1 XRS Media Adapters Nokia XRS Media Adapters (XMAs) provide cost-efficient Gigabit (GE), 10GE, 40GE and 100GE interface options for the 7950 XRS family, that support the full range of functional requirements for IP routing, Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS), Internet peering, infrastructure services and IP/optical integration. 36/72-port GE SFP/CSFP Compact XMA All XMA variants are powered by the FP3 400G network processor, which provides the ideal geometry for 10GE, 40GE, and 100GE port configurations. Two XMA form factors are currently available to offer granular scaling options: 200G (full duplex) Compact XRS Media Adapters (C-XMAs) and 400G (full duplex) XRS Media Adapters (XMAs). The entire range of C-XMAs and XMAs variants can be equipped in any platform of the 7950 XRS family. A flexible software licensing scheme allows for customizing the XMAs for diverse core router tasks such as P routing, Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) peering, MPLS switching, and Layer 2/Layer 3 virtual private network (VPN) infrastructure services, with configurable quality of service (QoS) granularity. 2 The XMA forwarding complex consists of FP3 P- and Q-chips that perform typical functions such as packet lookups, traffic classification, processing and forwarding, service enablement and QoS. Each XMA also provides specific interface ports, physical media and optical functions. XMAs are equipped in an XRS Control Module (XCM), which contains a slot-level control plane subsystem with a dedicated multicore CPU and 4G DDR3 memory, and the fabric interface based on two FP3 T-chips to interconnect to the system switching fabric modules. XCMs for the XRS-20, XRS-20e and XRS-40 provide 800 Gb/s (full duplex) switch tap fabric capacity, and can host two XMAs or two C-XMAs. An XRS-40 is comprised of either two XRS-20 shelves or two XRS-20e shelves in a back-to-back configuration. The XMA-XCM concept (Table 1) is a unique concept that debuts in the Nokia 7950 XRS platform. It provides an additional level of modularity and investment protection by decoupling the forwarding logic from control and switching logic. It enables network operators to mix 400 Gb/s XMAs and 200 Gb/s C-XMAs in a single chassis, the flexibility to upgrade to higher system slot capacity in the future without having to replace existing XMAs, and a cost-efficient option to pre-equip XMAs, but only powering those that are providing services. Distributing certain control plane capabilities on the XCMs also improves control plane scalability and in-service hardware upgrade performance. Figure 1. 3 Features and benefits Optimize capacity and flexibility Traditional core routers deploy custom ASICs that optimize forwarding capacity and port density, but lack flexibility and versatility. The Nokia 7950 XRS breaks with this tradition and is the first core router that is based on programmable network processing silicon the Nokia FP3 chipset. As a result, the XRS platform combines tremendous forwarding performance with unprecedented hardware flexibility. Where alternative core routers have to resort to multiple line card variants to cover the spectrum of core routing needs, the 7950 XRS can bring it all on one platform with common hardware and excellent investment protection. Line card licenses allow for tailoring and tuning the 7950 XRS system to customers evolving needs. MPLS, IP core routing, advanced BGP peering, VPN service, virtual private LAN service (VPLS), and advanced QoS capabilities can be unlocked through a simple license upgrade, without hardware changes or maintenance windows. Whether deployed in the metro core, in the IP backbone, or Internet peering points, the 7950 XRS will meet your networking needs. Performance and resource efficiency With 288 packet processor cores and separate traffic management, the FP3 chipset offers deterministic packet forwarding performance under full load, even when complex packet lookup and advanced traffic management operations are required. The 400G FP3 chipset and C-XMA/XMA line card designs have an optimal geometry for 10, 40 and 100GE interface at full rate, and made the 7950 XRS the world s first core router supporting 400 Gb/s clear channel interfaces. Smart, 400G silicon helps to reduce the number of hardware components. C-XMA modules offer 20 x 10GE or 2 x 100GE interfaces using only a single FP3 chipset, and a single memory complex that is shared across all interface ports. XMA modules share two FP3 complexes to double port and slot capacity and are able to drive a single 400G full duplex clear channel port. Conversely, competing line card designs typically replicate memory for each 100G or 200G forwarding complex in separate hardware slices, demonstrate choppy forwarding performance with limited traffic management, and are unable to support 400G clear channel interfaces. Innovation to rely on While the Nokia 7950 XRS is a new and highly innovative platform, it leverages field-proven and time-tested technology. The FP3 network processor silicon that powers the 7950 XRS interface cards also drives the line cards of the flagship Nokia 7750 Service Router (SR) platform. Currently in its third generation, FP routing silicon has evolved in a mature and fieldproven technology. The FP3 chipset enables the 7950 XRS to run the same Nokia Service Router Operating System (SR OS) binaries used in the flagship 7750 Service Routing family, and leverage over a decade of software innovation, field validation and maintenance. Groundbreaking reliability features such as non-stop routing and services were first introduced in SR OS and set new industry standards on availability.
