4 PAN and PAN Device Definitions PAN is a premise area network and is fully inclusive of the scope of a home area network (HAN) and also covers commercial premises PAN device is a type of end device that is located on a customer premise and communicates using a PAN, such as a smart thermostat, in home display or relay A PAN device can accept controls and/or report events PAN devices commonly use meters as communication gateways Events that are interfaced to a PAN Device would use the EndDeviceEvent message to convey these events between the back office systems and the PAN device 4

5 PAN Device Characteristics The meter is used as a gateway for communication between the head end system and the PAN device PAN devices may react to control messages or generate EndDeviceEvents Some PAN devices may have displays and can present information to consumers PAN devices may be configured to react to pricing or other demand response related signals that are issued as EndDeviceControls PAN devices are a special type of EndDevice and are modelled as EndDevices in the CIM 5

6 PAN Device Characteristics PAN Device applications include: Dynamic Pricing Demand Response Displays or other functions to provide information to customers Types of PAN devices include smart thermostats, in home displays, relays, etc. 6

7 Non-Technical Challenges Much interest in harmonizing with the Zigbee Alliance Smart Energy Profile but which version? SEP 1 or SEP 2? SEP has already borrowed from IEC Zigbee Alliance could not provide assurances that we could keep the CIM free from any licensing restrictions The publicly available Zigbee specifications for SEP require acceptance of terms that are unacceptable to many Zigbee SEP 2 vote recently failed Other organizations have been asking for IEC team to adopt their models within the CIM, often these were variants of the CIM WG14 decided to focus on putting models that support the necessary functionality in the CIM in a generic manner, instead of directly adopting models from any one group WG14 decided to not accept any models that may require licenses 7

15 EndDeviceControl Messages for PAN Devices EndDeviceControl messages may convey PAN command & control from the following systems: Demand Response Management System Dynamic Pricing Systems Real-time Pricing Systems There is typically a head end system that will convey controls to a meter or gateway 15

19 Addressing of EndDeviceControls Messages Controls can be addressed in many ways: EndDevice by mrid EndDevice by Name.name EndDeviceGroup UsagePoint UsagePointGroups Meter or gateway can decide on routing/forwarding of controls to PAN devices 19
