Unit 2 Speaking Controlled Assessment Teacher-Examiners are required to conduct and audio record the controlled assessment (speaking) Task 2A and Task 2B for each candidate at any point during the course either as formally-timetabled or as P.2
classroom-based assessments. They should also mark the two tasks (with a mark out of 30 for Task 2A and a mark out of 30 for Task 2B) for each candidate on the CM2 Form and submit the marks via Edexcel Online ( by following the steps in 3.3. The marks for Task 2A and Task 2B must be awarded for two different task types for example, a candidate must not do two Picture-based Discussions. Only sound tracks (saved in CD) for Task 2A of the sampled candidates are required to be submitted to Edexcel for moderation. Teacher-Examiners can login the Edexcel Online to view the Sample Candidates List. Please refer to the Notes for Submission of Assessed Marks via Edexcel Online and Recordings for Sampled Candidates by Sub-centres. The sampled candidates will be indicated with a tick in the Included in Sample column. If the highest and lowest marked candidates are not identified as part of the sample, you should still include them in the sample you are going to send to the HKEAA. If no ticks are shown in the Included in Sample column, that means the sample has not been selected yet. Edexcel may require to see a minimum of two different task types within the Task 2A sample. Sub-centres must ensure that a mixture of task types is included in the sample. For example, if you cover all three task types (i.e. Open Interactions / Presentations / Picture-based Discussions) within your centre, you need to submit a sample each of the three task types to Edexcel. Edexcel may also request further samples of work. The sub-centres should make sure the recordings of all the tasks are readily available for such request. Teacher-Examiners should follow the Internal Standardisation and Guidance for Marking stated in the Administrative Support Guide when doing internal standardisation and marking. 3.1 Audio Recording All sub-centres MUST audio record and mark BOTH Task 2A and Task 2B for each candidate. However, only the sound tracks for Task 2A of the sampled candidates are required to submit for moderation by Edexcel. The recordings submitted must reflect the different task-types undertaken at your sub-centre. Check that the recorder and microphone are in good working order prior to conducting the controlled assessment. Ensure that the microphone favours the candidate and that extraneous noise is kept to a minimum. At the beginning of the task, switch the recorder on, announce the candidate s name, candidate number, the task title and task type. Each test should last between 4 and 6 minutes. Tests which are too short, i.e. less than 3 minute 30 seconds, automatic deduction of 2 marks on the Content and Response grid should be applied. Tests which are too long, i.e. more than 6 minutes, stop listening and assessing at the end of the next sentence once the 6 minutes have passed. A stop-watch may be useful in controlling the examination time. The recording must not be stopped or paused during the task once the assessment has commenced. Once the task is completed, stop the recorder and check if it has been recorded. The recordings of each individual candidate must be saved in separate track. This will enable Edexcel to locate and access different records without problem. Make sure the recordings of previous candidates are not accidentally erased. If a task fails to record or is inaudible, sub-centres must ensure they have a recording of another task to submit for that candidate. Retain a back up copy of all submitted recordings. If Edexcel requests a replacement, the sub-centre has to send a further copy of the relevant assessment. The tasks should be audio recorded digitally and submitted on CD. Edexcel accepts recordings in the following formats:.mp3 (at least 192 kbit/s) P.3
.wav.wma Sub-centres must indicate clearly on the CD if it is an audio or data CD. If the tasks are recorded in a different digital format, the sub-centre should convert them to an accepted format as listed above. Please check and ensure the recordings can be heard via a CD player or a PC. The sound tracks saved in the CD should be named in the following format: Unit number_centre number_candidate name_candidate number e.g. 5CN02_12345_JoeBloggs_0012 Check points: At this point Read and audio record this Do this At the start of each new CD At the start of each candidate s task At the end of each candidate s task GCSE Examination 2018 Chinese Unit 2 Speaking 5CN02 Teacher-Examiner: James Bond Centre Name: ABC School Centre Number: Candidate Number: 0012 Candidate Name: Joe Bloggs Task Title: Cinema Programmes Task Type: Open Interaction End of test 3.2 CD Label (Appendix 2) Fill the information and list the candidates details on the CD