Introduction and Camera System Contents Dental Learning Centers custom manufactures proprietary adapters (patent pending). The Close-up adapter (#1) with the add-on lens gives the magnification needed for clinical pictures. Equally important, DLC has expertly maximized the cameras many functions and settings for dentistry. The new LoLite Velscope Adapter (#2) is a custom made optional piece that enables VELscope oral screening documentation. The DentalFoto arrives to you tested, custom set with charged batteries and memory card inserted. The kit shown contains: 1. The Canon PowerShot A630 digital camera with all of the original contents. A protective aluminum carrying case. 3. Three Secure Digital (SD) memory cards, one 16 mb card that comes with the camera plus two 256 mb cards. 4. Two sets of high performance chargeable batteries. 5. Trickle battery charger. A Multi slot, high speed, travel card reader with the driver disk found in the accessory kit (only needed for Windows 98 operating systems). Lens diopter. Lens cap. 5 Basic Camera Operation for Clinical Photography 1. ATTACH LENS EXTENSION ADAPTER (for close-up photography only): Remove lens ring by pushing button, turn counter clockwise. Attach the Lens Extension Adapter (bayonet style, push and twist until it locks in place). 2. POWER OFF /ON: #1 ON/OFF Button, #2 set Mode Dial TO C for close up pictures or P for full face (remove extension adapter), #3 slide Mode Switch right to take a picture, slide it left to view pictures (shown left to view pictures). 3. CALIBRATING PICTURE COLOR, CUSTOM WHITE BALANCE: It is recommended that you White Balance the camera in your operatory using a gray card (ask for one at your local camera store). The setting is retained and doesn t need to be reset unless lighting changes and you think the color is incorrect. This adjusts the camera picture color to your lighting environment. You will need the gray card or white paper (two or three sheets so you can t see through it). a. Place the camera in Camera Mode (live to take a picture). b. Put MODE DIAL on top of camera to C. c. Push the FUNC SET button, toggle down one time and set to Custom (MENU Evaluate White Bal). d. Put your camera about 6 inches above the card or paper so you just see the paper. Push the MENU button (lower right on the back of the camera). The flash will go off and color correct your camera. See page 59 in the Canon Advanced Camera User Guide for more information. Push Function button again. To save that setting push Menu, toggle up one time to Save Settings, push Set, then OK. 5

4. TAKING A PICTURE is a two step process: Push the shutter button DOWN half way until you feel the first pressure point. Don t lift your finger, wait for the audible chirp, and then push down the rest of the way to take a picture. The picture is recorded and will stay on the back LCD for 2 seconds. HINT: Activate Manual Focus to assist you with focusing. Push MF on back of the camera to activate the magnified area. Move closer and farther away to see where the camera is best focused. The magnifier doesn t work in Digital Zoom. 5. DELETING PICTURES: a. Slide switch to View Mode b. Single Images, Push Erase Button (#1) then (#2) Set. c. All Images 1) Push #1 MENU. 2) Jog down to Erase all. 3) Push #2 SET. 4) Jog to OK then SET. 6

6. CHANGING THE RECHRGABLE BATTERIES: Push BATT. OPEN door, exchange batteries. 7. SECURE DIGITAL (SD) MEMORY CARD. To remove the card, push in and it will pop out. 8. COMPUTER & PRINTER HOOK UP AND VIEWING The images from the Canon DentalFoto can be input into the computer from either the USB card reader (provided) or direct connect with a USB cable (provided). The camera includes the latest Pic Bridge technology allowing direct connection to Pic Bridge printers. a. The card reader is plug and play for Windows XP, Windows 2000 and ME operating systems. Use the driver disc provided in the Canon box for Windows 98 operating systems. b. Once plugged in, Windows recognizes the card reader and assigns it drive letters, for example, E, F, G, and H. These can be seen in My Computer. The Secure Digital (SD) memory card images are found in one of the drive letters. Once opened, the correct drive letter will show the folder DCIM. Your image files are found inside the DCIM folder usually 100CANON. c. Images can also be viewed on a television screen directly from the camera through a video cable (provided). 9 Full Face Photography 1) Remove Lens Extension Adapter, put camera Mode Dial on P and make sure that the camera is manually zoomed in to 4x, all of the way. 2) Working distance is about 4 feet. 3) I have found better aesthetic results with the patient sitting upright and the photographer standing. Set dental chair as low as it will go and back as far forward as it will go. You can more easily control angle of the camera to the face and people often look better looking up because you see less flab below their chin. 4) You may want to place a backdrop (see below) behind the patient s head. I recommend a gray foam board attainable at an office supply store. 5) Focus first, get a big cheesy full broadcast smile, then take the picture. Clinical Intraoral Photography 9

