4 Introduction Thank you for choosing the JRC Technology JRC06Z 3G GPS/WCDMA Tracker. Following the shutdown of the Telstra & Optus GSM/2G networks many of the trackers previously using the GSM frequencies will no longer function. We ordered a number of units to test and found these to be the best in both appearance, build quality. functionality, usability and value for money. This User Manual is intended to assist you with installation and ongoing use of the JRC Technology 3G GPS/WCDMA Tracker. If you are not sure where to install, how to install or user functions, please us at info@jrctechnology.com.au or call us on and we will be more than happy to assist you. Note 1: Each vehicle model is different and we may not be able to provide exact information on how to install the GPS Tracker in your specific vehicle. The installation is very basic if you have a little bit of 12 volt wiring knowledge, however if you aren t confident in performing the installation, please seek the assistance of a professional. Any auto electrician should be able to perform the installation for you. We can take no responsibility for damage caused by incorrect installation. Note 2: The GPS Tracker, if installed as per the instructions is always on. That means that it is always connected to 12 volt power so that if you need to locate your vehicle at any time, the unit has power and will respond. This means that there is always a very small drain on your vehicles battery. It is highly recommended to supply the GPS with constant 12 volt power however it is important to keep the battery drain in mind.

5 Initial Setup SIM Card Setup 1. In order to use your PrePaid Telstra service in the GPS unit you need to contact Telstra and register the PrePaid account using your information. 2. During the setup they should ask if you wish to select a PrePaid plan to use with the new PrePaid service. a. If they don t ask, you may prompt them that you wish to select a Pre-Paid plan while on the phone with them and place credit on it. b. The alternative is that you select a plan and credit at a later date that suits you. They may also direct you to the Telstra Account portal to manage your credit. Refer to the Recommended Plans section in the Tips & Tricks document for information on our preferred PrePaid Plans. If you wish to use a PostPaid plan, you can request Telstra to configure a PostPaid Plan on the same SIM card provided with you GPS Tracker. Keep an eye on your usage though until you understand how much data or credit the GPS unit will use in your situation or you may end up with a large bill! 3. Once you have registered and added credit to your PrePaid Plan you are ready to start using the GPS Tracker! GPS Unit Setup 1. Unpack your GPS Tracker from the box and turn the unit so that the Orange waterproof cover is facing you and the wires are on the right side (as per the image below) 2. You will see a small gap on one side of the Orange cover. Using your finger nail or other suitable implement and light force, pry the cover open. It will make a small clip as it comes out.

6 3. Insert the SIM Card You can now insert your SIM card into the GPS unit. It is inserted as per the diagram below (with the chip facing up). Use the supplied plastic tool which can be found next to the GPS Tracker in the package you received to push the SIM in place until it snaps in place. 4. Turn the GPS unit On After inserting the SIM Card you can use the small switch to the left of the SIM Card slot to power the unit on so it automatically comes on when 12 volts are connected. This saves you having to go back into the waterproof cover. Using the supplied tool slide the switch to the RIGHT. 5. Connect the GPS to a 12 volt source using the wiring diagrams provided. 6. You should see the lights come on. Wait approximately 2 minutes for the GPS unit to get a GPS and mobile signal connection (refer to Light Descriptions table to see status).

7 Note: The Green Mobile Signal light on the right side can be hard to see if the sun is out. Shield the GPS with your hand and look closely to confirm the light is on. 7. If all 3 lights are staying solid and not flashing you can proceed to use the SMS functions to setup and test your new GPS!

8 Installation Locations Because your new GPS Tracker needs to connect to satellites when it is parked and also moving, it is critical that it is not installed under any metal pieces in your vehicle. Most GPS Tracker guides recommend installation in the front windscreen or rear window compartments, however we don t recommend these as the units are quite obvious. Recommended Location It will depend on the vehicle you are installing the GPS Tracker in as to which location is most accessible, however we have found the easiest covert location to be in behind the A pillar trim (refer to image). This piece of trim is usually very easy to remove in most vehicles and has the constant 12 volt wiring for the interior light behind it that you can tap into to get power. The negative is often switched for the interior light so it is recommended to find a suitable grounding point under the dashboard. Note: Be careful when selecting a 12 volt source behind the A pillar trim because sometimes there are two active sources when a door is open, but only one is constant, the other is triggered by the open door!

