2 Information Centric Networking (ICN) Information Centric Networking (ICN) has been under intense research for several years ICN would offer several advantages compared to the current -based Internet: Better suited for the modern communication paradigm which is more about information than specific devices Easy multicast and in-network caching to improve scalability and efficiency without using CDNs Easier mobility support Better protection against denial-of-service attacks and SPAM Perfect match for the future Internet-of-Things (IoT) world Beijing POINT 2
3 Information Centric Networking (ICN) ICN has been researched in several research projects: PSIRP and PURSUIT are European projects that designed and implemented an ICN-based clean-slate architecture CCN and NDN are well known American ICN projects However, the deployment of and transition to ICN is a big challenge: v6 deployment has been very slow (despite the shortage of v4 addresses) and it is only an incremental upgrade Transition to a new network architecture is a slower and much more difficult process Content delivery networks (CDNs) decrease the immediate need for ICN Several migration strategies have been proposed, like running ICN as overlay over the current networks Beijing POINT 3
4 POINT Approach Instead of doing ICN over, the POINT project aims to run over ICN! Hypothesis: current -based services can run better over an ICN core network No need to change existing end-user devices and applications Using ICN within the core allows to use efficient caching and multicast To test this hypothesis, a prototype will be built, tested and finally evaluated in a production network POINT is funded by the EU Horizon 2020 program and it builds on prior EU projects (PSIRP, PURSUIT) Based on the clean-slate Blackadder prototype, that uses Bloom-filter-based forwarding Beijing POINT 4
5 POINT ICN Architecture POINT is based on the work done in PSIRP and PURSUIT projects Everything is information, which is published and subscribed to Rendezvous system matches interests between the publisher and subscriber Topology Manager manages the internal topology of the operator s network Forwarding is done using Bloom filters, which denote the network path Network Attachment Point (NAP) converts between and ICN using various abstractions (, HTTP, TCP, CoAP) implemented by protocol handlers Beijing POINT 5
6 POINT Architecture The POINT platform can run unmodified Internet applications on an ICN Core Network We are running our Bloom-filter-based multicast on standard SDN infrastructure Applications Abstractions: HTTP,, CoAP, TCP ICN Core Network SDN infrastructure Beijing POINT 6

8 POINT Testbed and Evaluation POINT has a project-wide testbed running over OpenVPN and L2 connections Our testbed has been connected to the Starlight testbed (USA) Later, a field trial will be conducted in Primetel s live network in Cyprus Real users will be able to access TV and other services over the ICN core network Allows us to accurately measure the benefits of ICN in a real environment Co-operation with other European activities, such as Bristol is Open Beijing POINT 8
