Alcatel 1671 Service Connect

Service providers are looking for a solution that allows them to realize advanced capabilities today, while charting a clear migration strategy from traditional equipment to next generation functionality. They need the features and densities that will ensure traffic demands don t outpace the network infrastructure. With the Alcatel 1671 Service Connect (SC), service providers can rest assured that their networks will be well equipped, not only for present demands, but also for future requirements.

THE ALCATEL 1671 SC MULTISERVICE CROSS-CONNECT The Alcatel 1671 Service Connect (SC) is a next generation, multiservice cross-connect designed to support the growing demand for multiple services, including Ethernet and data aggregation. Engineered for speeds from DS1 to OC-192, the Alcatel 1671 SC goes beyond the traditional cross-connect functionality to provide extensive grooming capabilities to maximize the efficiency of the transport network. The innovative Alcatel 1671 SC provides unrivaled density (1,536 DS3 equivalents per system now, and will grow to 4,000) and a robust feature set, including wideband, broadband, and planned narrowband and data aggregation functionalities. aggregation point, efficiently bringing data and voice traffic flows onto the SONET optical network (see Figure 1). The multiservice capabilities of the Alcatel 1671 SC make it possible to extend the data network closer to the customer and support adaptation to a unified MPLS core. This allows the service provider to make more efficient use of expensive router ports used for the delivery of data services, leading to increased cost efficiencies. In fact, with a reduced delivery cost, it may be possible to extend services to areas where in the past it was not economically feasible to do so. The Alcatel 1671 SC allows service providers to maximize their network infrastructure through the efficient grooming and filling of transport pipes. By eliminating partially filled pipes, service providers can maximize network bandwidth, streamline their operations, and more cost-effectively manage and maintain their networks. A broad range of customer interfaces enables the Alcatel 1671 SC to function as a multiservice Network planners believe that maximizing revenue and minimizing cost is best achieved through the consolidation of network elements, which increases overall network efficiency. The Alcatel 1671 SC provides a path towards central office and network optimization by offering the features and densities needed to achieve these goals. 4 FEATURES AND BENEFITS Interfaces With a planned per-rack density ranging from 80 Gb/s to 240 Gb/s, the Alcatel 1671 SC offers the following interfaces: SONET 1-port OC-48 (SR) 4-port OC-48 (SR)* 12-port DS3/EC1 (BNC rear or front accessible) 12-port OC-3 (IR) 4-port OC-12 (IR) 1-port OC-192 (LR)* Features All service providers have a similar goal: to cost-effectively deliver the greatest number of services to their customers in the least amount of time. The Alcatel 1671 SC makes it possible for service providers to meet this objective by providing superior density and unmatched scalability. Flexible Matrix In addition to a full range of interfaces, the Alcatel 1671 SC promotes network versatility by supporting a variety of network topologies. As a multiservice cross-connect, the Alcatel 1671 SC offers a valuable solution for multiprotocol networks. As versatile as it is efficient, the Alcatel 1671 SC can provide STS-1 and VT1.5 grooming, enabling carriers to maximize the productivity of their infrastructure. Carrier-Class Reliability Reliability is critical in a next-generation network element. Whether a service provider is transporting voice or data, the Alcatel 1671 SC platform offers unrivaled performance reliability by adhering to NEBS Level 3 standards as defined in GR-63-CORE. The Alcatel 1671 SC can be deployed with all key components redundant, resulting in up to 100 percent increased resiliency compared to the competition. The Alcatel 1671 SC provides a Copy 0/Copy 1 diverse matrix structure in which traffic flows through both matrix copies and the I/O determines the best path. This allows for seamless scalability and ease of maintenance. 84-port DS1 shelf Figure 2 - Alcatel 1671 SC Provides SONET Protection for Voice and Data Traffic ETHERNET 2-port Gigabit Ethernet (STS-1 virtual concatenation), 1000Base-LX or 1000Base-SX optics* Voice Networks Data Networks SONET Provides Stability Transparent to Protocol 1671 SC * Planned Uniting Voice and Data Networks over SONET Technology > 2 ALCATEL