1) SETTINGS & EQUIPMENT: Put on the lens adapter and set the Mode Dial to C which is for closeup photography; bowl of warm water, rhodium #4a adult mirror, #1b buccal mirror, cotton towel to dry mirrors, two (2) wire cheek retractors, and two (2) individual plastic retractors (optional). Child occlusal and buccal mirror is available. 2) CHAIR POSITION: Put the dental chair horizontal (supine). 3) WORKING DISTANCE: The in-focus distance is between 4 ½ to 7 inches from your subject (measuring from the end of the lens). Photographer is at 9 O clock position and standing. 4) NATURAL SMILE & RETRACTED ANTERIOR: a) NATURAL SMILE: Square camera to face, move the camera closer until you don t see the nose but you do see the corners of the mouth (end of lens is about 5 inches from subject). b) Line of occlusion is horizontal. c) RETRACTED ANTERIOR: Insert retractors, puff out cheeks. Focus point on lateral or canine, reframe as shown. Biting down to show occlusion; teeth slightly apart shows incisal edges and translucency better. 5) LOWER OCCLUSAL (mirror in warm water): a) Insert wire cheek retractors pulling down and out on lower lip. b) Insert occlusal mirror so edge rests on retro molar pad. Tilt toward maxilla as far as you can. c) Goal is to have mirror at 45 10

degrees to the teeth and camera 45 degrees to the mirror. 45 degrees + 45 degrees = 90 degrees to the biting surface of the teeth. d) Square up camera, move about five inches away; focus, then shoot. Hint, just before taking the picture ask patient to open their widest if mirror angle is a problem. 6) UPPER OCCLUSAL: a) Approach from head of the dental chair (around 12 O clock). b) To avoid the top teeth from blocking the mirror, lean forward looking back at the mirror and have the patient lift their chin up. c) Get arch in view, focus off of the occlusal surface of a premolar, reframe to get arch. 7) RIGHT BUCCAL CORRIDOR: a) Insert retractor in patients left move it toward the midline. This is in place to hold the lips apart. b) Insert the wire retractor in patient s right. Insert the buccal mirror; have the patient remove the RIGHT retractor. c) Retract with the mirror and adjust so the line of occlusion parallels the mirror. Retract mirror to get good view of teeth. Hint: Do not push mirror too deep in or fulcrum off of the gingiva, it hurts! The loose part of the cheek will often retract quite far. d) Move camera in about 5 inches away and parallel it to the line of occlusion you see in the mirror. e) Ideally, you want to see all of the posterior teeth to ½ of tooth number nine. The left buccal picture would see half of tooth #8. 11

