1 ENGINEERING, APPLIED ENGINEERING, and TECHNOLOGY The Technology Education program offers courses in the visual communications, manufacturing and construction, and transportation technology areas. Each area has introductory and advanced level courses. Classes are open to all students, grades 9 through 12. Specialty classes are also offered in the area of graphics, digital design, media production and engineering. INTRODUCTION TO VISUAL COMMUNICATIONS 1 (Elective/Semester Course) 6501 (Fundamental course for all other Visual Communications courses).5 credit This semester course is intended to give each student experience with three different areas of visual communication, Digital Photography, Screen Printing and Offset Press Printing. Each student will learn about modern digital cameras, picture manipulation in Adobe Photoshop CS3 and complete several photography assignments. Each student will design a one color t-shirt in Adobe Illustrator CS3 and print an actual t-shirt in class. Finally, each student will design a memo pad in Adobe InDesign CS3 and print it on the offset press and perform all finishing operations. If you enjoy taking pictures, designing cool shirts or running an offset press then this class is for you. This semester course is open to any student in grades This course counts for ½ Technology Credit. Prerequisites: - None 30

2 PHOTOGRAPHY AND GRAPHIC ARTS TECHNOLOGY 2 (Elective) 1 credit 6502 This year-long course is an extension of the popular Introduction to Visual Communications 1 course. This exciting course encourages creativity with projects that are challenging, rewarding and fun. Each student will learn advanced techniques in Adobe Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop. The T-shirt designs are required to be multicolor and original in design. The offset printing project is a class project and results in a professional looking publication; such as a coloring book, calendar or activity book. Digital photography is the main subject and you will do many projects using a high-end digital camera. Each student will work in a professionally equipped studio to create dynamic portraits and print them on a professional grade photo printer. All students will create a DVD portfolio of their work that is playable on any DVD player. If you wanted more time in the Intro class then this course is for you, or if you are considering a career in graphics/photography then this course is a must. This course does count for a Technology Credit. Prerequisites: - 75% or better in Introduction to Visual Communications 1 PHOTOGRAPHY AND GRAPHIC ARTS TECHNOLOGY 3 (Elective) 1 credit 6503 This year-long course is an extension of the super fun Advanced Graphics and Photography Level 2 course. This course expects a high level of creativity and a willingness to think outside the box. Projects are challenging and require more time and thought to complete. Each student will continue to learn advanced techniques in Adobe Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop. The T-shirt designs are required to be a minimum of three colors and original in design. The offset printing project is a class project that is managed by the Level 3 students. Digital photography is the main subject and you will do several projects using a high-end digital camera. Each student will work in a professionally equipped studio to create dynamic portraits and print them on a professional grade photo printer. All students will create a DVD portfolio of their work that is playable on any DVD player. This course is a must if you are considering a career in graphics/photography. 3 ADOBE PHOTOSHOP/VISUAL DESIGN ACA PREP (Elective) 1 credit 6510 This course is a yearlong, project-based experience that aims to develop career and communication skills in print production and graphic design, using the following Adobe CS6 software; Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Acrobat X. Four skill areas will be addressed: project management and collaboration, design, research and communication and print production using graphic design tools. Students will experience subject areas and skills as related to graphic design, photography, print and layout design, and production. Students will create collages and photographic compositions, logos, business cards, print ads, portfolios, brochures, newsletters, mini-yearbooks and a final portfolio. The ultimate goal is to prepare prospective students to take the Adobe Certified Associate Exam in Visual Communications using Adobe Photoshop CS6. This course is intended for students who are considering a future career in graphic design, marketing, advertising or related fields. This course does count for a Technology Credit. Prerequisites: - Complete Advanced Graphics/Photography 2 with an 80% or higher and teacher recommendation. TELEVISION and MEDIA Production (Elective) 1 credit 6504 This video based class will give students a look into live television. Classes will perform a weekly morning show that will air over the School airwaves. Students will also produce live daily announcements. Students will have the opportunity to compete in the annual TVT Awards. Prerequisites:. ADVANCED VIDEO BROADCASTING (Elective) 1 credit 6506 Students should be able to write and produce projects of exceptional quality. Students will be able to watch and engage in critical thinking based on advanced video techniques. Each student who enrolls in this course should have a great deal of self-motivation, time management skills and creativity. Students are encouraged to take on leadership roles and work together as a team to produce projects of broadcast quality. Student work will be aired on our new community access channel on Comcast and Verizon. Students will be asked to understand copyright laws and how target audience relates to the community. Prerequisites: Teacher Recommendation Grade levels: 10, 11 and 12 32

