1 Keynote Speakers CyberC 2010 Keynote Speaker 1 Wireless Sensor Network Security: Overview and Future Perspective Prof. Anup Kumar University of Louisville, USA Wireless sensor networks have the potential to significantly improve the quality and amount of data collected in numerous physical environments including battlefield monitoring, structure health monitoring and hazardous material tracking. However, securing the wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is challenge that must be met before they can be widely adopted for practical applications. This talk will discuss security issues at different layers for WSN and will specifically discuss security solutions at physical layer. In order to provide security solutions at physical layer wide bandwidth radios have to be adapted for wireless sensor networks which use a narrow bandwidth to provide the same level of security. Frequency hopping spread spectrum (FHSS) is one technique that is commonly used to provide security for wide bandwidth radios. The most popular scheme for implementing FHSS is Bluetooth. Unfortunately, Bluetooth frequency hopping is designed to reduce interference, not provide security. Therefore, this talk presents a new frequency selection kernel named Signal Strength Seeded FH (SSSFH) that uses signal strength measurements gathered from the network to seed the frequency selection kernel to introduce randomness and unpredictability to dynamic frequency selection. The research shows that SSSFH provides acceptable performance compared to the Bluetooth selection kernel in addition to flexibility for changing the size of the channel pool as an application or environment might require. Anup Kumar completed his Ph.D. from NCSU and is currently a Professor of CECS Department at the University of Louisville. He is also the Director of Mobile Information Network and Distributed Systems (MINDS) Lab ( His research interests include web services, wireless networks, distributed system modelling, and simulation. He is the Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Services Computing. He is also the Associate Editor of Internal Journal of Web Services Research and International Society of Computers and Their Application Journal. He is a member of IEEE Distinguished Visitor Program ( ). He is currently serving on the organising committees of many international conferences. 3 Keynote Speaker 2 Swarm Based Knowledge Discovery with Heterogeneous High Performance Computing Dr. Xiaohui Cui Oak Ridge National Laboratory, USA Swarm Intelligence is an emerging field of artificial intelligence. It is a biologically-inspired computational intelligence research based on the behavioral models of social insects and animals such as ants, bees, and birds. It is based on the social insects metaphor where a number of insects with limited capabilities are able to come to intelligent solutions for complex problems. This presentation will review the Swarm Intelligence s highly desirable features. Our approaches of applying Swarm Intelligence in knowledge discovery will be discussed. As the number of data and feature dimensions grows, it becomes increasingly difficult to generate meaningful results in a reasonable amount of time. In the last few years, the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) has received attention for its ability to solve highly parallel and semiparallel problems much faster than the traditional sequential processor. GPU computing is a new computing approach whereby hundreds of streaming processors on a GPU chip simultaneously communicate and cooperate to solve complex computing problems. This talk describes our research effort in exploiting swarm based knowledge discovery on GPU and other heterogeneous computing platform. Dr. Xiaohui Cui is the scientist staff of the Computational Sciences & Engineering Division, Oak Ridge National Laboratory of Department of Energy and the adjunct associate professor of University of Louisville in Kentucky. His research interests include swarm intelligence, agent based modeling and simulation, GIS and transportation, emergent behavior, complex system, high performance computing, social computing, and information retrieval. His research programs have been supported by Office of Navy Research, Department of Homeland Security, Department of Energy and Lockheed Martin Company. His research has been reported by MSNBC, New Scientist etc. In 2008 and 2009, he received the Department of Energy Outstanding Mentor Awards and the Significant Event Award. xxi
4 Keynote Speaker 3 Wireless Multi-hop Network Capacity: The Bottleneck for Ubiquitous Mobile Communications Dr. Bin Xie InfoBeyond Technology LLC The mobile users experience the growing demand for wirelessly accessing the networks for various services. Therefore, the theoretical analysis of wireless network capacity is an essential issue in the mobile network. In an ad hoc network, for instance, the throughput available to nodes is unexpectedly limited by the relaying load created by other distant nodes, as most of data packets have to be forwarded by intermediate nodes before reaching the destination. Let us consider an ad hoc network in which nodes are randomly placed in the network, using a common single wireless channel. If the one-hop link capacity is weighed as 1, the theoretical analysis of Gupta and Kumar shows that the end-to-end throughput achievable for a node is Θ (1 / n). This means the available throughput per node approaches to zero as the number of nodes goes to infinity. After Gupta and Kumar s initial work, a number of theoretical analyses have been conducted for investigating the network capacity of wireless multi-hop networks. M. Grossglauser studied how the node mobility can increase the network capacity. Wang et al. further studied the throughput capacity of random ad hoc networks in which the traffic is transmitted by means of unicast routing, multicast routing, broadcasting, or different forms of anycasting. Liu et al., Kozat et al., and Zemlianov et al. consider the network capacity in the Multi-hop Cellular Networks. Kyasanur and Vaidya addressed the network capacity in a multiple channel wireless network. In this talk, we will first review the theoretical results of various multi-hop networks. We then present our work that mathematically analyzes the maximum Internet capacity for wireless mesh networks. We established the analytical mesh network model in which wireless mesh routers are interconnected by multiple links. At the same time, the infrastructure such as Internet Gateway provides the Internet connectivity and thus the mobile users in the network access the Internet by multi-hop route of mesh routers. In addition, the mobile users are able to communicate with each other by the ad hoc backbone of mesh routers without any infrastructure. We specifically show the upper bounds of the Internet capacity and its ad hoc capacity as well. Dr. Bin Xie received his M.Sc and Ph.D degrees (with honors) in Computer Science and Computer Engineering from the University of Louisville, Kentucky, USA, 2003 and 3006 respectively. He is the author of the books titled Heterogeneous Wireless Networks- Networking Protocol to Security (VDM Publishing House: ISBN: ), and Handbook/Encyclopedia of Ad Hoc and Ubiquitous Computing (World Scientific: ISBN-10: X), and the forthcoming book of Applications and Services for Mobile Systems (Auerbach Publication, Taylor and Francis Group, to appear, 2010). He has published 60+ articles in the IEEE conferences, journals or books. Many of his papers have appeared in the most-cited journal in the areas of Telecommunication and Computer Architecture. His research interests are focused on MANETs, embedded wireless sensor networks, network security, 3G and beyond, and wireless mesh networks. Dr. Xie also is an IEEE senior member and currently is the vice chair of the IEEE Computer Society Technical Committee on Simulation (TCSIM). He served as the program chair of IEEE HPCC-09 received Outstanding Leadership Award. He was the program chair and xxii
5 TPC member of 20+ international conferences. He is also severing as the editor of International Journal of Information Technology, Communications and Convergence (IJITCC) (InderScience Publisher). Dr. Xie is the founder and president of InfoBeyond Technology LLC. He currently is the PI of several research projects sponsored Army, Navy, and Air Force. xxiii