9 Alternative Locations If the A pillar trim cannot be simply removed, you have curtain airbags behind it or you cannot get constant 12 volt power behind it you will need to select another location. The wiring method is the same for any position on vehicle, but bear in mind that you may need to extend the wiring if you install away from a 12 volt power source or the fuel pump wires (if using the fuel cut off). At the end of the day, the GPS Tracker can be installed in any location where it is not blocked by metal, however you will need to choose the best location based on your vehicle type. Some possible installation locations include: Under the dashboard (not blocked by metal) o Pros: Lots of 12 volt sources, GPS can transmit through dashboard material, close to other wiring o Cons: Can be difficult to get the GPS unit high enough up under the dash without removing additional trim pieces. Under the parcel shelf (the top, not the metal frame) o Pros: 12 volt sources, GPS can transmit through parcel shelf material o Cons: Further from other wiring Under rear interior trim segments in the rear of the vehicle (above wheel arches/below windows) o Pros: Very covert, GPS can transmit through plastic trim material o Cons: May be hard to find 12 volt source, Removal of trim panels can be difficult, Further from other wiring

10 Wiring Instructions The GPS Tracker has lots of functionality in a small unit, however you don t need to connect all wires in order to make use of the core GPS Tracking functions. This section will provide a breakdown of the simple and advanced installation. You can choose which to go ahead with based on the functionality you require. Wiring Diagram

11 Simple Wiring The GPS Tracker will function and communicate location information with just the 12 volt positive and negative wires connected with the main plug. This is the simplest installation and handy if you need to quickly connect the GPS but don t have time to wire in all functions, or if you just want a simple to use tracker. Referring to the above wiring diagram, connect the Red and Black wires to a 12 volt (Fused Red wire) and Ground (Black wire) location on the vehicle. It is recommended to also wire the Orange wire to an accessory triggered wire. The ACC ON and OFF function is used for some GPS functions such as timer based online tracker uploads (eg you can set a different interval when the car is on vs when it is off). Note, these do not have to be connected to the battery as per the diagram, they are shown this way in the diagram just to represent the type of connection. You can possibly connect them to a 12v source that can handle the additional capacity using its existing fuse if you have such a connection available. Advanced Wiring The advanced functions of the GPS are a little more complex to install and may require you to locate the fuel pump wiring in your vehicle which will require removing of the interior trim. Note: It is very likely you will need to extend the wires on the Relay Plug Note: The wiring of the fuel pump relay will depend on your vehicle and how the fuel pump is triggered. Many vehicles are triggered by completing the ground circuit rather than supplying 12 volt. You will need to adjust the wiring to suit a ground triggered application if applicable. Again, be careful here as supplying 12 volt to a Ground circuit will cause you all sorts of problems. Fuel Cut Off o o o o Locate the fuel pump wiring in your vehicle. How the fuel pump is activated will depend on your vehicle, however this is generally simplest to tap into the wiring either at the fuel pump relay or the fuel pump itself. If you are not confident doing this wiring, please seek the assistance of an auto electrician. Yellow wire Connect the Yellow wire from the GPS Tracker plug to the Yellow wire on the Relay Plug Green wires The Green wires on the Relay Plug intercept the signal given to the fuel pump by the car when triggered by the GPS Tracker. You need to locate the fuel pump wire and cut it. Connect each side of the cut to each of the Green wires on the Relay Plug, thus creating a continuous circuit via the relay. White wire The white wire on the Relay Plug is connected to a fused 12 volt source to trigger the relay when activated by the GPS Tracker.