Label. Save the task of each individual candidate in separate track. Ensure the information on CM2 Form has been completed and signed by the Teacher-Examiners AND the candidate. Start the test and observe the length. Do not stop or pause during the recording. Check if the test has been recorded clearly and audibly. Mark the scores for the candidates on the CM2 Form. The scores for Task 2A and for Task 2B of the candidate should be marked separately. Return the CD in the correct case / box before you get the next CD out of its case / box. Teacher-Examiners should list clearly candidates details of the sound tracks saved in the CD on the CD Label Form. The Form must be attached to the CD for easy reference. If more than one CD is submitted, a separate CD Label Form with relevant details should be attached. Only sound tracks for Task 2A of the sampled candidates are required for submission to Edexcel for moderation. The blank CD Label Form is available at HKEAA website. Please refer to 2.2(e). 3.3 Mark Submission by Sub-centres via Edexcel Online All the marks for the Unit 2 Speaking Controlled Assessment must be submitted accurately on Edexcel Online ( by Sub-centres on or before 2 May Edexcel will issue the username and password via to the new contact person with new address provided on the HKEAA payment record form which was submitted to the HKEAA in December 2017 in order to perform the mark submission. It is up to Edexcel s discretion to accept marks submitted after the deadline. The following link is a video clip guiding on how to submit marks online : P.4
The Notes for Submission of Assessed Marks via Edexcel Online and Recordings for Sampled Candidates by Sub-Centres will be uploaded on the HKEAA Extranet in April Teacher-Examiners need to print out a hard copy of marks submitted and sign on bottom of each mark sheet. The signed mark sheet should be sent to HKEAA together other examination materials to the HKEAA on or before 2 May Candidate Mark Sheet (CM2) (Appendix 3) Teacher-Examiners must complete the CM2 Form such as candidate name, candidate number, centre number, etc for each candidate separately. They may wish to do this in advance of the day of the controlled assessment. BOTH the Teacher-Examiners and the candidate must sign the authentication statement on the Form. Teacher-Examiners must mark Task 2A and Task 2B on the CM2 Form. At the end of the assessment, calculate the total marks and write it in the Task Total box. Ensure all marks are recorded accurately and that the arithmetic is double-checked. Ensure marks entered on the CM2 Forms tally with those submitted on EOL for the same candidate. Use of a CA2 Form must be indicated in the Y/N box. The completed CM2 Form for ALL the candidates must be submitted to Edexcel. The blank CM2 Form is available at HKEAA website. Please refer to 2.2(e). 3.5 Stimulus Material (Appendix 4) Teacher-Examiners may prepare the stimulus providing context and purpose for their candidates to take the controlled assessment related to one or more of the themes listed in the Specification. Teacher-Examiners can adapt Edexcel-produced stimuli or create their own, and have considerable control over content. They may refer to P of the Specification booklet for details. If Teacher-Examiners need reassurance on the suitability of a particular approach, topic or theme, they can consult an experienced examiner through Edexcel s Ask the Expert (TeachingLanguages@pearson.com) service. Both tasks taken by each candidate may relate to one theme or different themes but they must relate to two different task types. Although the context of the tasks may be common, Teacher-Examiners must check that there is no direct overlap of content across the formal speaking and writing assessments of the same candidate. The blank Stimulus Form Task 2A is available at HKEAA website. Please refer to 2.2(e). 3.6 CA2 Form (Appendix 5) During the tasks, candidates may access to the CA2 Form as well as the stimulus. A CA2 Form allows candidates to write up to 50 characters plus 5 pictures; OR 30 English words or pinyin plus 5 pictures; OR 30 characters plus 20 English works or pinyin plus 5 pictures. For details regarding the requirements of the CA2 Form, please refer to the Administrative Support Guide. It is not a requirement to use a CA2 Form, although candidates generally find it helpful to refer to it during the assessment. Use of a CA2 Form must be indicated in the Y/N box on the Candidate Mark Sheets Forms (CM2) and the completed CA2 Forms from all sampled candidates must be sent to Edexcel for moderation via the HKEAA. The blank CA2 Form is available at HKEAA website. Please refer to 2.2(e). P.5