4 ADVANCED VIDEO BROADCASTING 2 (Elective) 1 credit 6508 Students will act as a producer for a television show. Students will understand their role as being in charge of the show format, content and operations. Students will also operate and program play out server and graphics operator for the message board. Students will need leadership skills to effectively produce high level television shows to air on Comcast and Verizon. Prerequistes: 90% or higher in Advanced Video Broadcasting CAD - COMPUTER ASSISTED DRAWING 1 (Elective) 1 credit 6821 A full-year course offered to 9 th, 10th, 11th and 12th grade students who have some background in drafting. This course teaches students how to use the computer as a drafting tool to meet today's demand for computer literate draftsmen and engineers. Prerequisites: - Open to grades 9 th 12 th CAD - COMPUTER ASSISTED DRAWING 2 (Elective) 1 credit 6822 This course is designed to provide students with an opportunity to pursue skills and applications in Computer Aided Drafting and Architectural Design Technologies. Areas of study will include, but are not limited to: geometric construction, orthographic projection, advanced practices in dimensioning, sectioning, auxiliary view systems, pictorial systems, architectural drawings, and computer aided drafting. This will result in the development of skills for a career in architectural planning, design, and drawing. Prerequisites: - 75% or better in CAD 1 MODERN INFRASTRUCTURE (Elective/Semester Course).5 credit 6301 This course will look at the aging infrastructure systems we rely on every day in the United States. From our Water and Sewer systems, Power Grids, Communications Systems, Bridges, Tunnels and Roadways, our world is crumbling around us. This class is intended to open student s eyes to the ailing physical world around them, and to help them understand the basic operation of these systems. Course will be equal parts lecture and activity. Students will have a chance to learn about, see and manipulate system components and to research career choices in the fields discussed. Prerequisites: - None -Teacher Recommendation 33

5 MATERIALS (Elective/Semester Course).5 credit 6610 This semester long course will explore the properties and processing of various woods, metals, and plastics as related to engineering and manufacturing. Students will learn the safe operation of tools and machines to process different materials. Operations such as injection molding, vacuum forming, resistance welding, pattern development, and various methods of metal forming will be incorporated in both individual and group projects. It is highly recommended that this course be taken prior to any advanced engineering related course. Prerequisites: - This course is highly recommended prior to taking any advanced engineering course. - Open to 9, 10, 11 & 12 th grade DRAWING & DESIGN (Elective/Semester Course).5 credit 6800 Drawing & Design is a high school level course that is appropriate for 9th thru 12th grade students who are interested in design and engineering. The major focus of the course is to expose students to the design process, communication methods, engineering standards, technical documentation, and mechanical drafting through the use of 3- Dimensional software. Drawing & Design gives students the opportunity to develop skills and understanding of course concepts through activity-, project-, and problem-based (APPB) learning. Used in combination with a teaming approach, APPB-learning challenges students to continually hone their interpersonal skills, creative abilities and understanding of the design process. It also allows students to develop strategies to enable and direct their own learning, which is the ultimate goal of education. This course assumes no previous knowledge, but students should be considering the advancement of their knowledge through the Engineering Academy or Certificate Program. Students will employ engineering and scientific concepts in the solution of engineering design problems. Students will also learn how to document their work, and communicate their solutions to their peers and members of the professional community. Prerequisites: - This course is highly recommended prior to taking any advanced engineering course. Open to 9, 10, 11, & 12 th grade Teacher Recommendation PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT (Elective) 1 credit 6605 The Products Development course for the Applied Engineering and Technology Department seeks to educate a new generation of versatile innovators by integrating entrepreneurship, creativity, design, prototyping, manufacturing, and systems with new, leading-edge techniques, and technologies, and processes for design, manufacturing, and product development. It allows students to apply skills, techniques, and technological abilities learned in previous courses to design and develop a project, either individually or in a group setting. Prerequisites: - It is recommended that students have completed Drawing and Design, or CAD 1, and Materials and Mass Production in order to be adequately prepared for this course. 34

