3 Introduction The purpose of this pack is to provide teachers and students with some examples of responses to GCSE German. The sample assessment materials which these responses are based on can be found on the Pearson website. In this pack, you will find a small sample of responses, an examiner commentary and the mark scheme for each question. The responses are all from students and we have retained their original responses where possible. We will add to these exemplar packs throughout the year. 22 Candidate A: Examiner comment: The candidate correctly translates isolated elements of the text such as the final sentence. There are, however, frequent errors in the first three sentences and the meaning of the original text is only partially communicated. The errors are found in both the vocabulary and the structures, and consequently the mark of 2 was awarded. 2 marks Pearson Education Ltd

23 Candidate B: Examiner comment: The second half of the text is mostly communicated. The final sentence is accurate and the difficult phrase the world s biggest model railway can be found is well translated. The first two sentences are much less accurate and there are frequent errors. The confusion between I will visit and I would recommend and between if you have children and for all of the children clearly affect the meaning. There are also errors with eine Reise wert, Hafenrundfahrt and an omission of the word world-famous. This means that the candidate would gain the top mark in the 1-3 band for the overall text as the meaning of the original text is partially communicated. 3 marks Pearson Education Ltd

24 Candidate C: Examiner comment: This translation mostly communicated the meaning of the passage. The candidate does not translate the meaning of eine Reise wert or Hafenrundfahrt but, apart from this, the meaning of the original text is clearly understandable. The second, third and fourth sentences are accurately translated and the tenses and structures are clear. This translation fits well into the 4 6 band and a mark of 5 was awarded. 5 marks Pearson Education Ltd

25 Candidate D: Examiner comment: This candidate translates the structures, tenses and vocabulary accurately. The omission of world-famous is an oversight, but it still does detract from the overall meaning. The additional mistranslation of Hafenrundfahrt means that the top mark of 7 cannot be awarded, although the candidate clearly deserves the top mark in the 4 6 band. Note that, in the live assessment, it is a requirement to write with blank ink or ball-point pen. 6 marks Pearson Education Ltd

26 Candidate E: Examiner comment: The meaning of the passage is fully communicated. There are some minor errors, such as port rather than harbour, but these do not detract from the overall effectiveness of the translation. 7 marks Pearson Education Ltd