12 Light Descriptions The lights on the GPS Tracker communicate the current status of the device so you can establish if it is connecting to Power, GPS Satellites and Mobile Signal correctly. Note: The lights on the GPS turns off after a few minutes of no communication to save battery. Simply SMS or move the GPS to wake it up. When in this status the device is still fully functional but sleeps to reduce battery usage. 13 Basic GPS Settings The GPS unit is controlled via SMS and basically has a small mobile phone inside it. Once you have inserted the SIM Card you SMS the GPS unit from your mobile phone just as if you were SMSing a friend. Depending on the command you send, the GPS unit will translate the SMS, perform the function and send a reply to you via return SMS. Note: The SMS functions listed in this guide should be sent WITHOUT the quotation marks. We have bolded the actual command to make it more obvious. Important Note to save you on usage costs The GPS comes pre-configured with a server to send data to. We don t use this server as we leave it open to you as to which platform to use if you want to track online. By default the GPS will send a packet of data to the server each night which costs about 30c on Telstra Pre-Paid and will quickly drain your credit. To stop this happening, send the command gprson,0# to the tracker. This will turn off the GPRS (Data) connection. You can test if the data link is turned off by sending gprsset# and reading the message it returns. The Green light will be extinguished with the GPRS turned off but the device can still receive SMS messages. To turn the GPRS back on again, simply send gprson,1# to the tracker. Note: The above section was updated 3 October 2017 to use the gprson command instead of the fake APN work around which was causing issues with some recent firmware versions. Set SOS mobile number(s) You can set up to 3 SOS mobile phone numbers that the GPS unit will keep in its memory. These numbers receive notifications when certain events occur and are the only numbers that can call the GPS unit to use Listening Mode. Send an SMS with SOS,A,MobileNumber1,MobileNumber2,MobileNumber3# (Note, you don t require all 3 numbers, you could send SOS,A, # and it will set 1 number only). If successful, the GPS will reply with SOS Number X setting OK Remove SOS mobile number(s) Send an SMS with SOS,D,MobileNumber1,MobileNumber2,MobileNumber3# (Note, again, you don t require all 3 numbers, you could send SOS,D, # and it will delete this number only) If successful, the GPS will reply with SOS Number delete successfully You can also select an SOS number to delete using its position in storage (harder to remember ) Send an SMS with SOS,D,1,2,3# (Note, again, you don t require all 3 numbers, you could send SOS,A,2# and it will delete the second SOS number only) you need to know the order to use this function. If successful, the GPS will reply with SOS Number delete successfully

14 Check current SOS mobile number(s) Send an SMS with SOS# If successful, the GPS will reply with SOS Number: 1 <mobilenumber> 2 <mobilenumber> 3 <mobilenumber> Check GPS unit status Send an SMS with STATUS# If successful, the GPS will reply with all settings currently configured in the GPS. This is useful for checking the settings when you are setting up more complex features like server or app tracking. Check GPS current version Send an SMS with VERSION# If successful, the GPS will reply with the current version information of the unit. Check GPS parameters Send an SMS with PARAM# If successful, the GPS will reply with the current parameters including IMEI number, GPS data upload intervals, SOS number(s), Centre Number, Time Zone etc. Set GPS Time Zone Send an SMS with GMT,E/W,Hours,Mins# (eg GMT,E,10,0#) This example moves the time 10 hours and zero minutes from GMT in an Easterly direction. If successful, the GPS will reply with setting OK. <setting input> Restart the GPS unit If you are having problems with your GPS unit being unresponsive when it should be working, or you have not restarted it for a while, it is a good idea to restart it on a semi-regular basis. Send an SMS with RESET# The GPS unit will restart approximately 20 seconds after receiving this SMS Wait 1 minutes or so, then send a location command to check the GPS is functioning after restart.

15 Set a password for controlling the tracker It is recommended once you have configured the tracker that a password is set for the unit. This password needs to be input with every command sent, hence only doing it once you have completed setup and won t be sending as many commands to the tracker. Send an SMS with PWDSW,ON# The GPS will reply setting OK. Operation Password: ON. The password setting is now active. The default password is Send an SMS with PASSWORD,CURRENTPASSWORD,NEWPASSWORD# (eg PASSWORD,000000,1234# to set your password. o Your password can be 1-19 characters and a mix of numbers/letters but keep it simple as you have to type it in for each command sent. The GPS will reply Successfully modify service password, new password is: <password entered>. The password must be include with every command after the function (eg where,1234# or timer,1234,1800,1800# or fence,1234,on,0,0,0,1,out,1# where 1234 is the password you set.

16 Getting GPS Location GPS Coordinates & Speed Send an SMS with WHERE# The GPS will reply with an SMS containing the location of the vehicle in GPS coordinates, current speed and the time. This function is very useful to know if your car is moving at the current time. You can use it in conjunction with the next Google Maps command to firstly know the speed, and once it is stopped, check the location. GPS Google Maps Link Send an SMS with URL# The GPS will reply with an SMS containing a Google Maps link showing the current position of your vehicle. GPS Modes & Functions The GPS Tracker has two modes, Tracking mode, and Monitoring mode. When you dial the GPS unit from one of the SOS numbers, it will ring for approximately 10 seconds and then enter monitoring mode, connecting you to the microphone in the car so you can listen in! Tracking Mode This is the default mode of the GPS Tracker when it is setup and remains the default even if you activate Monitoring Mode from an SOS number. Simply send another SMS to the unit after using Monitoring Mode and it will respond as normal. Monitor Mode Monitor mode allows you to utilise the microphone function of the GPS. If you are in a situation where the car has been stolen, active the voice recorder on your mobile before calling and this will enable you to record the audio (works on most phones, but some may require an app) Call the GPS unit from a registered SOS number. It will ring for approximately 10 seconds just like a normal phone and then enter listening mode using the microphone. If the GPS continues to ring and goes to voic or disconnects, this may indicate that the number you are calling from is not a registered SOS number. Use the SOS setup commands to ensure you are registered. Note: The SIM Card in the phone calling the GPS Unit must have Called ID enables and cannot be a Private Number.

