FLASHWAVE 4010 Extending SONET Benefits to the Edge of the Network

Introduction Building new features, expanding capacity and, of course, adding IP services to network equipment has garnered plenty of attention from the media and analysts. So much so, that in many instances, the equivalent to the multi-tooled, Swiss-knife type solution is frequently offered when a simple blade is all that is really needed. Few will deny the growing demand for Local Area Network (LAN) interconnection and Storage Area Networking (SAN) applications, but the market for meat and potatoes type DS1 and DS3 private line services remains strong across North America with new installations consistently reaching hundreds of DS3 and thousands of DS1 private line services every month. Unfortunately for carriers, this former cash cow now features razor-thin margins resulting from many years of intense price competition by alternative service providers. To make this opportunity profitable, carriers need a single, margin-friendly blade approach that is not encumbered by additional features or the associated cost of multiservice solutions. Fujitsu is the market leader in the metro SONET market with over 300,000 systems installed in North America. As such, Fujitsu was the obvious place for carriers to look for this single-blade solution. The message was clear: first, build a low cost device that will deliver the margins required for profitability; second, make it easy to install to minimize operational costs; third, simplify the provisioning so that services can be set up and torn down rapidly to keep up with demand; and fourth, build the device for deployment in a variety of customer environments, bearing in mind space and power constraints. Simple Solution for a Complex Network Fujitsu responded with the FLASHWAVE 4010 compact OC-3 access device. Small size, low cost, low power, and plug-and-play provisioning make the FLASHWAVE 4010 device an ideal solution for extending the well-known benefits of SONET farther into the edge of the network. The FLASHWAVE 4010 device reduces the complexity of installing and turning up new services. New DS1 or DS3 services can be offered in four easy steps: 1. Mount the system on the wall or in a cabinet or rack 2. Apply power 3. Connect the DS1 or DS3 services and OC-3 fibers 4. Set the node identifier, time and date 1

The combination of a single, low-cost unit and a simplified turn-up process dramatically reduces the cost of delivering services at new customer locations. The Network Element (NE) automatically creates all the required facilities, synchronization and cross-connects needed to deliver service to the customer. The FLASHWAVE 4010 device greatly reduces capital and operational expenses without sacrificing the Fujitsu standards of carrier-class reliability and capabilities. The system provides extensive SONET capabilities, NEBS Level 3 compliance and extended temperature operation (-40 to +50 C). The single enclosure design and straightforward product architecture provides the highest level of reliability. Flexible Operations Support Optimizing the potential of a network means having fully flexible and robust management solutions. The FLASHWAVE 4010 device can be managed by network management systems already in place in your network. FLEXR GT craft person interface and NETSMART 1500 Element Management System (EMS) software solutions contain features that simplify the management, provisioning and surveillance of all members of the Fujitsu FLASHWAVE family of optical solutions and legacy Fujitsu NEs. FLEXR GT or NETSMART 1500 software can download new features and functions to the FLASHWAVE 4010 device either locally or remotely, expediting and simplifying the software update distribution process across the entire network. The FLASHWAVE 4010 device is also supported by Telcordia s network management systems: TIRKS, NMA and Transport. The NE communicates with the Operational Support Systems (OSS) and other network elements using standard protocols over the SONET Data Communications Channel (DCC). With extensive Operation, Administration, Maintenance and Provisioning (OAM&P) communications capability, as well as compatibility with existing Fujitsu products, entire networks can be managed from a single location. Product Applications The FLASHWAVE 4010 device includes four, fully enclosed configurations: Seven DS1 interfaces with an unprotected OC-3 network interface Seven DS1 interfaces with a protected (1+1) OC-3 network interface Three DS3 interfaces with an unprotected OC-3 network interface Three DS3 interfaces with a protected (1+1) OC-3 network interface The combination of one low cost unit, a simplified turn-up process, small size and low power, allows the FLASHWAVE 4010 device to be deployed anywhere. This functionality allows the service provider to dramatically reduce the cost of extending the SONET network to the customer premises. 2

Central Office Extension to Customer Premises The FLASHWAVE 4010 device is ideal for extending the SONET network to a small business customer or cell site location directly from the central office. With its compact size and low power consumption, the FLASHWAVE 4010 device has few restrictions on where it can be placed, providing a simple solution to offer DS1 or DS3 services across an OC-3 fiber. Figure 1: Central Office Extension to Customer Premises In Figure 1, the FLASHWAVE 4010 device is connected by a point-to-point OC-3 fiber to an OC-3 port on a FLASHWAVE 4000 series or FLM product at the central office. The central office node can be used to terminate the traffic from and manage several FLASHWAVE 4010 nodes, minimizing the equipment needed in the central office and further improving the economics of delivering DS1 or DS3 services to the customer. The protected configurations provide a pair of OC-3 interfaces to prevent traffic disruption due to a fiber cut when diversely routed fibers are used. The optical signal is sent across two distinct physical paths, allowing the network to withstand a failure or a degradation of a single path. If the number of fibers is limited or a less expensive solution is needed, the unprotected configurations provide a single, unprotected OC-3 interface. 3

Remote Terminal Extension to Customer Premises The FLASHWAVE 4010 device can extend the reach of copper/coax-based DS1 or DS3 services from a Controlled Environmental Vault (CEV) or other types of remote terminals into the customer premises. Figure 2: Remote Terminal Extension to Customer Premises Figure 2 shows the FLASHWAVE 4010 device connected to a FLASHWAVE 4100 node in a CEV. The FLASHWAVE 4100 node operates as an optical OC-3 hub to groom the traffic from multiple FLASHWAVE 4010 nodes into an OC-3 or OC-12 connection to the central office. The switch fabric capabilities of the FLASHWAVE 4000 series products allow VT1.5 and STS grooming to occur as close as possible to the customer premises to maximum the network bandwidth. The FLASHWAVE 4010 device provides a simple, economically feasible solution for extending DS1 or DS3 services past the limited reach of copper or coax with an added benefit of SONET performance monitoring and DCC conductivity all the way to the customer premises. 4

Central Office Extension to Multi-Tenant Unit The FLASHWAVE 4010 device is the perfect solution for delivering DS1 or DS3 services in a multi-tenant unit. A multi-tenant unit is any facility with multiple business customers in one location, including high-rise office buildings and office parks. Figure 3: Central Office Extension to Multi-Tenant Unit In Figure 3, the FLASHWAVE 4010 device is shown offering DS1 or DS3 services to multiple customers on different floors of a high-rise office building. A FLASHWAVE 4000 series or FLM product in the basement of the building or at a CEV location acts as the optical hub. By using an OC-3 fiber instead of copper or coax to deliver the services, the FLASHWAVE 4010 device can extend the reach of the SONET network to enable the service provider to sell new services in new customer locations. 5

Conclusion During these challenging times, carriers need effective ways to offer new services to increase revenue while minimizing capital and operational expenses. Fujitsu has combined over ten years experience and direct involvement with major carriers to develop the new FLASHWAVE 4010 remote extension device. Figure 4: Wide Variety of Installation Options The FLASHWAVE 4010 remote extension device offers plug-and-play functionality, a small footprint and low power draw in a powerful, margin-friendly package. The FLASHWAVE 4010 device is the perfect, single-blade solution for extending the well-known benefits of SONET farther into the edge of the network, simplifying the optical delivery of DS1 or DS3 services.