Unparalleled Capacity with Room to Grow The Alcatel 1671 SC sets the new industry standard offering 80 Gb/s to 240 Gb/s* capacity in one seven-foot I/O rack. Typically, new platforms are designed with one type of customer in mind. Alcatel considered all types of service providers, small and large, when developing the Alcatel 1671 SC. The result is a per rack capacity that scales in small increments promoting a payas-you-grow philosophy. Coupled with a wide array of customer interfaces, the Alcatel 1671 SC is designed to meet the needs of a variety of customers and applications. Customer Benefits The goal of next generation networks is to maximize the return on investment through the reduction of CAPEX and OPEX spending, while expanding the range of services offered to end customers. The Alcatel 1671 SC eases the migration from traditional services to new, advanced services by safeguarding revenues from legacy services while enabling new revenue streams. Dynamic Grooming The 80 to 240* Gb/s STS-1/VT1.5 switch fabric on the Alcatel 1671 SC allows for optimal grooming in a variety of customer applications. In addition to reducing physical space requirements, the dual-functionality of the Alcatel 1671 SC fabric benefits network operators by reducing the number of network elements they are required to manage. Although new, cutting-edge technology is important to service providers, simplicity is still a focus. The dynamic switching subsystem of the Alcatel 1671 SC creates an efficient scenario where traffic is categorized into either wideband or broadband as it traverses the crossconnect, thus eliminating any unnecessary grooming and the associated cost. ALCATEL 3 >

High-Density Solution One way to ensure service providers that their investment in new equipment will be protected is to provide them with densities that accommodate their requirements for the near term, while allowing them to plan for the long term. The Alcatel 1671 SC offers 1,536 STS-1 equivalents in one seven-foot rack, nearly six times the density of the industry standard! Tremendous capacity with a full breadth of interfaces enables carriers to maximize their network capabilities from the core to the edge while eliminating the need to collocate smaller cross-connects. optimizing and routing traffic. This creates an ideal scenario for service providers looking to maximize network efficiency. Generalized multiprotocol label switching (GMPLS) is the protocol that enables this enhanced level of communication. The Alcatel 1671 SC is a GMPLS-ready platform, preparing service providers for the intelligent networks that lie ahead without compromising their current revenue-generating services. As a multiservice cross-connect, the Alcatel 1671 SC can function in a traditional or intelligent (GMPLS) network. Intelligent Network Adaptability Next generation networks feature intelligent network elements capable of communicating on a common plane for the purpose of > 4 ALCATEL

PUTTING THE ALCATEL 1671 SC TO WORK A Safe Landing for Wireless Traffic The role the Alcatel 1671 SC can play in a wireless service provider s network illustrates many of the cross-connect s benefits. As more and more data traffic flows to and from cell phones, wireless service providers are hardpressed to meet the demand with their current systems. They need immediate relief, and they need to implement a solution that will continue to meet their requirements as demand grows. The Alcatel 1671 SC multiservice cross-connect can be positioned along with a multiservice provisioning platform (MSPP), such as the Alcatel 1677 SONET Link, to meet wireless service providers needs, as shown in Figure 3. The Alcatel 1677 SONET Link optimizes the portion of the network that receives the wireless call and delivers it to the voice switch, by: > Collecting large amounts of low speed traffic and transporting it over a high speed ring > Minimizing leased line costs Figure 3 - Alcatel 1671 SC at Work in a Wireless Network T1 T1 T1 OC-3/12/48 (Leased) 1677 SONET Link The Alcatel 1671 SC acting as the wideband cross-connect, by: > Grooming traffic to minimize MSC ports > Providing transmultiplexing and VT 1.5 grooming only as needed Providing IXCs with a Converged Infrastructure The Alcatel 1671 SC can also be used to enable interexchange carriers to collapse their narrowband, wideband and broadband switching layers into a single, converged infrastructure, as shown back in Figure 1.
