Next Generation Emergency Communication Systems via Software Defined Networks Aamir A. Khan Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering Missouri University of Science and Technology 27 April Aamir Khan
Introduction Overview Outline Network Virtualization using SDN Evolution of ECS Architecture of ECS using ECS ECS using SDN Implementation Documentation Implementation Interface Conclusion Future Work References and Future Reading 28 April 2017 Presentation Overview 2
Introduction Emergency Communication System(ECS) should be fast and Reliable Significant Fatalities occur in first few hours of disaster First 72 hours after disaster is most critical period Disaster Situation have exposed existing ECS limitations September 11, Tsunami in Asia-Pacific (2004), Hurricane Katrina(2005) 28 April 2017 Presentation Overview 3
Introduction 3 Main issues in the existing ECS: Lack of Capacity Incompatible systems User Operability Internet based solutions does not provide dedicated bandwidth or priority based communications Capacity can be overloaded due to downloads, backups, gaming etc. Can experience loss of QoS 28 April 2017 Presentation Overview 4
Introduction Framework for ECS using network virtualization via Software Defined Networks. Separates Control plane and Physical infrastructure Enable control changes made at software level Dynamic bandwidth allocation Priority based packet forwarding Service isolation achieved using VLANs Ensures QoS even at disaster times 28 April 2017 Presentation Overview 5
Introduction [Ref: {1}] Decoupling Control plane from Data Plane Allows flexible control 28 April 2017 Presentation Overview 6
Network Virtulization via SDN Sofware Defined Networks(SDN) decouples Control plane from Data plane Thus switches become packet forwarding devices Communication b/w Data plane and Control Plane is handled through Control Data Plane Interface (CDPI) First and still used CDPI is OpenFlow Makes network programmable and provides centralized control 28 April 2017 Presentation Overview 7
Network Vertulization via SDN 1. Isolation of Service Services reside in their own virtual channels Private network for service providers Flow and protocol can be updates w/o interference from other applications 2. Control QoS and Optimized Traffic Flow Improved QoS, high BW in dedicated channel Done via Flowvisor in OpenFlow 3. Scalability New services and users can be added w/o hassel 28 April 2017 Presentation Overview 8
Evolution of ECS Dial tone and Direct Dial Service in 1950s 911 in 1968 Federal Communications Committee(FCC) announced Enhanced 911(E911) Wireless Communication and Public Safety Act of 1999 included E911 services for non landline phones Location Tracking using Automatic Location Information(ALI) database by signal carriers ECS moving towards providing SMS, Reverse 911 etc. 28 April 2017 Presentation Overview 9
Architecture of ECS using SDN Framework consists of Service providers, Users and the Network End-to-End service is encapsulated using virtual channels SDN used for dynamic, priority based packet switching Virtual LANs used to achieve isolation of services 28 April 2017 Presentation Overview 10
Architecture of ECS using SDN 1. Network Each Service given its own channel, facilitates isolation Uses OpenFlow for packet forwarding rules Results in additional virtual channel b/w provider and user 28 April 2017 Presentation Overview 11
Architecture of ECS using SDN 2. User End Virtual Machines for virtualization, controlled by Hypervisor Enables developer to choose OS for applications Each application managed independent of the other 28 April 2017 Presentation Overview 12
Architecture of ECS using SDN 3. Provider End Handled similar to User End Allows multi servers to be hosted on a single physical server Service Manager controls what needs to be displayed Service Service communicates the content 28 April 2017 Presentation Overview 13
Architecture of ECS using SDN Overall Architecture Joe Miner User End: Comprised of Home Devices Provider End: Comprised of Service Managers and Servers Management end: Consists of its own managers and servers 28 April 2017 Presentation Overview 14
ECS using SDN Implementation 4 services implemented at University of Idaho Management Service Weather Alert Service (WAS) Alternative 911 Service (A911) Emergency Calling Emergency Alert Service (EAS) Management Service controlled Hypervisor WAS and EAS sent warnings, alerts and news 911 designed to contact emergency responder 28 April 2017 Presentation Overview 15
ECS using SDN Implementation Network Implementation Each service resided in their own VLAN VLAN tagging used to identify service traffic Ex. WAS: VLAN tag 101, A911: VLAN tag 102 User End Four home devices, each installed with VMs for every service Management service used Hypervisor to switch between VMs OpenvSwitch used to deliver packets to VMs 28 April 2017 Presentation Overview 16
ECS using SDN Implementation Provider End 4 VMs used for implementing services, all hosted in a single system Managers of WAS and EAS used Servers via web interface VOIP used for 911 Servers displayed contents from Manager and Home device Linux Terminal Server Project(LTSP) server used for providing content to home device VMs OpenvSwitch used for same purpose as in the Home Devices 28 April 2017 Presentation Overview 17
ECS using SDN Implementation Implementation of the Network Architecture of the presented framework 28 April 2017 Presentation Overview 18
Documentation Full details for implementation at the University of Idaho can be found on website [2] Sourceforge page is also set up for the software to be downloaded and updated 28 April 2017 Presentation Overview 19
Implementation Interface Interface of the Managers of the Management service and WAS 28 April 2017 Presentation Overview 20
Implementation Interface Interface of Home Device when a warning is issued using WAS 28 April 2017 Presentation Overview 21
Conclusion Presented novel framework for ECS using Network Visualization via SDN Utilizes SDN to dynamically allocate Bandwidth and priority based packet switching VLANs help isolate services Details framework for the implementation details of demo at University of Idaho 28 April 2017 Presentation Overview 22
Future Work Migration to GENI for large scale implementation and testing Performance analysis will be carried out to test usability in real-world scenario Utilization for other commercial uses will be explored 28 April 2017 Presentation Overview 23
