4 Optimizing the workplace is the new business mantra The consumerization of IT in the workplace has put pressure on IT departments to keep up with employees desire for a more flexible, mobile workstyle. Deciding how best to equip employees with the right mobile technology depends on factors such as their role, where they are located, and how much time they spend in the office. Gearing up for a more mobile workforce For IT, supporting an increasingly mobile workforce presents new challenges and considerations in security and technical support, as it means managing multiple client devices and platforms. On the device front, we re seeing more businesses look beyond traditional business notebooks as new form factors such as 2 in 1s present opportunities to raise productivity. Detachable tablets find a place in today s mobile workplace Windows 10 adds a new touch to greater mobility New touch features and applications are driving the move towards touch-enabled devices. 5 Mobility solutions transcend industry boundaries From retail to financial services, healthcare to manufacturing, mobility is giving rise to a more empowered workforce. The latest touch and pen features open the door to new possibilities, especially in industries that have long relied on paper-intensive workflows. Customer service and field service teams can say goodbye to print materials and writing on clipboards. Retail and hospitality service counters are starting to deploy 2 in 1s to replace existing desktops and traditional notebooks to provide a better experience for customers. In showrooms, staff can also better present e-brochures to their customers in the slate form, and reconnect back the keyboard to process orders or do other productivity work. This helps to eliminate the need to have more than one device. In hotels, apart from check-in counters, service staff can also use their 2 in 1 device to process check-ins on the move. The logistics industry has started using hybrid devices for stock taking, warehouse inventory checking, and on-the-road delivery.

6 Taking the pain out of PC management For IT, supporting an increasingly mobile workforce presents new challenges and considerations in security and technical support, as it means managing multiple client devices and platforms. 4 KEY AREAS in which device manufacturers are addressing the IT department s pain points: Device support and warranty Performance and peripherals Security Acquisition costs Device support and warranty Device and warranty support for 2 in 1s are as comprehensive as traditional notebooks. Device manufacturers are providing similar and comprehensive coverage for the devices in order to address concerns that these form factors may not be as robust as a traditional notebook. Performance and peripherals With the new generation of processors, these 2 in 1 devices sport improvements in performance and battery life, and are more sleek and lightweight. With docking stations and peripheral extension modules, the new form factors are not short of extending their functionality and linking with other devices, including using bigger monitor screens. With the latest processor technology in the market, limited performance on a hybrid device is no longer an issue. 7 Enhanced endpoint security Hardware enhanced security adds layers of protection that stay with the device regardless of how it is used or managed. This combined hardware and software built-in approach to security includes: Protecting user credentials + Securing the authentication data Greater resistance to theft, misuse, or impersonation by an outsider Biometric authentication Intel s 6th generation vpro processors and Windows 10 OS improve the physical security of devices and eliminates the need for passwords. PIN, biometrics, keys, tokens and associated certificates are captured, encrypted, matched, and stored in the hardware. Windows OS Device security and manageability is easier with remote app and application provisioning as well as simplified management of patches and application updates across devices on a single platform. Getting more for less Price points of 2 in 1s are dropping to a point where they are now close to a traditional notebook with similar performance, breaking the price barrier. 8 Growing adoption of hybrid form factors TRENDS The evolution toward 2 in 1 form factors in the enterprise space has begun. Adoption of these devices have been growing every year since 2013, and it will continue to do so as businesses replace their aging PC assets. IDC expects continued adoption in the upcoming years. 9 Essential guidance With the enhancements in processor and mobile technologies, and the range of sleek and slim portable form factor devices available today, this is a great time for a new device. However, IT decision makers have many factors to consider before making the final purchase. HERE ARE THREE KEY QUESTIONS: Can the vendor provide device warranty and support like they do for traditional notebooks at similar cost? Is it practical to provide these devices on a companywide deployment or to certain specific mobile workers? Can the vendor provide a range of devices to allow for a CYOD policy in the company? Advice worth keeping: The PC is no longer just a device but a means to deliver a solution to help staff be more innovative and more productive. That said, an increasing number of ultraslim models still provide some of the benefits of mobility in a small form factor. Ultraslim notebooks continue to increase as a percentage of notebooks sold in Asia/Pacific, and will eventually become more mainstream over the upcoming years. For businesses that still prefer to stick to traditional clamshell notebooks, it is worth noting that more accessories like existing power bricks and docking stations are available for 2 in 1s. Therefore, it s important for businesses to choose devices suitable for different staff requirements and needs of the business, so a heterogeneous mix of form factors and operating systems can make sense in many situations. This is now the time to act. Let go of old fears, and embrace the evolution of the PC to make one s business more mobile, agile, and ultimately competitive in this new world.
