1 Welcome to Week 2! Good luck, have fun. Lab Assignment 1 Introduction to Programming ICS 31 & CSE 41 Summer Session Preparation 1. Make sure you have obtained the book Introduction to Computing Using Python by Ljubomir Perkovic. Read Chapter 1 and Section If you would like to use your own computer, make sure you have Python 3. Find the IDLE application, run it and make sure you know how to open, edit and save a new shell and file. Test this by creating a new file. Write the following code: print("hello world") Save the file with your UCInet ID as the title. Notice the file extension is.py. This means it is a python file. As an example, my file would be called araturi.py. This was just for practice. You do not need to submit this file. 3. We will be doing Pair Programming in this course. These are going to be the rules of Pair Programming that we will use: a) The first rule of pair programming is that you will talk about programming. b) The second rule of pair programming is that you will talk about pair programming. c) If someone says stop, or burns out, you switch roles. Switch frequently during a coding session: we suggest 15 minute intervals. Roles are flexible, do what is needed and what works for your partnership. d) Only two programmers to a computer. One is the driver, who controls the computer. The other is navigator, who reviews, asks questions, proposes solutions, debugs and strategizes. Both partners own everything. e) One task at a time. Make sure you work through each item in the assignment. 1

2 f) Use your shell, use your documentation. Make sure you have the resources you need: paper, pencil, textbook and energy. g) You will work on the assignments together for as long as you need to until it is due. You can work outside of the lab session. h) If there is an assignment, you have to write code. If you want more information on pair programming and why we are doing it, here is a nice paper about it: Let us know if you have trouble accessing it. Lab Work Choose a lab partner and check in with the TA so they can record your pairing. You should have a new partner each week. Only ONE of you will hand in the assignment each week. Make sure both of you keep a copy of the assignment, just in case. All the files you submit must have the UCInetID of both partners in the filename, followed by the assignment number. For example: araturi-bsmith-1a.py The first line of each submitted file should also contain a comment with both partners full name, ID number, and Assignment number (you will be given this after each activity that needs to be submitted). The first line of my first lab assignment would read: #Ankita Raturi and Bob Smith Assignment 1a In these assignments we will assuming you are using IDLE. As a routine, you will start up IDLE and create a new file. Make sure you can see both the shell and your editor window. You will sometimes be asked to submit the shell as a.py file, or your actual code from the editor as a.py file, or simple text answers as a.txt file. Make sure you pay attention to the deliverable at the end of each assignment. Assignment 1a: Getting Started [5 points] Goal: Great the user by name. Create a new python file and write code that does the following: 1. Prompt the user with Hello! Who are you? 2. The user should be able to input their name. 2

3 3. The program should respond with Hello [name]. Your output should look something like this (don t worry about formatting issues, just get the words on the screen!): Hello! Who are you? Ankita Hello Ankita! Welcome to Python. Deliverable: Save the code in the editor, and submit 1a.py as your first lab assignment through Checkmate. (As a brief reminder, your filename would be something like araturibsmith-1a.py) Assignment 1b: Logic [10 points] Goal: Evaluate logical expressions. In a new file, write a python expression that corresponds to each of these statements, and prints out the result: 1. Calculate the sum of the all the odd numbers between 2 and What is the average of the previous set of numbers? 3. Add the remainder of 46 divided by 5 to the quotient of 1337 divided by to the 30th power. Deliverable: Submit 1b.py. You should have at least 5 lines of code. Assignment 1c: ASCII Art [15 points] Goal: Practice string manipulation. ASCII is a character set that defines the letters, digits and symbols we see on the screen in terms of 1s and 0s. It essentially tells the computer how to draw different characters that we commonly use. You may have come across ASCII art in very simple forms, like the popular smiley face :). ASCII art involves creating drawings by using the character set available. In this assignment, you will create some ASCII art by using the different string manipulation methods. First, an example. We assign variable star with the value *, for readability. The print method then outputs 10 stars in a row creating a line.: 3

4 star = "*" print(star*10) With the output: ********** Now, a box. We will also need a variable to hold spaces: Output: Box: **** * * * * **** space = " " print(star*4) print(star + space*2 + star) print(star + space*2 + star) print(star*4) In a new file, write string expressions to create the following ASCII art. Your code should print out the name of each artwork, e.g. Cat followed by the art itself, as was done in the example. 1. Triangle. Hint: Base is 9 stars. * *** ***** ******* ********* 2. Dracula. Hint: You need some new symbols. Keeping track of the total number of characters on each line helps keep track of alignment. ######## o o ** v--v 3. Cat. Hints: These are all the variables you will need to draw this cat. Feel free to use your 4

5 artistic license to improve the drawing. ear = "/\\" eye = "<o>" whisker = "==" body = "0" tail = "8" leg = " " star = "*" mouth = "^" hline = "_" claw = "o" Note, the ear is actually /\but in Python, the backslash is used to escape other characters that have special meanings. To fix this, we assign the ear variable the value /\\. We will see this used more later in the course. /\ /\ <o> <o> == * == == ^ == *_ ooo ooo Deliverable: Submit the code written for 1c.py. We should be able to run your file to produce output that has the name of the artwork followed by the ASCII art. Assignment 1d [10 points]: Goal: List comprehension. Write python statements corresponding to the following: a) Assign to a variable flowers a list containing strings: rose, bougainvillea, yucca, marigold, sunflower, lily of the valley. 5

6 b) Write a boolean expression that evaluates to True if string potato is in list flowers, and evaluate the expression. c) Assign to a list thorny the sublist of the first 3 objects in the list flowers. d) Assign to a list poisonous the sublist of just the last object in the list flowers. e) Assign to a list dangerous the concatenation of the lists thorny and poisonous. Deliverable: Submit 1d.py that contains the above statements. That s all for this week, have a good weekend! 6
