80 Web basics The World Wide Web was created in order to solve the following problems: -Wanted a way to point to resources on other computers -Wanted an user friendly interface -Wanted flexibility in how to point to resources Gopher, released in the same year as WWW, solved the first two issues, but not the third. -Used hypertext -Used a user friendly interface -Hierarchical folder-like system Web pages became both the pointer to resources and the resource itself.

89 Major changes in 1991 NSFnet lets commercial traffic on its backbone World Wide Web released Congress passes the Gore Bill-financed lots of research and network capacity expansion Total traffic exceeds 1 trillion bytes, or 10 billion packets per month! Over 100 countries connected with over 600,000 hosts and nearly 5,000 separate networks.
