The last date for entry into programmes leading to this qualification is 31 December People currently working towards this qualification should complete it rather than transfer to the replacement qualification. This qualification contains standards that replaced earlier standards. For the purposes of this qualification, people who have gained credit for the expired standards are exempt from the requirement to gain credit for the replacement standards see table below. The qualification is for people entering the wool harvesting industry with no previous experience or with limited wool harvesting industry skills. The compulsory section recognises the skills required for all new entrants to the wool harvesting industry. Qualification holders will have knowledge of wool pressing; woolshed operational requirements; wool harvesting procedures; hydration, nutrition, and sleep for physical wellbeing; and care and timeliness. They will also have the skills to assist with wool pressing; protect their own health and safety; apply listening skills; work in a team; communicate with people from other cultures; and participate in a one-to-one interview. Through strands, the qualification recognises the skills needed by the shearing and wool handling sectors of the wool harvesting industry. People pursuing careers in the shearing sector can select the Learner Shearer Strand, and those pursuing a career in wool handling in a woolshed environment can select the Learner Wool Handler Strand. People who select the Learner Shearer Strand will have the skills to grind combs and cutters; set up a machine shearing handpiece and maintain down-tube of shearing plant; machine shear sheep under supervision; and dag and crutch sheep by machine with prepared equipment. People who select the Learner Wool Handler Strand will have the skills to prepare the wool clip. This qualification is part of a series developed for the wool harvesting sector. A qualification pathways diagram can be found at the end of this document. Replacement Information This qualification, and the National Certificate in Wool Harvesting (Junior Shearer) (Level 2) [Ref: 1547] replaced the National Certificate in Wool Harvesting (Level 2) with strands in Machine Shearing Crossbred Wool, Machine Shearing Fine Wool, Blade Shearing, and Wool Handling [Ref: 1050]. Unit standards and achievement standards that are equivalent in outcome are mutually exclusive for the purpose of award. The table of mutually exclusive standards is provided on the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) website: Reviewed standards that continue to recognise the same overall outcome are registered as new versions and retain their identification number (ID). Any version of a standard with the same ID may be used to meet qualification requirements that list the ID and/or that specify the past or current classification of the standard. Changes to structure and content

Credit value of unit standard 4249 was updated from 3 to 4 credits, to reflect the latest version (version 5) of the standard. For detailed information see Review Summaries on the NZQA website. Current candidates may complete version 1, or transfer their results to version 2. Candidates intending to complete version 1 must gain unit standard before 31 December The start date for programmes or courses for version 2 is at the time of registration. The last date for entry to programmes or courses for version 1 is at the time of registration of version 2. The last date for assessments to take place for version 1 is December It is not intended that anyone be disadvantaged by this revision. However, anyone who feels they have been disadvantaged may appeal to the Agriculture Industry Training Organisation at the address below. Appeals will be considered on a case by case basis. Previous version of the qualification Following the review of the wool harvesting industry standards and qualifications in 2009, this qualification and the National Certificate in Wool Harvesting (Junior Shearer) (Level 2) [Ref: 1547] replaced the National Certificate in Wool Harvesting (Level 2) with strands in Machine Shearing Crossbred Wool, Machine Shearing Fine Wool, Blade Shearing, and Wool Handling [Ref: 1050]. There are significant differences between the expiring qualification and its replacement qualifications. The differences include: The expiring qualification [Ref: 1050] has been split into two qualifications, with qualification [Ref: 1546] designed for an entry level person who requires a broad range of skills, and qualification [Ref: 1547] designed for a junior shearer. Standards 497, 4249, 12546, 15050, 15053, and from the compulsory section have moved to the compulsory section of qualification [Ref: 1546]. Standards 3503 and have not been included in either of the new qualifications. The Machine Shearing Crossbred Wool Strand and the Machine Shearing Fine Wool Strand have both been split, with standards and moved to the Learner Shearer Strand of qualification [Ref: 1546]. Standards and 577 have been added to the Learner Shearer Strand of qualification [Ref: 1546]. The Wool Handling Strand, made up of standard 20120, has been renamed the Learner Wool Handler Strand and moved to qualification [Ref: 1546]. Standards 19145, 3501, 9677, 1304, and 1293 have been added to the compulsory section of qualification [Ref: 1546]. For detailed information see Review Summaries on the NZQA website.

People who wish to pursue a career in Wool Handling are advised to transfer to this qualification. People who wish to pursue a career in Shearing are advised to transfer to either this qualification or the National Certificate in Wool Harvesting (Junior Shearer) (Level 2) [Ref: 1547] depending on their current level of competency. The start date for programmes or courses for the new qualification is at the time of registration. The last date for entry to programmes or courses for the replaced qualification is December The last date for assessments to take place for the replaced qualification is December Other standard setting bodies whose standards are included in the qualification New Zealand Industry Training Organisation NZQA Certification This certificate will display the logos of NZQA, the Agriculture Industry Training Organisation and the organisation that has been granted consent to assess against standards that meet the requirements of the qualification (accredited). Classification This qualification is classified according to the classification system listed on the Directory of Assessment Standards (DAS) and the New Zealand Standard Classification of Education (NZSCED) system as specified below. Consent to assess requirements and the moderation system are outlined in the associated Consent and Moderation Requirements (CMR) for each standard.
