1 Title: Baby 3-D Mobiles Author: Theresa D. State: Texas Grade Span: 6-8 Subject: Mathematics Assignment Type: Individual, Small group Recommended Time Frame: 2 weeks (2 weekends) if outside of class time; 3 Blocked (90 min) periods or 5 unblocked (45/55 min) periods Summary of Project: Students will create a hanging mobile of six common three dimensional figures they have created from the two dimensional nets. Prior to folding the nets students will measure the shapes and record the measurements in the journal in order to be able to calculate the volume and surface area of each. Materials and Resources Needed: Whole class Per Group Per Student Notebook paper Journal cover Data sheet Ruler Colored pencils or markers Scissors Tape Ribbon or string Something to hang shapes from (wire hanger, paper plate with holes punched along the perimeter, etc.) Glue Key Vocabulary Edge Net Surface area formula Base Polyhedron Face Slant height Vertex Volume formula Implementing the Activity Begin with PowerPoint story of the birth of Baby 3D at 3-D Memorial Hospital and how the shape received its name based on its base shape and head type (flat and pointy). Students follow along with PowerPoint in their foldable notes booklet. Project is introduced and materials distributed. Students create the journal portion of the project as a whole group guided by the teacher as described in the directions. Teacher models in small groups or whole group (as students watch and take a few guiding notes in journal but don t make shape) how to complete first shape from beginning to end including measurements, labeling, coloring, cutting, folding, gluing, hanging to mobile and final calculations.

2 Students will then complete their six shapes and journal on their own or in small groups no larger than 3. If students work in groups of 2 or 3 divide shapes evenly among them (will save time) but each student completes a full journal including information on all six shapes. End Result Students will be able to calculate volume and surface area using measurements they have personally acquired and will have created a hanging mobile displaying a cube, cylinder, triangular pyramid, rectangular pyramid, triangular prism, and rectangular prism. Students will be able to identify the 3-D figure by name from the 2-D net. Students will also be able to reflect and express what they have learned from the project in written format. For Differentiated Instruction Allow students with writing differences to type their journal. Increase group size to two, three or six and allow students to complete only three, two or one shape each and make 1 mobile between the group members For advanced students, allow them to complete the entire project on their own outside of class time.

5 Baby 3D Mobile Project Name: Period: Objective: To create three-dimensional models from two-dimensional nets and to apply the skills and procedures of Volume & Surface Area (total & lateral) using measurement and calculations TEKS: 8.7A, 8.8A, 8.8B, 8.14D, 8.15A Materials: Six sheets of notebook paper scissors liquid glue ruler clear tape colored pencils calculator pencil Data Sheet Procedures Setting up your Lab Journal 1. Staple the following list of items in a booklet to form a journal for recording your information throughout the project. Be sure to align the holes of your paper for easy safe keeping in your binder. Use TWO staples as shown below a. Journal Cover Page b. Notebook Paper c. Data Sheet 2. Title each sheet of notebook paper using the name of each 3-D figure. Use these pages to neatly record your measurements in an organized table Procedures Creating the Figures Measure and record the length, width, and/or height for each polygon within each net Calculate and record the area of each polygon within each net Label a vertex, edge, face, and the base on each net (You may need to cut and build shape prior to determining each part of the figure) Color each figure neatly (solid colors are best) Cut out each figure. DO NOT cut off the assembly tabs Fold the net along the edges. Use strong, firm creases and the shape will magically build itself. Repeat for each figure Attach the mobile string or ribbon to the inside of a vertex. For pyramids this should be the upper most vertex. Repeat on each figure Apply a thin amount of liquid glue to the assembly tabs and place under the corresponding face/base Set shape aside to dry 10. Fill in your Data Sheet 11.
