1 Module 12 Lesson 1: Graphing on the coordinate plane Lesson 2: Independent and dependent variables in tables and graphs Lesson 3: Writing equations from tables Lesson 4: Representing Algebraic relationships in tables and graphs Module 12 Lesson 1: Graphing on the coordinate plane Objective: find and position pairs of integers and other rational numbers on a coordinate plane Coordinate Plane formed by two number lines that intersect at right angles. The point of intersection is 0 on each number line Axes: the two number lines x axis: the horizontal axis y axis: the vertical axis origin: the point where the axes intersect quadrants: the two axis are divided into 4 quadrants Ordered Pair is a pair of numbers that gives the location of a point on a coordinate plane. The first number tells how far to the right (positive) or left (negative) the point is located from the origin. The second number tells how far up (positive) or down (negative) the point is located from the origin Coordinates: the numbers in an ordered pair x coordinate: the first number y coordinate the second number Feb 16 9:10 AM 1

2 Identify the coordinates of each point. Name the quadrant where each point is located. Complete numbers 4 and 5 on page 332 1/6 Feb 16 9:15 AM Graph and label each point on the coordinate plane. P(0, 2), Q( 4, 1.5), R(3.5, 0) Complete numbers 6 10 on page 333 2/6 Feb 16 9:16 AM Reading Scales on Axes The scale of an axis is the number of units that each grid line represents. The graph shows the location of a fountain, a slide, and a sandbox in a park. The scale on each axis represents yards. Give the coordinates for the sandbox and use them to describe the location of the sandbox relative to the fountain. Lets take a look at example 3 on page 333 3/6 Feb 16 9:17 AM 2

3 Complete numbers 1 8 on page 334 Use the coordinate plane shown. Each unit represents 1 city block. Write the ordered pairs that represent Henry and the library. 4/6 Feb 16 9:24 AM 2. Describe Henry's location relative to the library. Determine whether each relationship is a function. Henry wants to meet his friend Emma at an ice cream shop before they go to the library. The ice cream shop is 7 blocks west of the library. Plot and label a point representing the ice cream shop. What are the coordinates of the point? Emma describes her current location: "I'm directly west of the library, halfway to the ice cream shop." Plot and label a point representing Emma's location. What are the coordinates of the point? 5/6 6/6 Additional Example 1 Identify the coordinates of each point. Name the quadrant where each point is located. Additional Example 2 Graph and label each point on the coordinate plane. P(0, 2), Q( 4, 1.5), R(3.5, 0) Point A: (3, 2), Quadrant IV; Point B: ( 4, 1), Quadrant II 1/6 2/6 3

4 Additional Example 3 The graph shows the location of a fountain, a slide, and a sandbox in a park. The scale on each axis represents yards. Give the coordinates for the sandbox and use them to describe the location of the sandbox relative to the fountain. The sandbox is at (10, 15). This is 10 yards east and 15 yards south of the fountain. Use the coordinate plane shown. Each unit represents 1 city block. 1. Write the ordered pairs that represent Henry and the library. Henry ( 3, 4), Library (2, 3) 3/6 4/6 2. Describe Henry's location relative to the library. Henry is 5 blocks west and 7 blocks north of the library. Determine whether each relationship is a function. 3. Henry wants to meet his friend Emma at an ice cream shop before they go to the library. The ice cream shop is 7 blocks west of the library. Plot and label a point representing the ice cream shop. What are the coordinates of the point? ( 5, 3) 4. Emma describes her current location: "I'm directly west of the library, halfway to the ice cream shop." Plot and label a point representing Emma's location. What are the coordinates of the point? ( 1.5, 3) 5/6 6/6 4
