COURSE DESCRIPTION COMPUTER REPAIR IV This course prepares students for jobs as network technicians and helps them develop additional skills required for computer technicians and help desk technicians. It provides a basic overview of routing and remote access, addressing, and security. It also familiarizes students with servers that provide services, web space, and authenticated access. Students learn about the soft skills required for help desk and customer service positions, and the final chapter helps them prepare for the CCENT certification exam. Network monitoring and basic troubleshooting skills are taught in context. II. COURSE OBJECTIVES/OUTLINE A. The Internet and Its Uses Describe how the Internet is evolving and the various ways that businesses are using the Internet. (S B3, S B6) Describe the importance of standards in the continuing growth of the Internet. (S B1) Describe the purpose of an ISP and the services that it offers.. (S B2) Describe the hierarchical structure of the Internet and the purpose of the Point of Presence (POP) and the Internet Exchange Point (IXP). (S B1) Identify the types of devices used by the ISP to provide services and describe the importance of scalability in the ISP network. (S B2, S B6) Describe the various network support teams that work at an ISP and the roles and responsibilities of each one. (S B2) B. Help Desk Describe the various roles of help desk and installation technicians. (S B1, S B2, S B6) Describe the seven layers of the OSI model and how the OSI model is used in troubleshooting network issues. (S B1, S B2, Identify common tools and diagnostic procedures of help desk technicians. (S B1, S B2, S B6) Describe onsite procedures to resolve issues. (S B2) C. Planning a Network Upgrade Perform a customer site survey. (S B6, S B2, S B10, S B5) Describe the importance of planning when beginning a network upgrade. (S B2, S C3) Describe physical topology considerations when upgrading a network. (S B4) Describe structured cabling. (S B1, S C2)

Planning the Addressing Structure Describe how IP Addressing is implemented in the LAN. (S B2) Subnet a given network to allow for efficient use of IP address space.. (S B10, S B5) Explain how Network Address Translation (NAT) and Port Address Translation (PAT) are used in a network. (S B3, S A1, S A2) E. Configuring Network Devices Configure a router with an initial configuration. (S B1, S B2) Use Cisco SDM to configure a Cisco ISR with LAN connectivity, Internet connectivity and NAT. (S B1) Configure a Cisco router for LAN connectivity, Internet connectivity and NAT using the Cisco IOS CLI. (S B1, S A2, A3, S B1, B2) Configure a WAN connection from customer premises to an ISP. (S B2) Describe setup and configure a standalone LAN switch. (S B1) F. Routing Describe the purpose and function of dynamic routing and the protocols used to implement it. (S B1) Configure RIPv2 dynamic routing using the Cisco IOS. (S B1) Describe the use of exterior routing protocols across the Internet. (S B1, S B2) Enable BGP on a customer site router. (S B6) G. ISP Services Describe the network services provided by an ISP. (S B1) Describe the protocols that support the network services provided by an ISP. (S B1, S B2) Describe the purpose, function, and hierarchical nature of the Domain Name System (DNS). (S B9, B10, B11, B12, S B5) Describe and enable common services and their protocols. (S B1, S B2) H. ISP Responsibility Describe ISP security policies and procedures. (S B1) Describe the tools used in implementing security at the ISP. 4 Describe the responsibilities of the ISP with regard to maintenance and recovery(s b1) I Preparing for Certification Use the OSI model as a framework for troubleshooting network problems(s b2) Identify and correct problems with hardware and operation at Layer 1 and Layer 2. 5 V. INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES Various teaching methods are used in this course. Instruction will be given using prepared worksheets, class notes, instructional videos, and exercises given from the book. Classroom demonstrations and hands-on lab activities will be included. Group activities and cooperative learning may be used. In addition, the Internet may be used for research and downloading device drivers. Moreover, the students will engage in interactive simulation and games to test their knowledge on the material. VI.
