Softrock Manuals Overview Softrock has produced a range of manuals to assist the user of its systems and software to gain the most from these products. Each manual has a unique numbering system, which allows for easy crossreferencing: Module Number Module 1 Module 2 Module 3 Module 4 Module 5 Module 6 Module 7 Module 8 Module 9 Module 10 Module 11 Module 12 Module 13 Content QuikSlope Manual AutoSlope Manual Quikcom Manual Softrock Automated site At A Glance AutoSlope Installation Manual Leica Onboard Slope Monitoring Manual FieldSat Manual AutoSat Manual ATS Pocket PC Manual Analyzer Manual QuikSlope5 Manual GeoMos Training Manual AutoWeather Manual A quick example of cross-referencing Module 2 AutoSlope Manual Index number Instrument Settings Refers to Module 2; Chapter 15; Section 3, Subsection 1. This cross-referencing scheme can be easily be used across any Softrock manual. For example in Module 1 QuikSlope Manual, Database creation. We regularly make use of cross-referencing to other manuals within our software collection. This avoids repetition, makes for easy updating, and provides an efficient method to record information. It is therefore important that the user understands this unique numbering system, as all the information for our programs cannot fit into a single manual. Page 2 of 41

6.1.1 Introduction This manual describes how to use the Leica onboard monitoring software so that the information gathered can be downloaded into QuikSlope for processing and analysis. The onboard program is used for repeated automatic measurements. It measures angles and distances to predefined points. The measurements can be: Repeated as often as necessary At any time Performed on both faces (a) (b) Diagram 1 a to b Elements of Measurement Page 5 of 41

6.2.1Monitoring Steps Overview Leica 1000 Series 1. Level the instrument 2. Enter Temperature & Pressure 3. SETUP the instrument Page 6 of 41

4. QSET the instrument 5. Start monitoring program Page 7 of 41

6.3.1 Instrument Setup The following adjustments need to be completed before any work with the instrument can be commenced. 1. Place the instrument onto the tripod or survey pillar this is best done by removing the tribrach from the instrument and screwing it onto the tripod or pillar. Using the foot screw (3) level the bulls eye bubble. 2 Place the instrument into the tribrach and secure using the black lever to lock the instrument into place. After this is done, insert the power cable and power up the instrument, the instrument should open up in the main menu. 3 The instrument can now be levelled using the electronic level, to do this hit the button below F3 the button that has the little spirit level symbol. This will display an electronic bulls-eye bubble on the screen of the instrument. (point to not here is that the instrument must be in face 1 position this is easily checked simply ensure that the bulls-eye bubble on the instrument is closest to you) also ensure that the face plate containing the display is parallel to two of the foot screws. This done you can now use the foot screws to level the instrument. If you have levelled the bulls-eye on the tribrach correctly the instrument should be reasonably level. Page 8 of 41

To level the instrument using the foot screws you must follow these steps. Using the two foot screws that are parallel to the face plate using only your thumb and index fingers you can begin to level the instrument. By turning thumbs together or thumbs apart you will see the bubble on the screen move when you have moved it in the desired direction and happy with the alignment in that plane you can then use the remaining foot screw to adjust the instrument in the other plane. If you are happy that the bubble sits well over the cross hairs hit the CONT button. YOUR INSTRUMENT SHOULD NOW BE LEVEL. Page 9 of 41

6.3.2 Instrument Settings in Detail The following steps are required to set up the instrument ready for use. This requires the input of known coordinates for the instrument station and the REF station (Backsight). A bearing and distance between the two points should also be calculated as this will allow for checking in the field. Also ensure that all unnecessary file are deleted from the Memory Card. You will need to record the temperature and pressure for the ppm correction. To do this, follow these instructions: From the Main Menu go into the measure mode screen. Hit F6 Meas From the Measure screen go into the target data screen. Hit F4 Target From the Target data screen go into the PPM screen. Hit F2 PPM Page 10 of 41

In the PPM CORRECTIONS screen the data for calculating PPM can be entered. ATM Pressure: Temperature: PPM Total: X.X hpa (Enter recorded Pressure) X o C (Enter Recorded Temp) XXX ppm (PPM will be displayed) Hit ESC To get back to Main Menu Now you should be OK to measure. Note: You need to check this prior to all new set ups and make the necessary changes Instrument Orientation First ensure the instrument is in the Face 1 position this can be checked by looking at the position of the bulls-eye bubble between the standards of the instrument. If it is not facing you then it is in the wrong position another way to check is the position of the vertical tangent screw this should be on the left hand side of the instrument as you look through the telescope. Or look at the Telescope face display field on the Measure mode screen. Page 11 of 41

SS am (This is where you set the BEGIN time to begin observations typically you would set this before the actual time when doing continuous observations.) DD: MM: YY (This is where you enter the END Date for you observations typically you would set this to several days after the current date or even weeks for continuous obs.) HH.MM.SS am (This is where you set the END time to END obs typically you would set to time consistent with the start time on the date you want the obs to end.) XXh XXm This is where you set the DELAY time between observation in continuous operation. That is you can set it typically to 5 min So that when the instrument has finished the round it will start measuring the prisms again. You can make this what ever interval you desire. Edit these fields to suit you requirements, typically for an immediate start you would make the start date before the actual date. Similarly with the time you would make it before the actual time. With the End Date you can set this as required but for continuous operation you would set this several days or even weeks ahead, again similarly with the time. The delay is the amount of time you want the instrument to wait before continuing on to measure the round or group of targets. This delay can be what ever you like typically for continuous monitoring it is set to about five minutes or an hour depending on the requirements for data and the risk. Hit CONT Hit 3 Point Measure The instrument will now begin the monitoring process. Wait for it to measure the REF and the first prism in the group, if this works OK you are now working. If you have nominated a specific start finish time and date then you will need to return to the instrument to pick up the memory card for processing. Page 20 of 41

6.6.1Downloading and Data Management Remove the PCMCIA card from the instrument. Insert the card into you PCIMCA Card slot on your computer / laptop.
