DXF (see documentation on this procedure) then select Files / Properties of current job to select the DXF as a Background file. Click on Map again to view the data with a background. Page 31 of 35

Chapter 8 Onboard Instrument DTM Before exporting a surface make sure that you have edited the data, the links especially, to create the correct set of triangles and breaklines. Note: For models that have multiple surface height / depth values use the Output Surface Boundaries option to prepare a model that otherwise would have vertical sides between surfaces of varying depths (where the resultant DTM of duplicate coordinates with different levels will not be representative of the original LSS model). Please see the Tutorial for Output Surface Boundaries option for a run through of how to create a correct formation model. Select Export/Onboard instrument DTM/Trimble TIN model (TTM). Select Create File and enter a filename and a Model name for the TTM. If base /top of surfaces is required then make sure that you have prepared the model correctly using the LSS option Output Surface Boundaries as described above and tick the box Adjust levels for surface height / depth option Click OK and the TTM file will be created. Page 32 of 35

Chapter 9 TTM files on Survey Controller To use this DTM file on the SC select Survey / Stakeout after opening the required job and carrying out a set-up procedure. This will offer a replacement menu that the contains the DTM option. Select this. A few questions/dialogs are necessary When surveying points within the area of the DTM the Trimble SC will now report the cut/fill difference to the DTM model. Page 33 of 35

Chapter 10 Photos/Images & Trimble Access When an image is recorded, Trimble Access will prompt the user as to what to attach the image to. The options are: Job Previous point Next point Point Name Regardless of when you record an image on the controller, Trimble Access will dynamically sort the data in the job file. Photos recorded as an Attribute will also be output in the 8, record. (This is only relevant to users who have created a Photo attribute in their code library using TBCs Feature Definition Manager). There is currently no facility in LSS Export Code list to allow for a photo attribute. The Job file and its attached photos/images can be transferred to the LSS survey folder, using either: Windows Explorer (via Active Sync/Mobile Device) or a memory device. The images are found in the Trimble Data folder and the relevant ones can be found by date reference. Via the Trimble Link Trimble DC for EDM option which will also transfer a DC file but which itself will not be used. Once the Job file and image files are in the LSS folder then move the Job to a sub-folder Jobs and the images to a sub-folder Images. Following this use the option Trimble Job (EDM and GPS) via Active Sync with the No data transfer/download option ticked then browse the Job file and process. Page 34 of 35
