23 Enerdeq Browser v2.6 Training Reference Creating a Data Query Data Attributes The left side of a Query page displays an expandable list of Data Attributes. Data Attributes are used to locate and select search criteria to query. The attributes that are displayed will vary depending on the Data Type that was selected. Each of the main attribute branches can be expanded. An expanded branch provides an associated list of specific attributes. Either click the symbol next to a main branch or click on the main attribute name in order to expand the branch. To expand all branches at the same time, click the option at the top of the list. A qualifier field provides a dropdown menu that contains options that can be applied to a criteria search. Qualifier fields are especially handy when entering a partial text search. In the example below, under the Location Field attribute, we entered a partial field name (Niobr). A pop up window appeared, indicating that there were no records found and recommended that we change the qualifier option in the 2 nd field from Starts With to Contains. Excluding Search Criteria from a Query Nearly every attribute search field displays an Exclude option preceded by a checkbox. This option will let you exclude specific search criteria from your data query. Note: When querying Well Data, results from the query will include both API and IC Numbers (Internal Control number). Historically, an Internal Control (IC) number was assigned to a new well by IHS if an API number had not yet been assigned by a regulatory agency. This was done so that the new well could be included into the IHS database. To exclude IC Numbers from the results of a Well Data query, check the box next to: Exclude IC number from query in the search pane. 22 February, 2015

128 Appendix A Enerdeq Browser v2.6 Training Reference Appendix A API Numbering Guidelines The American Petroleum Institute (API) Subcommittee on Well Data Retrieval Systems was formed in 1962 to develop a standard method for nationwide well identification for use in computerized well data systems. They created the API well number, a unique, permanent, numeric identifier assigned for identification of a well (i.e. hole in the ground) which is drilled for the purpose of finding or producing oil and/or gas or providing related services. The subcommittee's recommendations were first published in 1966 as Appendix A, API Bulletin D12, Well Data Glossary. In 1968 it became the API Bulletin D12A, The API Well Number and Standard State and County Codes. Several revisions have been made, the latest being published in In 1995, the subcommittee drafted a new API numbering scheme that allowed for better identification of wells with sidetracks and recompletions. However, the Subcommittee on Well Data Retrieval was disbanded before these recommendations were officially published. In the draft, the subcommittee proposed adding an Event Sequence Code (digits 13 and 14) which would apply to re-entries, recompletions, and hole deepenings. (These codes may vary between vendors and other industry groups according to well records obtained.) THIS would make it easy to identify a true hole change for each borehole in a well. The geoscientist could then more easily reconstruct the borehole geometry and sequence events that happened during recompletions, workovers, or sidetracking. Digits 13 and 14 of the API number have long been part of the IHS Energy Active well and WHCS well completion database from the former Petroleum Information Corp. However, these digits were incremented differently than what the subcommittee proposed before its disbandonment. Recognizing that this new numbering scheme for digits 13 and 14 would offer greater benefits to our customers, the IHS Energy is adopting this new structure. In January 1999, this new numbering scheme was implemented in the WHCS well completion and the Active well database. All the API numbers have now been updated and replaced to reflect the new system. Only digits 13 and 14 will be affected. (NOTE: the Active and WHCS databases are from the former Petroleum Information Corp. Only products derived from these databases will be affected, such as the discontinued Magellan, petrorom Active, and petrorom Well Data. API numbers in the former Dwight's Energydata well database and corresponding products will not be affected). In the Production Data database from the former Petroleum Information Corp., API's in regions that contain the full 14-digit API numbers may also have changes. These changes are implemented a state by state basis, as monthly production updates are released. (NOTE: Once again, these changes only affect products from the former Petroleum Information Corp production database, such as the discontinued Magellan and petrorom Production Data. No Dwights production products will be affected.) If you are maintaining or updating a well database from a product using former PI well data, the following information could be of importance to you: 122 February, 2015

129 Enerdeq Browser v2.6 Training Reference Appendix A Well data obtained from products using the Active and WHCS well databases in January 1999 and thereafter will contain the new API numbering structure. Well data obtained from products using data from December 1998 and prior will have the previous API numbering structure. For example, petrorom's Well Data 4th quarter 1998 release will have the old numbering structure. petrorom's Active Well Data's January issue will have the new structure. Any data accessed from on-line systems today (i.e. PetroNet21SM Select: U.S.: Well and Production Data, formerly the Oil & Gas Data Channel) will have the new numbering system implemented for all wells. In our Active Well database 2,058 wells will have API number changes to digits 13 and 14. In our WHCS well completion database, 34,889 wells will have changes. A cross-reference file of the replaced API numbers is available to our customers. You may need to update your database with these API number changes or duplication of wells. This file can be downloaded from the IHS Enerdeq Browser application. Go to the Data Resources section on the right side of the home page and click the API Change Control File link. If you are maintaining or updating a production database that utilizes the API number and is from the former PI production data, the following information may be of importance to you: Some regions in the production database from the former PI will have API changes. Most regions will not be affected, as they did not contain the full 14-digit API number. Here are the statistics for each state: The New API Numbering Structure: Example: State Code: The first two digits of the API number represent the surface location of the state the well is located in. In This example, the surface location of this well is located in state code 42 or Texas. Keep in mind that the bottom hole location of This well may be in a contiguous state such as Louisiana, Oklahoma, or New Mexico, but the API number is based on the surface location. Please refer to a State Code List for a complete listing of state and pseudo-state codes. County Code: The third through fifth digits of the API number represent the surface location of the county where the well is located. In This example the well is located in county code 301 or Zapata County. Again, keep in mind that the bottom hole location may be in a contiguous county, but the API number is based on the surface location. Please note that all county codes are odd numbers except for Kern County, California. This was designed for expansion. Kern County s well population has exceeded 99,999 so we use 029 for the first 99,999 wells and 030 for the wells drilled after that. February,

130 Appendix A Enerdeq Browser v2.6 Training Reference County codes are also used to designate offshore areas for both state and federal waters. Please refer to a County Code Listing for a complete listing of county and pseudo-county codes. Unique Well Identifier: In most states, the sixth through tenth digit of the API number is assigned as a unique number within the county the well is drilled. In a few states, the unique well identifier is based on the permit number and may only be unique within the state. In most cases the series has been used for IHS Historical wells (i.e. wells drilled prior to the issuance of API numbers). The series are used by most states for current numbers. Directional Sidetrack Codes: The sidetrack code is the eleventh and twelfth digits of the API number. It is used to identify each sidetrack uniquely for the well. A good rule of thumb is to increment the sidetrack code for each unique bottom hole location of the well. In the example above, this is the third sidetrack off the original wellbore. Event Sequence Code: The thirteenth and fourteenth digits of the API number indicate how many operations there have been on a single borehole. It is incremented only when part of the borehole identified in the 11 th and 12 th positions is deepened, recompleted, or worked over. Since the example above shows a code of 00, we know that this is the original drill of sidetrack #3 even though the original and either or both of the previous sidetracks may have been recompleted. (It is important to remember that this code may vary between data vendors based on their database recompletion criteria.) 124 February, 2015
