3 QoSMOS concept Provide QoS and mobility while obeying regulations and ensuring incumbent protection 2 cognitive managers working on different timescales: Lower cognitive manager is centralised and works on longer timescale to build portfolio of available resources Upper cognitive manager is distributed and allocates spectrum to individual wireless links on a shorter timescale.
4 QoSMOS reference model and project structure One Project workpackage defines the system architecture while other workpackages are focused on specific blocks Adaptation layer allows for transparent communications between different blocks. Additional workpackages focus on: Define scenarios and look at business cases Proof-of-concepts Management & project exploitation
5 QoSMOS scenarios Three main scenarios identified within QoSMOS: Cellular extension Cognitive femtocell Cognitive ad-hoc network
6 Cellular extension scenario WS in addition to licensed spectrum Range up to 1 or 2 km Increased coverage Increased capacity (offloading)
7 Rural broadband scenario Special case of cellular extension fixed and long range Range up to 10 km Used for broadband not-spots where fixed line alternatives are too costly
8 Cognitive femtocell scenario Indoor, Outdoor and indoor-tooutdoor deployments Compared to 3G/LTE Better interference control leading to improved capacity and coverage Potentially more spectrum available
9 Cognitive ad-hoc network scenario Highly dynamic Typically limited in time and space Examples include emergency scenarios, temporary/quick network deployments and some forms of machine-tomachine.
10 Spectrum micro-trading This is the ability to buy and sell spectrum on a smaller scale than is currently possible Can be seen as an addition/alternative to white space or a way of implementing white space allocation. Several dimensions to micro trading include space, time and frequency

15 Simulation Study Carried out to assess performance and viability of a spectrum market using the spectrum micro-trading pixelation model. Scenario was for several mobile operators that use micro-traded spectrum in addition to their permanent spectrum allocations. Each mobile operator has a fitness function based on how well it is satisfying its user demand and how much money it is spending on spectrum. Q-Learning heuristic allows the mobile operator to adjust its bidding behaviour. Quantized bid-proportional auction used. Further details of the simulation setup can be seen in QoSMOS public deliverable D1.5
16 Simulation Results Spectrum allocation efficiency results show the benefit of the micro-frequency dimension. Spectrum block size is 8Mhz (red), 4MHz (green), 2MHz (blue) and 1MHz (magenta) Further results from the market viability study for spectrum microtrading can be seen in QoSMOS public deliverable D1.5
