6 Operators greatest challenges What are the challenges? Revenue leakage and churn What s the problem: Internet players (ISPs) and xvnos better meet users demands for services and/or rates Rich communication services currently on offer attract just a small slice of the subscriber base (Gen C), and not the mass market Operators networks do not interoperate The cost (OPEX) and time involved in delivering new services to devices in a multi-access environment What s the problem? Services are inconvenient because each application requires a separate client 6 Nokia Siemens Networks

7 Importance of interoperability What are the challenges? Interoperability is critical to services success, as SMS growth in the late 90s attests; It was much faster in countries introducing SMS interconnection Case in point: US mobile operators were among the last to adopt SMS interoperability, but once they did, SMS traffic increased 100% 600 Number of SMS messages millions Jan '99 SMS business without Interconnection and roaming Apr '99 Jul '99 Oct '99 Jan '00 Apr '00 Jul '00 Source: MDA, Sep Nokia Siemens Networks

8 Main end users' challenges What are the challenges? The convenience gap each application requires a separate client; different services require different devices The interoperability gap operators and SPs fail to interwork The portability gap people can t use their PCs and mobile devices effectively and seamlessly Identity hassle keeping track of multiple user IDs and passwords 8 Nokia Siemens Networks
