3 Introduction MediaPlatform offers a variety of solutions for both live and ondemand video to solve the challenges associated with enterprise video delivery across corporate networks. MediaPlatform can leverage existing infrastructure, in addition to offering software based solutions in combination with media server technologies to address any kind of network reality. The flexibility of MediaPlatform s approach enables enterprises to deploy the solution that best suits their specific needs, and at the lowest possible cost. In this solution overview we will briefly describe MediaPlatform SmartEdge. A software or appliance based solution for caching video on-demand, creating a pervasive video distribution solution across the enterprise. On-Demand Video Distribution Solutions MediaPlatform SmartEdge Intelligent Video Caching for VOD optimization of HTTP(s) video delivery within the enterprise s network. SmartEdge provides enterprises with a cost efficient solution for deploying an ecdn specifically for video served from MediaPlatform s Enterprise YouTube video content management, portal, and webcasting solutions. This is in contrast to generic HTTP optimization devices such as Riverbeds and Bluecoats, which focus on generic caching of all HTTP(s) traffic, and which have a very high implementation cost that makes deploying them strictly for video traffic too costly. SmartEdge is a software based solution, and does not require special hardware such as wire taps. It can be purchased as software only, or as a hardware appliance which can be shipped and installed to network locations that require a plug and play solution. SmartEdge is comprised of edge nodes, each with a set of edge node server. Each edge node is autonomous, and is strategically positioned on the network to serve as an edge cache for edge network locations where caching and pre-positioning is needed to provide optimal video quality with minimal network impact. Figure 3 illustrates a sample architecture with two edge nodes. MediaPlatform SmartEdge is an enterprise grade CDN (Content Delivery Network) that is focused on the acceleration and 2 P a g e

4 appropriate edge node where video is cached. For example, an end user in location B would not try to pull video from the edge node in location A. This handled at the application level by a mapping table. For example, map to Location A and map to Location B. In this scenario, the video player can have special client logic that will pull this mapping table and machine's (external) IP (from a server somewhere), and reroute the video request from the origin to the edge node based on the machine's (external) IP. Figure 3 As each edge node is autonomous, Edge Node A operates independently of Edge Node B. Specifically, the edge nodes do not share cache, have their own caching policies, and are not impacted in performance or reliability by other edge nodes. Each edge node is administered by directly connecting to the administrative interface on that edge node, and each edge node is aware of the location of the origin server. Automatic Routing Logic Redundancy and Transparency Each SmartEdge edge node provides a fall back capability to maintain redundancy in the distribution system so that each request for a video is able to fallback to another local edge node, or the origin server if the end users primary edge node is unavailable. This redundancy and fall back is handled by the MediaPlatform Unified Video Player when it detects that it cannot pull the video from the primary source, and it will continue to fall back to a different source until a successful source is discovered. The prioritized list of sources is defined at the MediaPlatform application level. Here are two examples of a prioritized list of sources. SmartEdge uses an intelligent, automatic routing logic which ensures that each end user watching video pulls video from the 3 P a g e

5 Example 1: Byte Range Caching Edge Node A Edge Node B Origin Server For unsegmented video content, such as an MP4 file, SmartEdge caches at the byte range level. This way, if an end user watches only part of an MP4 video, only that part will be cached. Example 2: Edge Node B Origin Server In Example #1, the video player will attempt to pull the video from Edge A. If unsuccessful, it will fall back to Edge B. If that is also unsuccessful, then it will fall back to pulling from the Origin. In Example #2, the video player will attempt to pull from Edge B, and will fall back to the Origin if that is unsuccessful. Caching on the Fly SmartEdge is capable of caching video on the fly. For example, as the data is being requested, and being pulled from the origin server, the edge node will cache the requested data. The SmartEdge edge node only caches video, and maintains a list of the type of video formats it will cache. Positive Cache hit and Efficiency For each piece of video content (ABR or Non-ABR), SmartEdge provides an efficient means of dynamically determining a positive 4 P a g e

6 cache hit. If the cache data no longer matches what is on the origin server (for example, a newer version of the video is available) SmartEdge redirects the end user to pull the content from the origin server. In addition, the SmartEdge edge node updates the stale cache by fetching the new content from the origin server. Direct Edge Node Administration SmartEdge provides an administrative UI where each edge node can be directly administered. This allows for the configuration of edge nodes, and provides reporting and performance data for each edge node. 5 P a g e