17 Geo-Fence A virtual fence can be setup around your vehicle to alert you if it is moved from a specific location. The Geo-Fence as it is called, it as circular geographic distance around where your vehicle is parked. The Geo-Fence command is a bit complex at first but it s simple once you do it a couple of times. The most complex part is the Latitude & Longitude measurements which need to be input. With your vehicle parked in the position that will be the center of the geo-fence Basic Geo-Fence command Use this command when you want to quickly set a Geo-Fence around the vehicle in its current location. Tip: Save the command to you phone so you can quickly copy and paste it if you change the location often. Send an SMS with FENCE,ON,0,0,0,1,OUT,1# Notes on the above command: o This commands sets the Geo-Fence to: ON SHAPE Circle = 0, Square = 1 LAT & LONG = Current location FENCE RADIUS = 100m FENCE TRIGGER = Out (exit the circle) FENCE ALERT-TYPE = 1 (SMS + GPRS) o By entering 0 as the coordinates in the command the GPS automatically sets them to the current Lat & Long Coordinates of the tracker. o The full format of the command is shown in the Full Geo-Fence Command section below. o The variables can be modified if required using the details in the Full Geo-Fence Command section below. If successful the GPS will reply Fence Alarm Setting OK Setting a custom Geo-Fence location (ie where the GPS Tracker isn t currently located) Send an SMS with WHERE# to the GPS. It will reply with the current location of the vehicle including the Latitude & Longitude measurements. Unfortunately these are in a Decimal Degrees configuration and we need them to be in plain Decimal format. For this example, the reply received from the GPS tracker is: Current Position! Lat: S ,Lon: E ,.. To convert this to Decimal format is as simple as adding a minus sign (-) to the S, or South, reference and removing the E from East so the conversion to Decimal would read , Note: In Australia, your coordinates will always be a combination of South and East so the conversion will always be the same when adding the minus sign. Full Geo-Fence Command o Send an SMS with FENCE,ON,0,LAT,LONG,RADIUS,IN/OUT,ALERT-TYPE# (eg FENCE,ON,0, , ,1,OUT,1#).

18 o If successful the GPS will reply Fence Alarm Setting OK o Note in the above command that the radius is set to 1. This is because it automatically multiplies it by 100 so in the above example the RADIUS is 100 meters. If you set the variable to 5 the RADIUS of the Geo-Fence circle would be 500 meters. o The IN/OUT option allows you to alarm if the vehicle goes IN the Geo-Fence zone or OUT of the Geo-Fence zone. You will generally use OUT for this. o The Alert-Type (Report Mode) can be 0 or 1 0 = GPRS only alerts (only works if you have data on) 1 = SMS + GPRS alert (this is the one we use as we don t have data enabled and it sends you an SMS if the vehicle leaves the circle Check the Geo-Fence status Check the Geo-Fence is set correctly by sending an SMS with FENCE# and it will return the status of the Geo-Fence including the Lat/Long, Radius, Status and Report Mode Remove the Geo-Fence To remove the Geo-Fence send an SMS with FENCE,OFF# SOS Alarm The GPS Tracker includes a covert SOS button that can be attached in a suitable location for the driver or passenger to activate in an emergency. In the event of an emergency, press the SOS button for approx. 5 seconds and the GPS unit will send a preset SMS message to the configured SOS numbers. Following the SMS, the GPS unit will then call each of the configured SOS numbers, looping through them up to 3 times until the call is picked up. Set the Center Number to be used with Fuel Cut off This number is configured to be the only number that can activate/deactive the fuel cut off so it must be set prior to using the Fuel or Power cut off commands Note: Only a configured SOS number can be used to set the Center Number Send an SMS with CENTER,A,MobileNumber# (eg CENTER,A, #) To remove the Center Number simply send an SMS with CENTER,D,#

