2 Main considerations Railways are happy with GSM-R and wish to keep it as long as possible (UIC). But, ERA, UIC and GSM-R IG active in defining a Next Gen communication network. Main drivers: GSM obsolescence concerns and emergence of new critical applications. Current timelines under discussion plan the start for migration in Several questions: spectrum, migration, bearer, core intelligence, network ownership.! 3 Addressing the Lifecycle concerns! GSM-R Industry Group supports GSM-R at least until On September 9 this statement was formally issued to UIC, DG Move, ERA and UNISIG. Support at least till 2030 includes Maintenance of GSM-R systems hardware/software. Life cycle management. Support of CCS TSI / EIRENE requirements. Migration towards IP. 4 Evolution criteria: No Revolution! It is mandatory to focus on railway operational functionalities. Migration from GSM-R networks Smooth transition from existing networks to the new architecture, which implies to design a risk-free, in-service migration strategy to minimize operational disruption. Co-existence and Interworking During the migration phase the designed interworking has to deliver a consistent service. The coexistence is also required for roaming between old networks and migrated networks.
