Operational Management of Lightpaths Ronald van der Pol
Outline SURFnet6 hybrid network NetherLight Optical Exchange Point GLIF (global Lambda Integrated Facility) lightpath planning tool lightpath monitoring lightpath management open issues
SURFnet6 hybrid network IP routed & lightpaths over 7000 km dark fiber cross border fibers Hamburg Muenster Aachen over 200 lightpaths
NetherLight in Amsterdam

GLIF (Global Lambda Integrated Facility)
Lightpath Planning Tool SURFnet6 operational since 2006 We soon realized manual lightpath planning was difficult No standard software available The big telcos all have their own proprietary software Planning Tool developed to find paths in SURFnet6 Topology + configured lightpaths > graph Data is retrieved from the network with the TL1 Toolkit Data is stored in a MySQL database Topology information stored in NDL format Constraint based shortest path > Dijkstra algorithm Currently 600 lines of Perl code
Path Finding Complexity
TL1 Toolkit Optical equipment uses TL1 as CLI TL1 has difficult to read syntax TL1 Toolkit is a Perl module for TL1 scripts hides difficult TL1 syntax from user takes care of connecting, logging in and logging out has functions for frequently used tasks presents output as Perl data structures to the user device independent (Nortel, Cisco, Adva,...) 1200 lines of Perl code Apache 2.0 license Toolkit
Network Description Language Framework to describe network topologies Developed by the University of Amsterdam SURFnet6 NDL file automatically generated TL1 Toolkit retrieves SDH section trace information section traces contain neighbour information SURFnet6 NDL file has more than 12,000 lines RDF based (semantic web) SPARQL is used for SQL like queries

Lightpath Monitoring Vendor NMS monitoring looks at individual devices We also need status of services (lightpaths) No existing software (2005/2006) We wrote our own (initially Perl based, now Java based) Lightpath topology and interface status information stored in a MySQL database SPOTLIGHT web based monitoring SARA's ARA Planning and monitoring Tool for LIGHTpaths LIGHT Apache Tomcat based uses servlets and Java Service Pages presents database information via web pages NetherLight > SURFnet6 >
Lightpath Status Overview
Lightpath Information
Device Timeslot Usage
Interface Lightpath Information
Open Issues Lightpath setup takes a lot of coordination between domains Each domain sees part of the total lightpath no end to end monitoring yet fiber cuts cause alarms in all domains who should contact the end users? who are the end users? Who should be informed about planned work or outages? all domains and end users will see the outage currently all information is broadcast to everyone Which lightpath are we talking about? we need global identifiers for lightpaths
Current activities perfsonar for interdomain lightpath monitoring GLIF is working on Global Identifiers GLIF is working on operational procedures GLIF is working on common SLA definitions
perfsonar Each domain installs one or more Measurement Points MP presents lightpath information via web services MP contains topology and link status information Collector combines information from all MPs and presents an end to end view of lightpaths perfsonar used for passive link status information active performance measurements But perfsonar currently needs manual configuration this does not scale! this will not work for dynamic lightpaths!
perfsonar Example
