3 Motivation A lot of research is going on in Europe in various domains Exploitation needs acceleration Innovation through large companies and SMEs should be sought Porting research to standards Instruments for funding SMEs and collaborations with large companies are essential Innovation management/manager: To monitor market trends and drive the respective business cases for creating and managing innovation Exploitation Research Innovation (SMEs etc.) Standards 3

5 Indicative Innovation Management Approach in 5GPPP/Fantastic-5G project Objectives Approach For big companies it is essential to maximize the synergy between corporate strategy/ business development and R&D For SMEs it is essential to align the development and prototypes of R&D with emerging business opportunities For academia it is essential to align R&D conducted in universities with business opportunities in companies Stimulate engagement/ collaboration of R&D departments of big companies with business development ones Engagement of investors/ VCs for preseed/ seed funding of novel ideas and turning them to successful business Also, the exploitation of EC investment vehicles and instruments such as Accelerators, SME Instrument etc. can be pursued Influence standards and IPR generation 5 Academia is working on numerous research projects which can propose and participate in pre-standardization activities which can be endorsed by industry as well

11 Standardization and 5G 5G R&D has huge standardization potentials in areas such as: Softwarization and virtualization (e.g., standardization activities through ETSI NFV) New air interfaces (e.g., standardization activities through 3GPP) Flexible MAC/RRM solutions (e.g., standardization activities through 3GPP) Machine-Type Communications, Mission Critical Communications, Vehicular Communications (e.g., standardization activities through 3GPP/ETSI) 5GPPP has also established a pre-standardization working group: Identify standardization and regulatory bodies to align with e.g. ETSI, 3GPP, IEEE and other relevant standards bodies, & ITU-R Develop a roadmap of relevant standardization and regulatory topics for 5G Influencing pre-standardization on 5G and related R&D 11

12 Conclusions and Way Forward Challenges ahead Continuous collaboration with academia for supporting and enhancing research and strengthening exploitation opportunities Facilitate collaborations with industry Seeking funding instruments Exploitation of potentials from Public-Private Partnerships for collaboration among industry, SMEs and academia A lot of research is going on in academia and industry It is important to link research to standards Instruments for applied research are important in order to lead to commercialization and standardization 12
