4 Taking Extraoral Photos For 3 Extraoral Views Set Menu to Auto Flash on Monitor settings off so you can see image better Hold camera horizontal Place your left index finger above the lens and point the lens at the center of the nose in Frontal and Smiling, have patient rotate head in all directions until straight Lightly press the shoot button for it to focus then press it all the way to shoot the If the flash is causing hot spots, back up and zoom in or place layers of frosted tape over the flash to diffuse the flash light In the Profile view holding the camera horizontally point the lens at the center of the profile at nose/eye level Have the patient rotate the head in all directions until straight and exactly on profile Taking the Extraoral Closeup of the Lower Third of the Face Press Menu Arrow up to Magnifying Glass Flash on Point lens to mouth, have the patient move head in all directions to come in straight on Back up and telephoto in if necessary to focus in on desired view for best illumination Taking the Five Intraoral Views Frontal Select best retractors and have the patient hold them properly Hold camera horizontal pointing the lens straight onto the patient s facial midline Have the patient rotate head in all directions so that the camera lens is coming in straight Created by Dr. Rebecca Poling 2006 Page 4 of 7
5 in all directions Patient s Right Intraoral with a Mirror May need to place patient supine and take this view upside down for light to flash into the posteriors Have the patient hold the rounded large retractor loosely in the front slightly pulling over to the patient s left separating the lips Insert a pointed mirror, retract it out at 45 degrees, holding it out and off of the last molars Position the camera lens to come in at 90 degrees to the mirror surface necessary (Reposition the camera to come from the front of the patient if the flash is not illuminating the posterior teeth) Patient s Left Intraoral with a Mirror May need to place patient supine and take this view upside down for light to flash into the posteriors Have the patient hold the rounded large retractor loosely in the front pulling the retractor to the patient s right separating the lips Insert a pointed mirror, retract it out at 45 degrees, holding it out and off of the last molars Position the camera lens to come in at 90 degrees to the mirror surface necessary (Reposition the camera to come from the front of the patient if the flash is not illuminating the posterior teeth, this will require using the hands crossover technique holding of the camera in the right hand and the mirror in the left hand) Created by Dr. Rebecca Poling 2006 Page 5 of 7
6 Patient s Maxillary Occlusal with a Mirror May need to place patient supine and take this view upside down from the top of the patient s head for the light to flash into the posterior palate Have the patient hold the rounded small retractors up and out in the front pulling the retractors up in a smile Insert a wide occlusal mirror, tilting it down off of the occlusal surfaces of the teeth at 45 degrees, holding the back edge of the mirror down evenly and off of the last molars Have the patient tilt his/her head down, opening wide, and position the camera lens to point down into the mirror coming in at 90 degrees to the mirror surface necessary (Reposition the camera to come from the front of the patient if the flash is not illuminating the posterior teeth) Patient s Mandibular Occlusal with a Mirror Position yourself in front of the patient Have the patient hold the rounded small retractors down and out in the front pulling the retractors down in a frown Insert a wide occlusal mirror, tilting it up off of the occlusal surfaces of the teeth at 45 degrees, holding the back edge of the mirror up evenly and off of the last molars Coming in from the front of the patient, have the patient tilt his/her head back opening as wide as possible but still retracting the lips off of the teeth, position the camera lens to point up into the mirror coming in at 90 degrees to the mirror surface Created by Dr. Rebecca Poling 2006 Page 6 of 7
7 necessary Reviewing photos and deleting extra photos Move slider and select Play Mode Press twice the W (for wide angle) on the toggle button at the top Zoom out so that all photos just taken are visible Press Delete button at the bottom Right Arrow once to Select Press the Up Arrow and Left Arrow until the green box surrounds a photo you want to delete Press the center button once to select that photo to delete and a delete trash can symbol should appear on the photo Press the Arrow buttons to position the green box on the next photo to be deleted Press the center button once to select that photo to delete and a delete trash can symbol should appear on the photo Repeat this process until all photos to be deleted are selected Created by Dr. Rebecca Poling 2006 Page 7 of 7
