2 1 Introduction Understanding Mathematics Internet Resources The objective of this series of 9 CD ROMs is to provide a resource for teaching the core content of Numeracy programmes and Key Stage 3/4. These new versions are now distributable over LAN s, Intranets or the Internet. The products provide a highly structured approach to learning where the user is guided step-by-step through each concept in a topic. At every stage the student has to interact with the computer in completing questions and examples and they are unable to proceed until satisfactory answers have been provided. This approach ensures that students understand one topic before proceeding to the next, and worksheets are provided as a framework for assessment. The separate sections of each module have been compartmentalised to aid integration into MLE's. Each section, or micro-module, is self contained and capable of being used as a stand-alone resource. Worksheets, in PDF and DOC form, can be integrated into the resource, or can be used as MLE resources in their own right. These resources can be easily set up as items of courseware and assigned to students as they progress through the module. Your MLE manager will understand how this can be done by reading the following:

9 The following information will be useful in putting the Understanding Mathematics series onto your MLE. You may wish to pass this information on to your MLE technical manager. Basics of an Understanding Mathematics chapter Each chapter contains the files for a Macromedia Authorware piece and an HTML wrapper. Chapters are given meaningful names that match the chapter title. This is to aid location of the chapter prior to its insertion into the MLE. Files inside the chapter follow a simple naming convention. Each chapter has a common phrase which will appear in all filenames e.g. 4Alg, 3Geom etc. The common phrase consists of the chapter number and a short descriptive phrase to indicate the product. For MLE managers the only important file is the l_<common PHRASE>_1.htm file e.g. l_4alg_1.htm. This file contains the embedded Authorware piece. You should link to this page, or use this page as a template for your own HTML wrapper. When setting up a MLE resource the files must be treated as a block and copied or moved together. PDF's for the chapter can be found in the main PDF folder. Select the ones that correspond to the chapter number, as defined above. Similarly DOC files can be found in the main worksheet folder. The Macromedia Authorware plug-in Modules are made with Macromedia Authorware, a widely used development tool. To be able to view an Authorware piece a plug-in is required. This plug-in can be obtained from a number of sources. The CD ROM has two versions of the plug-in. In the Plugins folder there is both an executable that can be run to install the plugin, and an ActiveX version that gets auto installed when the accompanying HTML page is viewed by ActiveX compatible browsers such as Internet Explorer. Alternatively the plugins are available direct from the Macromedia web site at Please contact us for further information.