19 Fuel /Power Cut Off The most advanced feature of the GPS (and most complex to install) is the fuel cut off. This function intercepts the signal to the fuel pump and stops the engine from running. It is useful if you know where the car is and are ready to recover it (possibly with the Police). Note: The function will only work at under 20km/h to prevent an accident on the highway. Note 2: You must have the Accessory wired as per the diagram as the command will only work when the Accessory is in the OFF position or when ON but under 20km/h. Send an SMS with RELAY,A# (eg RELAY,1# ) o A = 0 or 1 depending on the command you want to use o 1 = Cut off fuel (triggers relay to cut power to fuel pump) o 0 = Allow fuel (resets relay. This is the default setting)

20 GPS Tracking Advanced Functions The GPS Tracker has the ability to communicate with a server so that you can view and tracker your vehicle via an online portal. This function can be used with many different online tracking portals as they all function in essentially the same way the device sends data to the server which receives it and plots it on a map for you to see. There are many free online GPS tracking websites as well as mobile apps. They all work in the same way, where the GPS sends waypoints to the server configured and the server plots them on a map for you to view. It is up to you as to which service you prefer to use. A quick Google search will return a number of the free sites. Note: If you use this function you will require data on your PrePaid plan. If you want to use live tracking, you should test for a short period to understand how much data you are likely to use, then select a plan with a suitable data limit. We generally do not use this function for single vehicles, because although it s fun to look at it in a map, we figure if it goes missing, you can just SMS it to know where it is. Depending on the server you want to use, they will usually supply you with the APN, IP and Port settings required to connect to their server. If they do not provide these, please contact them so you can ensure you are using the correct settings on the GPS unit. Please send us an at info@jrctechnology.com.au if you wish to use our Australian hosted server. It is basic, but it is free and hosted in Australia. We will create an account for you and send you some instructions on how to connect to it and monitor your vehicle. Check Current GPRS Settings Send an SMS with GPRSSET# to the GPS If successful the GPS will reply with the current settings including APN, Server name, AGPS and URL settings Turning GPRS (data) on or off Send an SMS with GPRSON,0# (eg GPRSON,0#) The tracker will reply with setting OK. GPRSOFF MODE Options o 1 = Turn GPRS on o 0 = Turn GPRS off Setting APN The APN will differ depending on which mobile network your SIM Card is registered to and may or may not require a password. If using a Telstra SIM, the APN will default to the Telstra APN. If you need to change the APN, you can do this via SMS command. Send an SMS with APN,APNNAME# (eg APN,apn.telstra#) Note a Username and Password was not used. Most public APNs don t require these so they may not be required. o To set an APN that requires a username and password send and SMS with APN,APNNAME,USERNAME,PASSWORD# (eg. APN,apn.telstra,abc123,123456)

21 Setting the Server Name, IP & Port Send an SMS with SERVER,MODE,DOMAINNAME/IP,PORT,0# (eg SERVER,1, MODE Options o 1 = Set using domain name (eg SERVER,1, o 0 = Set using IP address (eg SERVER,0, ,8011,0#) Setting Data Upload Interval (Time) This setting is how often, based on time intervals, the GPS unit sends data to the server that you have configured. There are 2 settings, one for when the Accessory is ON and one for when the Accessory is OFF. Send an SMS with TIMER,T1,T2# (eg TIMER,30,180#) This will send data every 30 seconds when the Accessory is ON and every 1.5 minutes when Accessory is OFF. T1 = Time in seconds between 5 and 18000, to be used when Accessory is ON (default value is 10) T2 = Time in seconds between 5 and 18000, to be used when Accessory is OFF (default value is 10) Setting Data Upload Interval (Distance) This setting is how often the GPS unit, based on distance, sends data to the server that you have configured. Send an SMS with DISTANCE,D# (eg DISTANCE,500#) This will send data to the server every 500m the vehicle travels. D = Distance in meters between 50 and 10000

Ensure there is 12 volt power and a suitable ground for the GPS Tracker. Ensure that all the Advanced settings are correct for the server you are using. Contact the Server or App provided if you are still experiencing difficulty and ensure the settings in the GPS match the settings they provide to you. This is surprisingly common! Ensure your SIM card is working correctly by placing into a phone and sending a test sms to and from it. Ensure you have sufficient credit if you are using a Pre-Paid service. It is worthwhile setting a reminder to recharge your SIM card at the required interval. Specifications
