21 RFITT Bipolar Radiofrequency-Induced Thermotherapy The bipolar radiofrequency induced thermotherapy (RFITT) technique represents an effective, user-friendly and safe alternative to conventional surgical methods, to laser technology and to monopolar high-frequency applications. How Does Bipolar RFITT Work? The method is based on the principle of local thermal destruction of pathologically altered tissue by use of radiofrequency current. In other words, by heating to over 80 C, the affected tissue is destroyed and resorbed by the body within a short time, leading to a volume reduction of the tissue. In addition, the body forms scar tissue which results in the tightening of the treated area. The bipolar electrode arrangement used in the Celon applicator permits precise delimitation of the treatment area, because the flow of current takes place exclusively between the two poles at the tip of the applicator. In monopolar methods, by contrast, the current flows through the whole body of the patient. Bipolar RFITT is thus even suitable for treating patients with heart pacemakers. A further advantage of the Celon method is that in most cases it can be performed on an outpatient basis under local anaesthesia and with only minimal pain and discomfort to the patient.
