DSL- Global solution for Interactive Broadband 2005 and beyond Steve Kingdom President, DSL Forum 10 March, 2005
Digital Subscriber Line The World s Leading Broadband Access Technology Global DSL subscribers sail past 100 million - February 2005 Annual growth in broadband DSL subscribers : approaching 60% over 2003 Total broadband DSL subscribers at year end 2004 : over 96 million People choose DSL at the rate of more than one every second Newer broadband markets grow fastest Established markets sustain strong growth
New Markets- Exponential Growth Newer broadband markets grew fastest in 2004 Turkey % Czech Republic % Ireland % Mexico % Malaysia % Venezuela % New Zealand % Lithuania % UK [+125%], France [+107%] and China [+100%] were the fastest growing established markets in 2004
Established DSL Markets Experience Solid Gains Established markets sustained strong growth in 2004 Six countries added over one million new subscribers in 2004 China million USA million France million United Kingdom million Italy million Germany million
New DSL Options Gain Traction At least 5 million VDSL connections in the world Most are in South Korea, Japan and China Belgium, Norway and Slovenia added new VDSL projects in 2004 Symmetric DSL services now reach 1.2 million subscribers ADSL2plus is in rapid deployment in Sweden, Norway and France ADSL2plus trials beginning in the USA; services coming onstream in the Netherlands in 2005
Copies of this presentation are available from: - Highlights Full broadband DSL subscriber reports will be available from: - Highlights Figures provided in this presentation are preliminary data for 2004, prepared for the DSL Forum by Point Topic on 4 March 2005.
DSL Forum Who we are The DSL Forum is recognized as the foremost industry consortium dedicated to developing the full potential of DSL broadband. Its membership includes 200 top service providers, equipment manufacturers and other interested parties worldwide -- all committed to developing common standards and embracing new applications to meet the needs of the next generation of multi-media services for DSL customers.
100 million and beyond Globally, we have surpassed 100 million DSL subscribers, and while we want to celebrate this major milestone, our eye is already on the next - Goal of 500 Million by 2010 (roughly ½ of the phone lines in the world) To achieve this goal, a couple of things need to happen. 1. DSL needs to continue to evolve and mature. Widespread rollout of faster speeds; VDSL or ADSL2/2plus/RE combination Move toward 100% availability Advanced interoperability & global retail availability of DSL CE 2. The internet needs to be enriched with applications that will change the way people use broadband from A Luxury to a Necessity. From View-only to full Broadband Interactive. DSL is strategically positioned to be the best option for interactive broadband, so the future is ours as these new applications take root! Three applications show the greatest promise, and this is where we will concentrate our discussion.
Overview This industry overview will look at how the DSL Forum will engage in the following areas: IP Video over DSL Voice over IP over DSL DSLHome networking
IP Video over DSL IP Video over DSL - Focusing on technical advancements that will get Video out of the trials and into the mainstream DSL marketplace. New Tutorial in Development New White Paper on Video-DSL s final frontier Active discussions in our Service Provider Action Council addressing best practices for Video Models. New developments: While TR-059 recommends a single BRAS as the Edge Router, work is underway in Working Text 101 to expand the architecture to include an optional second video service router, and new contributions are being reviewed; addressing areas such as access protocols, topology and security, multicast, and high availability. WT-101 : Migrating from ATM to Ethernet DSL Aggregation
End to end architecture for TV over DSL BTV Headend OSS / ACS Content Network VODServer Middleware & Appl. SW Metro / Core Network Single or Dual Edge Routers Internet PSTN Ethernet/ATM Aggregation Network
What is the driving factor behind TelcoTV? Fixed Video drives ARPU NAM ARPU (US$) source: Pyramid Research, The Yankee Group, December 2003
What are the potential services? Broadcast TV Movie Channels Premium Channels Pay-per-view Video on Demand Virtual Personal Video Recorder Advanced interactive services Gaming Ad insertion Potentially Quadruple The current voice revenue!
DSL Strengths/Disadvantages DSL Strength Clean Slate to develop top technology Video solution IP TV model- Multicast from day one No Fork-lift upgrade uses the same TR-059 network architecture Focus on Channels via Video on Demand platform Allows customers to skip commercials Network-based Personal video recording (NPVR) View programming on-demand similar to TiVo but without the TiVo hardware Allows for net-based broadcasting Possible to incorporate heavy local or specialized broadcasting for unique line-ups Issues Customers already have good Satellite & Cable video providers DSL is late to the game what is the change impetus? High cost & long term payback of investment Video requires lower error rate than Data. Multiple TVs in each house demand tons of bandwidth 1.5 Mb/s per SDTV and 7 to 9 Mb/s per HDTV stream, so a typical house will need 12+ meg connection Inside Wiring frequently inadequate Stable CPE is critical resynchronization is not pleasant when you are in the middle of a movie!

Voice over IP via DSL Voice over IP over DSL presents unique and cost effective opportunities, but also a host of issues, including security, emergency support, and access pipe subscription impacts. Much of this work is going on outside of the DSL Forum and we are staying aligned with our liaison partner organisations, such as SIP and IPCC, to improve its impact on home and business calling in the future. 22 In Summary DSL s global reach and advanced IP-centric architecture, positions DSL to be the key option for delivering interactive broadband services Consumers and businesses alike will benefit from the unique capabilities of DSL to serve networks and empower their critical applications. New products will take advantage of DSL s inherent components, merging telephony, data and video in new exciting ways. The lines will blur between traditional wired/wireless services extending the reach, portability and userfriendliness of DSL. DSL - much more than a phone line, it s s a global solution
