CCN/NDN implementation by network softwarization September 21 st, 2015 Toshitaka Tsuda Waseda University
Background consideration of our approach The 5G core network will be the foundation of the future network It should provide the functions and performance that the 5G mobile system requires. It should smoothly evolve to the future network. Variety of requirements will be raised to the future network, reflecting on the change of society. Therefore Network flexibility is the key. CCN/NDN will be one of the promising network paradigm for the future network.
Network related social change Video contents became the major network traffic, and continues to grow. Advancement of Cyber/Physical converged society (IoT, Big data processing) 5G mobile communication system is the reality. Network is expected as an important infrastructure to realize disaster tolerant resilient Need new network structure!
Related ICT R&D direction in Japan Network flexibility Software defined network(new Generation Network) Flexible Management(SON, Heterogeneous Network) Flexible photonic Network(Path/Packet switching Network) Context aware service provisioning (Human Centric/User centric Network) CCN/NDN
About CCN/NDN New network paradigm proposed by PARC Contents name based access rather than server name Based on the use of two kind of packet; Interest packet for request and Data packet for delivery Node provides with three basic functions - PIT(Pending Interest Table): Keep Interest information, aggregate the same contents request - Cache: Cache contents that go through the node, and serve the request when the requested content is cached - FIB(Forward Information Base): Transfer Interest packet to the appropriate direction when the content is not cached in the node
Expected merits from NDN 1. Reduction of telecom traffic and contents server load. 2. Quick response is expected. 3. Having cache is also useful to provide with DTN(Delay Tolerant Network) like services. 4. Multi-path routing capability makes the network robust. These features are also effective for disaster situation.
Contents access in IP Media server 5 Congestion 4 3 Users 1 2
Contents access in CCN/NDN Media server Users 1 2
NDN related activities in Waseda Several laboratories have related activities Awarded some national project funds - Europe-Japan joint project Energy efficient contents delivery by ICN - MIC advanced application project Proactive contents caching for commuter train users - NICT project Social Big Data NDN testbed installed Established ICN consortium in Japan
Our approaches Establishing an NDN network environment Algorism developments for 3 functional blocks Service oriented approach - Service installation that will enjoy NDN nature Enrichment of basic communication service Integration of IoT and Big data processing oriented features - Edge area processing, In Network Data Processing
Contents service for train users - Service installation example Place NDN node at each train stations Place NDN node in a train(moving NDN node) Smart scheduler dispatches chunks based on a time table Off loading Proactive contents caching Send contents to each station Transfer contents when a train arrives Service provisioning by WiFi Use a train node as DTN node Cloud system Content servers CCN backbone Transportation system Interest Data Interest Data Data Interest Interest command Users CCN backbone Data Data Congestion or Disaster Interest command train command Stations Interest Data Congested / Disaster Area Non-congested / Safe Area
Rational In Japan, many people are spending time viewing contents on trains. Wireless communication environment is unstable and the capacity is limited. Then the contents quality is not good enough. At large stations, telecom traffic is too congested to deal with. On board WiFi service is started in some trains. NDN cache can provide solution for this situation.
Railway experiments Measurements: Time for stopping, time for moving, through put Stopping and moving Through put distribution Through put and RSSI Through put map 13
Communication protocol IP/NDN hybrid: Session control on IP NDN native: Every thing on NDN IP/NDN hybrid Train Info DB Smart Scheduler IP Backbone Content Servers NDN native Train Info DB Content Servers CCN Backbone CCN Backbone Stations Stations Users Smart Scheduler Users
NDN new directions we are interested in More basic communication functions In network service provisioning by name NFN(Named Function Networking), SCN(Service Centric Networking) In network processing architecture for IoT and Big Data including Edge computing/ Local Area Computing Inter slice collaboration
Intended expansion of NDN functions In network Data Processing F T P S M T P H T T P S N M P NDN M P E G TCP UDP RSVP.. Communication Applications IP suite IP ATM PPP/HDLC Ether Optical Wireless Coaxial Twisted pair...
Future network Sensor network New node Edge area processing Service provision Virtual network NDN slice Collab. IP slice Physical network IP/NDN Hybrid service(proactive contents caching) Edge processing on NDN(Social Big Data)
Summary Presented an NDN application activity of Waseda University in a real field Introduced our current research directions on related to NDN These direction requires more functionality added. Therefore, deep network programmability is essential.
