2 Joining The Welding Institute The Welding Institute is the leading professional engineering institution responsible for the professional registration and certification of welding and joining personnel worldwide. Whether you are a student, apprentice, technician, graduate or engineer, membership of The Welding Institute provides a clear demonstration of your commitment to excellence by affiliating yourself with the leading international membership body for welding and joining personnel level. Membership gives you industrial recognition by your peers and most importantly, personal and professional prestige. The Welding Institute is able to nominate and submit appropriately qualified candidates for registration as Chartered (CEng) or Incorporated Engineer (IEng), or Engineering Technician (EngTech) with the Engineering Council. The membership grades offered by The Welding Institute are Fellow (FWeldI), Member (MWeldI) Technician (TechWeldI) and Associate (AWeldI). 3 Associate (AWeldI) Associate Membership is open for everyone who has an active interest in welding and materials joining. Associate Membership also provides a springboard to those who are working towards professional membership and Engineering Council registration. Graduate applicants seeking professional registration with Engineering Council, will initially be given Associate membership combined with interim registration with Engineering Council at CEng or IEng level, where applicable.

4 Technician (TechWeldI) To apply to be a Technician member of the Welding Institute you must: Hold at least one of the following qualifications: - An approved engineering-based Advanced/Modern Apprenticeship or equivalent work based programme. - Level 3 National Certificate or Diploma in engineering or welding and joining technology. - Approved qualifications on or above level 3 in the NQCF (National Qualification and Credit Framework) - Specific programmes or qualifications approved by The Welding Institute (e.g. CSWIP Senior Welding Inspector, IIW/EWF Welding Specialist Diploma and several others). - A qualification or combination of qualifications reviewed and assessed on a case by case basis by the Membership, Education and Registration Committee. Have gained appropriate experience of a scientific or technical nature in relation to the development of welding/joining or one of the allied processes over a minimum period of two years. andidates who also wish to be considered for EngTech but do C not meet the Engineering Council requirements for qualifications ( will be required to follow the Individual Route to registration requiring a work-based assessment interview 4

5 Member (MWeldI) To apply to be a Member of the Welding Institute you must: Have a Bachelors degree in engineering, relevant science or technology. (Or already hold IEng or CEng with another Professional Institution) Have a minimum of 2 years experience in a welding, joining or other relevant discipline. Be working at a position in line with the requirements for Incorporated or Chartered Engineer. Further professional recognition can be gained by applying for registration as Incorporated or Chartered Engineer with the Engineering Council. Anyone applying for registration with Engineering Council must be a member of a Professional Institution. To become an Incorporated Engineer you need: An accredited* Bachelors or Honours degree in engineering or technology or A higher national certificate or diploma or a foundation degree, plus further learning to bachelor s level To become a Chartered Engineer you need: An accredited* Bachelors degree with honours in engineering or technology, together with an accredited or an approved master s degree or appropriate further learning to masters level or An accredited integrated MEng degree. 6 Fellow (FWeldI) To apply to be a Fellow of the Welding Institute you must normally: Have an established and enhanced reputation in the field of welding, joining or allied technologies Hold registration with Engineering Council as Chartered Engineer or have an international equivalent Have held for not less than ten years at the time of application a position of important technical or scientific responsibility in relation to development or application of welding, joining or allied technology Have made significant personal contributions to the enhancement of the welding, joining or allied technologies community Have been a Member of the Institute for at least five years. Applications for direct entry to Fellow grade are accepted at the discretion of the Membership Committee. All applications should be accompanied by references from two Fellows of the Institute or other referees of equal standing in the profession. The Membership Committee reserves the right to request further references. All applications are considered by the Membership Committee and applicants should expect to attend a Professional Review Interview conducted by two Fellows of the Institute. 6

7 Membership Benefits Membership activities contribute towards Continuing Professional Development (CPD). The Welding Institute can assist career management with career planning tools for recording Individual Professional Development (IPD) and CPD. Mycareerpath is an online professional development tool for engineers and technicians to plan, evidence and record activity that contributes towards CPD. A variety of general interest meetings, local exhibitions, training, conferences, seminars, workshops, webinars, local branch meetings and technical meetings are provided. Technical Groups cover the following technology areas - Advanced Structures, Welding Processes, Materials, Off Shore Oil and Gas, Pressure and Process Plant, Structural Integrity, Polymers and NDT and Condition Monitoring. Technical Groups offer a unique opportunity to discuss topics of mutual interest, promoting the exchange of ideas and sharing of experience. Speakers include leading researchers and engineering practitioners who offer a unique insight and perspective into their area. Members can register interest in any number of the groups. Every member is assigned to a Branch on joining. The Branch network operates globally, providing technology transfer opportunities, workshops and presentations, social events and discussion and offering support outside the work environment.
