3 GSM-R for ETCS overview The GSM-R is a mature technology, in commercial service since more than 10 years This system supports operational voice communications and data transmission for signaling In order to fulfill the Quality of Services requirements for GSM-R as bearer for ETCS level l 2 is required a very fine tuning for the whole system The deployment of a complex system such as the GSM-R network is an iterative process 3

6 GSM-R QoS design The implementation of Quality of Service follows these steps: 1. Preliminary radio coverage study Scope: choice of positioning and radio site numerosity 2. System implementation and check of performance Expected result : pre-planning planning network Scope: system commissioning and check of planning work 3. Performance improvement and network tuning Expected result: Detail of corrective actions to better meet QoS requirements Scope: commissioning of correctives actions 4. Final check of system performance Expected result: improvement of QoS parameters to achieve the design Scope: Check specifications of performance Expected result: achievement of project specifications 6

7 Tools for tuning the GSM-R Rnetwork The GSM-R IG members developed some aiding tools for: Detection of all abnormal situations that can occur during the train trip EDOR with data logging units Test Equipment for Quality of Service Coverage tests (neighbor cell, graphic display) Protocol analysis Regression testst Functional tests (VGCS, VBS, PtP, SMS, ) GPS location and data reference 7

9 Diagnostic tools for ETCS European Vital Computer Igsm + diagnostic data EDOR GSM-R net Radio Block Center The GSM-R network and ETCS Data Only Radio (EDOR) are key components to guarantee the high demanding end-to-end Quality of Services The EDOR is placed outside the EVC and it is a big issue for the system integrators t diagnose the system behavior during the data exchange. The diagnostic tool, running on the Radio Mobile Module inside EDOR, can report significant information to the EVC through a special interface which interleaves with Igsm The diagnostic events are stored in a special area of the GSM-R modem and these can be used from the EVC for diagnostic purposes whenever strange events occurs during the train operations 9

10 Solutions adopted The diagnostic interface can operate: 1. Detecting any suspicious events from the Radio Module since its startup (power on in the on board equipment); 2. Assist the EVC in order to detect a degradation in the data transmission on the GSM-R carrier (detection of interferences in served areas) 3. Continuous monitoring of the main activities from the Radio Module during the normal operations of the train (during train movement in the ERTMS environment). 10

11 Basic Principle The diagnostic operation could be extended to the Data Radio in order to detect the events, like: 1. unavailability of the Data Link for: a. poor RF field strength b. Unregistered status (many kind of causes) c. Temperature excess in the train cabinet 2. MOC / MTC fail such as the GSM-R network external cause 3. Unexpected MOC / MTC termination ti 4. SIM card failure 5. the interferences affecting the reception 11

12 Diagnostic Advantages Possibility to discriminate if the fault event is due to the network or to the radio The awareness from which side is the problem, allows a better system tuning Possibility of a first-level troubleshooting, also from non technical personnel Possibility to integrate the on board diagnostic with the ground based diagnostic system 12

14 Interferences from Public Networks GSM-R is affected by interferences coming from public operators Increasing use of UMTS in the bands next to GSM-R Tomorrow Yesterday Today GSM-R GSM UMTS + + UMTS EGSM LTE GSM-R GSM-R GSM UMTS + UMTS + EGSM LTE proposed extension to GSMR band and it will get worse! UIC is working at the EU level in an attempt to regulate public operators to take notice of the problems they are causing. However this will take sometime and a solution is required NOW!!! 14

15 Possible ways forward Improved Radio Modules with built-in improved filtering capabilities External filters installed on the train Radio coverage optimization i with additional BTS Accept that the very worst cases may still require some negotiation with network operators (e.g. cells reconfiguration) 15

16 Possible ways forward While the optimum solution would be the regulatory approach, at EU/UIC level with their member states in the interim the Industry Group members are able to offer any of the above solutions to help increase the resilience of the GSM-R system against a fast changing g public network The GSM-R IG members are able to support this process with the mentioned technical/engineering solutions. 16