6 APPLIED ENGINEERING (Elective) 1 credit 6302 Applied Engineering will be a course where students can look back and be proud of what they have accomplished with their hands. Coursework will be based upon current trends in the industrial world with a focus on transportation. Successful students will be able to work through a problem, design a solution and build the answer. Students will be exposed to many different industrial technologies such as cutting, welding, bending, threading, shearing and soldering, all with a strong emphasis on industrial safety. Students will also learn about and integrate current technologies into their projects. Prerequisites: - It is highly recommended that students take Drawing and Design and Materials prior to enrolling in this course. - Grades 10, 11, & 12 only CONSTRUCTION SYSTEMS (Elective/Semester Course).5 credit 6601 This semester long course provides students with a broad analysis of the organization and structure of the residential construction industry and the many career choices the industry offers. Students will study the current construction methods and materials used for various types of residential structures. This course also introduces site development and preparation, job layout, and materials and methods for frame and masonry construction. The curriculum also emphasizes job site safety, practical working knowledge of tools and equipment use, an introduction to blueprints, and an overview of industry math. This course is highly recommended for students interested in careers related to Residential Construction and Construction Management, Civil Engineering, and Architecture. Prerequisites: - It is highly recommended that students take Drawing and Design and Materials prior to enrolling in this course. - Grades 10, 11, & 12 only ROBOTICS (Elective) 1 credit 6813 This year long course will introduce students to the design, construction, and programming of robotic systems. Students will acquire a basic understanding of the many types, operation, programming, and applications of robots in manufacturing and entertainment. Team work and problem solving will be emphasized throughout the course. Students will also have the opportunity to compete in various robotic competitions. Prerequisites: Open to grades 10, 11, &12 Teacher Recommendation 35

7 MASS PRODUCTION (Elective) 1 credit 6602 This course will be a natural progression of the Materials and Applied Engineering courses. Students will build on the knowledge developed in Materials and Applied Engineering to explore and experience modern production methods. Students will develop Jigs, Fixtures, and plan production methods to successfully mass produce a product. Students will work and collaborate in a controlled group setting, using CNC systems, Lab machinery, design skills, and various materials. This course is required in year two of the Engineering Academy. Prerequisites: - Successful completion of Materials or Applied Engineering -Teacher Recommendation -Grades only CIVIL ENGINEERING and ARCHITECTURE (College in the High School/Elective) 1 credit 6802 Civil Engineering and Architecture (CEA) is a yearlong course that focuses on the study of design and construction of residential and commercial building projects. It is one of the four specialized courses in Project Lead the Way, a pre-engineering program. This course requires students to work in design teams, to exhibit communication skills, to work within engineering standards, and to provide technical documentation. CEA is a course for those students interested in careers related to civil engineering and architecture. The course applies and develops secondary level knowledge and skills in mathematics, science, and technology with hands-on practices and applications. CEA assumes no prior knowledge however; this course requires rigorous mathematical thinking along with practical application. As such, students should be enrolled in concurrent college preparatory mathematics and science courses. Prerequisites: - It is highly recommended that students take Drawing and Design prior to enrolling in this course. - Open to grades 10, 11, & 12 36

