1 Popeye Morph Inbetweening & Clean-up in TV Paint Part I: Setting up in TV Paint Through Exporting Breakdown Movies Things you will Learn Import Images as Project Light Table/Onion Skin Tool Off the Pegs Preview Setting up a TV Paint Project Clean-up and Inbetween Export Movie A. Import Key Frames as New Project 1. Open TV Paint. 2. Go to File;Open/Import and browse to the KEYS_POPEYE_WHIMPY folder in the CLASS RESOURCES folder and select the first jpg and click Load. 3. In the Import Footage window select the Project tab and make sure the boxes below are unchecked. In the image panel to the right you can scroll to see all the images you are loading. Click on Import. B. Set up Layers in the Timeline 1. Notice that you now have three images loaded into a Layer in the Timeline. Click on New at the top of the layers panel and select Anim Layer. This is the layer you will be working in.

2 2. Drag the handle at the lower right of the image in your new Anim_0 layer until it matches the length of your original layer. Like so Adjust the opacity of the original layer (Morph_01) by moving the slider in the Layer panel to the left. About 30%.. C. Redraw Keys in Red 1. Move your cursor to the right of the TV Paint window and a drawer should appear. Choose the 2B pencil from the top layer. Change the color to red in the color wheel. 2. Make sure your top Anim_0 layer is selected and begin redrawing Whimpy in the first frame. 3. To redraw Popeye you ll need to move your cursor to the third frame in the Anim_0 layer. Notice that the Whimpy drawing remains on the left.

3 4. This is because all three frames are currently occupied by the same drawing. With your cursor, still on the third frame go to the Main Panel at the top-left and click on the Skull and Cross-bones icon. This will delete everything in the current frame while making a new drawing 5. Now you can begin redrawing Popeye. 6. Now move your cursor to the center frame. Notice Whimpy is still occupying that frame) and click on the Skull and Cross-bones icon to create a new clean drawing. D. Turn on Onionskinning 1. In the Layer stack to the left click on the radial button directly below the light bulb icon in the Anim_0 layer. This will turn on onion skinning for this layer only. With your cursor at the second instance (middle Image) notice that you can see all three of your drawings slightly ghosted. You are now almost ready to start inbetweening.

4 1. Onionskinning with the Light Table At the top left of the TV Paint window click on the lightbulb icon to activate the Lightbox Panel. This panel controls both onionskinning and a tool we will call Off the Pegs. At its default setting the Lightbox has one drawing on either side of the selected frame revealed at about 50% opacity. This is what you saw when you clicked on the radial button in the layer stack.. Click on the numbers highlighted in green and notice the ghosted image for that frame disappears. Also moving the sliders for each frame changes the opacity. For now the default setting is good. 2. Off the Pegs Inbetweening/Breakdown Guide Besides onionskinning the Lightbox is also a valuable tool for inbetweening by allowing the animator to move drawings off register (or Off the Pegs) to allowing trace-offs of objects and characters regardless of placement on the frame. Let s try Make sure the animation layer is selected and place the cursor at the second image. You should still see all three images ghosted in the Drawing panel. Use Alt-Right to zoom out so you can see the edges of your drawings. 2. In the Lightbox panel make sure you are still at the default settings. At the bottom center of the panel click on the dot just to the left of the X. The dot will turn into a highlighted O and the bottom of the panel will expand.

5 3. Notice a bounding box around of the drawing panel. Click on the image and drag Whimpy to the center of the blue circle (this is where we will draw an inbetween of Whimpy/Popeye). Next grab the handle at the right/center of the bounding box and rotate counter-clockwise so Whimpy looks comfortable in his new position. Aabout in the Angle entry at the bottom of the Lightbox panel. 4. Next click on the dot after the X in the Lightbox panel and move Popeye over the Whimpy image. You ll want to rotate Popeye clockwise to align him with Whimpy. Adjust back and forth between Pan and Rotate to get the best alignment. Once aligned let s scale Popeye up to match Whimpy s larger head by dragging from the corner handle. About in the Scale entry. 3. Drawing Inbetweens (or Breakdowns ) At first this double image can be a bit disorienting but with a little practice you should be able to redraw a Whimpy/Popeye inbetween. 1. Get your 2B Pencil from the drawer and change it to Blue in the color wheel.

6 2. Start with the most recognizable parts like the nose and begin drawing between the two noses in the ghosted images.. 3. Remember you can change the opacity of your ghosted images and toggle them on and off to help get a clearer view of the objects your drawing. Or you can toggle the onionskin effect for the entire layer with the button in the Layer stack. 4. Insert Drawing and Repeat Once you are satisfied with your Whimpy/Popeye inbetween (technically the drawing that establishes the arc is the breakdown drawing) you will need to create an inbetween on either side of this drawing to further smooth the transition. 4. Since we are done with the original image layer we can turn off its visibility by clicking on the radial button directly below the eye icon in the frame stack panel. Just to the left of the Onionskin button. 5. Next let s turn the Breakdown Inbetween drawing red to make our lines more readable. First make sure the Anim_0 layer is selected and your cursor is on the new Breakdown drawing. Go to the drawer at the right of the screen (where you got the 2B pencil) and drop down to the Sketch Panel and choose the Red Color Fill Icon.

7 . This will immediately turn your blue drawing red. Bam! 6. Insert a new frame by dragging the lower right handle on the first drawing (Whimpy) one frame to the right. With your Onionskin on and your Light Table in default mode you should see only a ghosted image of Whimpy and the new Whimpy/Popeye breakdown drawing. 7. Now repeat sections D. Off the Pegs and E. Drawing Inbetweens to complete the second Inbetween. You will find this one a bit easier as the drawings themselves are a one step more similar. 8. Repeat Steps D. Off the Pegs, E. Drawing Inbetweens and F. Insert Drawing and Repeat for an inbetween before the original Popeye drawing. When you are finished you can set the Light Table up like so to view all 5 of your images.

8 The results should look something like this. 5. Playback Pendulum Loop at 6 FPS First, we need to set up the Playback to ping-pong our animation. We will be using 6 FPS (the equivalent of animating in 24 FPS) because we still have one more layer of inbetweens to go. 2. Make sure the Playback bar is set to Loop at 6 fps. 3. Next, set the Layer to Ping-Pong mode. To do this click on the icon after the last frame in the Anim_0 layer and change the setting from Hold to Ping-Pong.

9 4. Set the playback range to extend beyond the drawings you have in the Timeline. In this case we have 5 drawings (From Popeye to Whimpy) but will need 3 more to complete the pendulum cycle. You can do this by typing 7 into the Mark Out setting at the far-right end of the Playback Bar. 4. Finally click on the Play button to see your pendulum animate. 6. Export a Breakdown Movie Go to File/Export and select the Project Display tab if not already selected. Make sure MOV (FF mpeg) and Animation are selected (in that order). Click on the gear icon and change from Lossless to Compression. Now change the Frame Rate from 24 to 6 fps. Check Background and deselect all other boxes except Pixel Aspect Ratio. Before Exporting our movie let s make sure we like what we re seeing in the Export Preview window. The 0-7 frame range will reflect your playback settings from the previous step. You should be able to drag the cursor at the bottom of the window and see a full cycle of your pendulum.

10 If everything is satisfactory, browse to POPEYE project folder. Click on New Folder to create a MOVIES folder and type the name of your movie and click Save. Click on the Export button to create your movie. Finally open your Movie in Quicktime 7 to preview. Hit Command L to make the movie loop. Save your movie to the class Dropbox folder as simpsonb_popeyemorph_breakdowns.mov