8) LEFT BUCCAL CORRIDOR: Because cameras are right handed, the left buccal picture can tangle you up or make you lean far over the patient. Having tried different variations, I have found that the left buccal picture is easiest from the 12 o clock position. This is similar to the upper occlusal picture. The rest of the technique is the same as the right buccal picture. DLC Rhodium Mirror Kit (item# DF-M) 1) Rhodium professional mirrors have superior reflective properties compared to chrome and are recommended by Dental Learning Centers. Shown, extra long adult, non-slotted wide buccal. 2) The stainless steel retractors are excellent for anterior smile, occlusal and buccal views. 3) Instructions for the Care and Cleaning of Intra-Oral Mirrors The surface of the mirrors is rhodium, a durable metal but being glass, it can be scratched or broken. While it can be considered a hardy surface, certain precautions should be taken in the care and cleaning of your mirror. Alcohol or a non-alkaline soap solution may be used to remove oils or other kind of contaminants. Gentle rubbing with a grit-free cloth is fine and will not harm the mirror. A final wash with alcohol is recommended. A little experimenting over a small region will show whether the treatment given is too rough. Remove loose dust by brushing with a tuft of clean cotton or blowing any particles off using compressed air. Okay for repeated autoclave sterilization (bag the mirrors for protection) Cold sterilization has had mixed results sometimes causing streaking Do not use bleach OK to use alcohol Please note that we have no information regarding any of the above processes as they pertain to any specific microorganisms; and therefore cannot offer the above information as a possible safeguard against any particular disease. 12

Low Light VELscope Clinical Photography 1. Still Image Capture a. Unscrew and remove original gray eyepiece from the VELscope. b. Remove chrome lens ring from the PowerShot camera. c. Push firm to snap, twist and lock LoLite VELscope Adapter onto camera. (See pictures to the right) d. Turn VELscope on and let it warm up 2. DentalFoto Settings a. Power on camera, place in camera mode (live). b. Put Mode Dial to M (Manual), digital zoom, 800 iso. c. Push Jog Dial until you see MF (Manual Focus) on the back of the LCD display d. Zoom in until you see 6.4x 13

e. Darken the room as much as possible f. The focus point is fixed. You will be in focus at 5 ½ inches from the subject, consistently. The field size you are looking at is about 1 ½ inches. g. Move the DentalFoto/VELscope in and out until your subject is in focus. Push the shutter and take the picture. h. HINT: STAY VERY STEADY AS YOU ARE SHOOTING AT A RELATIVELY SLOW SHUTTER SPEED OF 1/30th Sec. 3. Video Capture a. Put Mode Dial on Video (THE ICON LOOKS LIKE A MOVIE CAMERA). b. Select MF on Jog Dial. c. Zoom in to 6.4x. d. Move in and get subject in focus. e. To start the video clip push the Shutter Button; to stop push the Shutter Button again. f. You should have at least 50 mb left on your memory card or your movie may be cut short. g. To play, slide the Mode Switch to View and push the Set button twice. 14

Trouble Shooting Most Frequent Problems 1. OUT-OF-FOCUS CLOSE-UP PICTURES: a. Usually too close to the subject, working distance is 4 to 7 ½ inches. b. For most close-up pictures, when you put the camera on C it zooms in a predetermined amount. DO NOT ZOOM IN MORE EXCEPT FOR QUADRANT PICTURES. The C setting zooms in the perfect magnification level for a natural smile, retracted anterior, and occlusal views. For buccal corridor and quadrants, you may zoom in all the way. c. Maxillary full arch out-of-focus. Try this technique. i. Get the full arch in the view finder, ii. Pivot and focus on a pre-molar, push the shutter button until you feel the first stop, do not lift your finger off of the shutter button, then pivot back to the full arch and take the picture. d. Setting focus then changing distance. Once you set the focus keep the distance. e. Focusing is a two step process; push the shutter button until you feel the first pressure point this lets the camera focus; then push down all the way and the picture will be taken. f. Anterior picture blurry. If teeth are parted, focus on a tooth, not between the teeth. g. Low light conditions. The camera needs sufficient light. h. The extension and or close- up lens are not on. 2. OUT OF FOCUS PORTRAIT PICTURES: a. Extension adapter is left on. b. Low light conditions. c. Setting focus then changing distance. Once you set the focus, keep the distance. 3. SHADOWS IN LOWER RIGHT CORNER OF THE PICTURE: a. Finger is covering flash. b. You have zoomed out toward wide angle. Put Mode Dial on C and don t tinker. 15