8 INTRODUCTION TO ENGINEERING DESIGN (College in the High School/Elective) 1 credit 6811 Introduction to Engineering Design is an introductory course, which develops student problem solving skills, with emphasis placed upon the concept of developing a 3-D model or solid rendering of an object. Students focus on the application of visualization processes and tools provided by modern, state of the art computer hardware and software called Inventor. This modern computer-based process replaces the traditional hand drawing methods. The course will emphasize the design development process of a product and how a model of that product is produced, analyzed and evaluated using a Computer Aided Design System. Various design applications will be explored with discussion of possible career opportunities. Students may select to receive transcript college credits from Rochester Institute of Technology. Prerequisites: - Completed an Algebra 1 course (not Cognitive Algebra 1) - Highly recommended students complete Drawing & Design - Grades 10, 11, 12: Students should be enrolled in Algebra 2 or have completed Algebra 2. - Grade 9 Students should be enrolled in Algebra 2 and will need teacher recommendation from middle school math or science teacher and a Gateway to Technology teacher. PRINCIPLES OF ENGINEERING (College in the High School/Elective) 1 credit 6801 Principles of Engineering is a broad-based survey course designed to help students understand the field of engineering and engineering technology and its career possibilities. Students will develop engineering problem solving skills that are involved in post-secondary education programs and engineering careers. They will explore various engineering systems and manufacturing processes. They will also learn how engineers address concerns about the social and political consequences of technological change. The main purpose of this course is to experience through theory and hands-on problem-solving activities what engineering is all about and to answer the question, Is a career in engineering or engineering technology for me? Students may elect to receive transcript college credits from Rochester Institute of Technology. Prerequisites: - Students will have completed IED (Introduction to Engineering Design) with a 70% or higher. - Students will have completed Algebra 2 with a 70% or higher th & 12 th grade only 37

9 COMPUTER INTEGRATED MANUFACTURING (College in the High School/Elective) 1 credit 6611 Computer Integrated Manufacturing is a Project Lead the Way course that applies principles of robotics and automation. The course builds on computer solid modeling skills developed in Introduction to Engineering Design. Students use CNC equipment to produce actual models of their three-dimensional designs. Fundamental concepts of robotics used in automated manufacturing, and design analysis are included. This course is offered to 10 th, 11 th and 12 th grade students. Students may elect to receive transcript college credits from Rochester Institute of Technology. Prerequisites: - 75% or better in Introduction to Engineering Design & Principles of Engineering DIGITAL ELECTRONICS (College in the High School/Elective) 1 credit 6612 Digital Electronics is a Project Lead the Way course in applied logic that encompasses the application of electronic circuits and devices. Computer simulation software is used to design and test digital circuitry prior to the actual construction of circuits and devices. This course introduces students to the scope, rigor and discipline of engineering and engineering technology prior to entering college. This course is open to 11 th and 12 th grade students. Students may elect to receive transcript college credits from Rochester Institute of Technology. Prerequisites: - 75 % or better in Principles of Engineering and Algebra or Geometry ENGINEERING DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT (Elective) 1 credit 6815 In this course, students will work in teams of two and four to design and construct the solution to an engineering problem, applying the principles developed in the preceding four courses. The problem may be selected from a database of engineering problems, be a recognized national challenge or be an original engineering problem identified by the team and approved by the teacher. The problems will involve a wide range of engineering applications (e.g. a school robo-mascot, automated solar water heater, remote control hover craft). Students will maintain a journal as part of a portfolio of their work. Each team will be responsible for delivering progress reports and making final presentations of their project for an outside review panel. The completed portfolio will be invaluable as students apply to college. Prerequisites: - Completion of at least three PLTW courses with an 80% or higher (IED, POE, CIM, DE). - Concurrent enrollment in college preparatory mathematics. 38
