3 Introduction In the U.S., lease and well names may be reported by operators in many different ways. Over the years, there have been many inconsistencies in how wells were named in the IHS data. In 2005, IHS began to standardize how lease and well names are added in order to have a more consistent, searchable database. Objective The objective of this paper is to make data users aware of the standards currently used by IHS in entering well and lease names into the IHS database. This will allow users to more easily search and sort wells based on name. Well Data - Well and Lease Name Standards The WELL_NAME and LEASE_NAME fields in Well data are populated identically with the exception of the Offshore Gulf of Mexico region. Well Name A well name will be entered <Last Name> <First Name> < Middle Initial> <Title> Example: BROWN JIM M JR Apostrophe in Well Names Apostrophes will not be used in the well name to show ownership Example: Brown s Circle would be BROWNS CIRCLE Unit Unit will be entered after a proper name Example: BROWN JIM UNIT Proper Names with Initials and Unit Letters Leases with both proper initials (First and/or Middle) and Unit Letters will be entered <Last Name> <First Name> <Middle Initial> (back tic `) <Letter> (back tic) <Unit> Example: BROWN JIM M `D` UNIT Note: We avoid the use of apostrophes due to the issues they create when data is populated in a CSV (comma separated values) file. 4 Two Proper Names Two proper names will be entered <First Last Name> <First First Name (comma) Second Last Name> <Second First Name> Example: BROWN JIM, BLUE JOHN Long Well Names Wells with long names will be shortened to make the most sense of the whole name with conventional abbreviations used if necessary Example: DUVAL COUNTY RANCH COMPANY WEST will be shortened to DCRC WEST State Tract A State Tract well name will be entered <ST TR> <Number> (number sign is not used) Example: ST TR 5678 State Lease A State Lease well name will be entered <S L> five digit number (number sign is not used) Example: S L Louisiana Names & Nomenclature Louisiana wells with both a name and nomenclature will be entered <Name> ; (semi-colon) <Nomenclature> Example: BRUNER FARMS; L NOD RD SUA Gulf of Mexico Well Names Remove all dashes, slashes, unnecessary spaces and parentheses from Well Name Examples: OCS nnnnn STnnBPnn OCS Gnnnnn STnnBPnn OCS nnnnn SL nnnnn STnnBPnn OCS Gnnnnn SL nnnnn STnnBPnn SL nnnnn OCS nnnnn STnnBPnn SL nnnnn OCS Gnnnnn STnnBPnn For the wells with the surface in federal waters and the bottomhole in state waters, the format will be OCS nnnnn SL nnnnn STnnBPnn or OCS Gnnnnn SL nnnnn STnnBPnn For the wells that surface in state waters and bottomhole in federal waters the format will be SL nnnnn OCS nnnnn STnnBPnn or SL nnnnn OCS Gnnnnn STnnBPnn Example: OCS ST03BP01 OCS G03382 ST01BO01 IHS Inc. 7 If the Well Number is part of the Well Name, remove it and ensure that the Well Number is correctly populated in the Well Number data attribute field. Summary & Conclusions The following are the major points in this paper that need to be re-emphasized: 1. Prior to 2005, Well Names and Lease Names were not standardized. 2. After January 2005, IHS began to enter Well Names and Lease Names using the standards reported above. Recommendations and Adjustments Changes to historical Well Names and Lease Names are being made as reported/requested by customers.