4. Unit 4 Writing Controlled Assessment 4.1 Writing Works (Appendix 7) Sub-centres are required to conduct the controlled assessments for two tasks, Task 4A and Task 4B for their candidates under controlled conditions and submit the TWO writing works to Edexcel for external marking. Teacher-Examiners must not provide any help or give any task-specific feedback to candidates on their preparatory work. The controlled assessments can be undertaken at any time during the course prior to the deadline selected for the submission of candidates work. Teacher-Examiners may carry out more than two controlled writing assessments with their candidates and select the two best pieces of writing work for submission. All candidates must complete two separate writing tasks and each must be undertaken in controlled conditions in a single assessment session of no more than one hour (minimum 45 minutes). The specification states that students aiming for grade C or above will need to demonstrate extended writing skills and are expected to produce between 100 and 150 characters in each task. It is important to note that the assessment is qualitative rather than quantitative so a student is best advised writing 150 characters of good Chinese rather than 200 characters of a lower standard but all work produced within the time constrained assessment will be marked. When undertaking their assessments, candidates can refer to a bilingual dictionary (which can be online), the relevant stimulus and brief notes in CA4 Form that must accompany they submitted work. Candidates are not permitted access to online grammar or spell-checkers. Teacher-Examiners DO NOT mark the tasks or write any comment on the candidates written works. They will be externally marked by Edexcel. Candidates may word process one of their tasks or, if preferred, produce all work in handwritten characters. Sub-centres must ensure that word-processing facilities are set to character-based input thus ensuring that there is no auto-conversion from pinyin to Chinese characters and that each character is input individually. The blank Writing Work Form is available at HKEAA website. Please refer to 2.2(e). 4.2 Candidate Mark Sheet (CM4) (Appendix 8) Teacher-Examiners must complete the CM4 Form for each candidate separately. The completed CM4 Form for ALL the candidates must be submitted to Edexcel. Teacher-Examiners DO NOT mark on the CM4 Form. The candidates written work will be marked externally by Edexcel. BOTH the Teacher-Examiners and the candidate must sign the authentication statement on the form. Sub-centres may download the blank CM4 Form from the HKEAA s website for conducting the controlled assessment. 4.3 Stimulus Material (Appendix 9) It is advised that candidates are provided with a stimulus that features bullet points. Teacher-Examiners may prepare the stimulus for their candidates to take the controlled assessment related to one or more of the themes listed in the Specification. Teacher-Examiners can adapt Edexcel-produced stimuli or create their own, and have considerable control over content. They may refer to P of the Specification booklet for details. If Teacher-Examiners P.6
need reassurance on the suitability of a particular approach, topic or theme, they can consult an experienced examiner through Edexcel s Ask the Expert (TeachingLanguages@pearson.com) service. Sub-centre-devised stimuli must be refreshed at least every two years. Although the context of the tasks may be common, Teacher-Examiners must check that there is no direct overlap of content across the formal speaking and writing assessments of the same candidate. The blank Stimulus Material Form 4A / 4B is available at HKEAA website. Please refer to 2.2(e). 4.4 CA4 Form (Appendix 10) It is not a requirement to use a CA4 Form, although candidates generally find it helpful to refer to it during the assessment. Use of a CA4 Form must be indicated in the Y/N box on the Candidate Mark Sheets (CM4) Form and the completed CA4 Forms from all candidates must be sent to Edexcel for the markers reference. If used, one CA4 Form for each of the two required assessments needs to be submitted. This Form allows candidates to write up to 50 Chinese characters plus 5 pictures; OR 30 English words or pinyin plus 5 pictures; OR 30 Chinese characters plus 20 English words or pinyin plus 5 pictures. During the controlled assessments, candidates may refer to the Stimulus, CA4 Form and a bilingual dictionary. For details regarding the requirements of the CA4 Form, please refer to the Administrative Support Guide. The blank CA4 Form is available at HKEAA website. Please refer to 2.2(e). 5. Upcoming Changes Edexcel has introduced the new 9-1 grading scale (with 9 as the top grade) and new specifications for GCSE Chinese. The final examinations for the existing specifications with A*-G grading scale is May / June The first examination of GCSE Chinese in new specification with 9-1 grading scale will be offered in May / June For details of the new specification, please refer to the link: ents/specification_gcse_l1-l2_in_chinese.pdf P.7
