University of Plymouth Faculty of Science and Engineering School of Engineering Programme Specification MSc Civil Engineering September 2018
1. MSc Civil Engineering Final award title: MSc Civil Engineering Level 7 Intermediate award title(s): Postgraduate Certificate (minimum of 60 credits) Postgraduate Diploma (minimum of 120 credits) UCAS code: N/A JACS code: H Awarding Institution: University of Plymouth Teaching institution(s): University of Plymouth 3. Accrediting bodies The specific content and standards of the degree programme is decided in consultation with industrial representatives and with our professional bodies through accreditation process managed by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM). The JBM comprises The Institution of Civil Engineers, The Institution of Structural Engineers and The Institute of Highway Engineers and The Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation. The programme is accredited as MSc (technical), meeting the further learning requirements for a Chartered Engineer (CEng) who has already acquired an Accredited CEng (Partial) BEng(Hons) or an Accredited IEng (Full) BEng/BSc (Hons) undergraduate first degree. See for further information and details of Further Learning programmes for CEng. 4. Distinctive Features of the Programme and the Student Experience The distinctive features of the programme include: the opportunity for appropriately-qualified student to achieve the required further learning for Chartered Engineering status the opportunity to study a civil engineering programme with a strong structural engineering content 1
deepening knowledge of geotechnical, structural and hydraulic engineering studying specialised module in advanced information technology, linked to research in structural engineering the opportunity to undertake a substantial research project on a topic of the students choosing under the supervision of academic staff invitation to attend the Engineering Research Seminars on topics related to their studies 5. Relevant QAA Subject Benchmark Group(s) The QAA Engineering Subject Benchmark statement defines the academic standard expected of graduates with an engineering degree. Master s Degree Characteristics are provided by the QAA. The defined learning outcomes were those published by the Engineering Council in the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC): "The Accreditation of Higher Education Programmes (2013)- 2nd Edition ". (NB. the 3rd Edition (2014). is now published and is likely to form the basis of the next accreditation). 2

Programme Structure Assessment % Code Title Credits Semester E1 T1 C1 P1 A1 MGMT503 International Engineering Business Management GEEN501* Advanced Geotechnical Engineering STAD505* ENBS542 Advanced Structural Engineering Project Management & Professional Practice HYFM504* Advanced Hydraulic Engineering MATH511 Advanced Engineering Analysis PRCE505* MSc Dissertation Totals 180 *Indicates a non-compensatable module. 7. Programme Aims This Masters degree offers the chance to study in greater depth particular aspects of Civil Engineering in which the graduate holds an Honours degree at Bachelors level e.g. Structures, Geotechnics and Hydraulics. It also provides an opportunity to integrate the technical and non-technical aspects of engineering and to develop a commitment to professional and social responsibility and ethical codes. This 3
experience provides a Further Learning opportunity for appropriately qualified graduate entrants seeking to complete the academic base required for Chartered Engineer status (followed by industrial training, etc.). The degree also provides a research-led postgraduate qualification of benefit to those seeking a more research-focused career. 8. Programme Intended Learning Outcomes (PLO) The MSc programme is intended to produce graduates able to extend knowledge and understanding to unique engineering problems and to lead and innovate in industry General learning outcomes (GLO) On successful completion graduates will be able to demonstrate the following four general learning outcomes. GLO1 - Knowledge and Understanding: The students will have extended their knowledge and understanding of scientific and engineering principles; particularly in the core areas of structures, geotechnics and hydraulics. Their individual projects are intended to enable the student to extend their knowledge and understanding by researching topics which often form part of the Supervisor s own research. GLO2 - Intellectual Ability: These are met by all modules which will have encouraged the student to think outside of the box particularly in the dissertation project where they may have undertaken work at the forefront of knowledge. GLO3 - Practical Skills: These will have been developed through laboratory work and the dissertation project using facilities in the Brunel laboratories. GLO4 - General Transferable Skills: These will have been developed through activities such as report writing, presentations, planning of final year projects and group working. 4
8.2. Specific Learning Outcomes (SLO) Additionally, on successful completion MSc graduates will meet the following specific learning outcomes: SLO1 - Underpinning science and mathematics, and civil engineering disciplines: A comprehensive understanding of the scientific principles of civil engineering and related disciplines; An awareness of developing technologies related to civil engineering; A comprehensive knowledge and understanding of mathematical and computer models relevant to civil engineering, and an appreciation of their limitations; An understanding of concepts from a range of areas including some outside engineering, and the ability to apply them effectively in engineering projects. SLO2 - Engineering Analysis: The ability to use fundamental knowledge to investigate new and emerging technologies in civil engineering; The ability to apply mathematical and computer-based models for solving problems in civil engineering, and the ability to assess the limitations of particular cases; The ability to extract data pertinent to an unfamiliar civil engineering problem, and apply in its solution using computer based engineering tools when appropriate. SLO3 - Design: Wide knowledge and comprehensive understanding of design processes and methodologies and the ability to apply and adapt them in unfamiliar situations; The ability to generate an innovative civil engineering design to fulfil new needs. SLO4 - Economic, social and environmental context: Extensive knowledge and understanding of management and business practices in civil engineering, and their limitations, and how these may be applied appropriately; The ability to make general evaluations of commercial risks through some understanding of the basis of such risks. SLO5 - Engineering Practice: A thorough understanding of current practice in civil engineering and its limitations, and some appreciation of likely new developments; Extensive knowledge and understanding of a wide range of engineering materials and components; 5
The ability to apply engineering techniques taking account of a range of commercial and industrial constraints. (These Learning Outcomes are based on those from the Accreditation of Higher Education Programmes UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence Second Ed. 2nd%20edition.pdf) 9. Admissions Criteria, including APCL, APEL and DAS arrangements Usually a lower second class BEng (Hons) degree (2:2) or an upper second class BSc (Hons) degree (2:1) in a civil engineering or similar engineering subject. All applicants should possess a grade C in English Language at GCSE level or a minimum score of 6.5 in IELTS. Due to some overlap with MEng modules, University of Plymouth MEng Civil Engineering graduates would not normally be accepted onto this MSc programme. For APCL, APEL see University of Plymouth Academic Regulations Accreditation of Prior Learning v Progression criteria for Final and Intermediate Awards The MSc in Civil Engineering award requires minimum of 180 credits and is categorised into grades: MSc with Distinction This award is achieved by a student gaining an overall average mark on the programme of study of 70% and above, and the mark for the dissertation/major project module is not less than 70% MSc with Merit This award is achieved by a student gaining an overall average mark on the programme of study of 60% and above, and the mark for the dissertation/major project module is not less than 60%. MSc pass This award is normally achieved by a student gaining an overall average mark between 50% and 59.95%. To pass a module requires a student to achieve at least 40% in both the exam and coursework elements and at least 50% in the overall module mark, or 50% overall if a coursework only module. 6
