Optimizing IP Networks for Acquisition Presented by Henry Quintana, Director of Solutions TVU Networks
More Content, Less Cost
IP-based Infrastructure
Limitations All transmission mediums have compromises Satellite Microwave Ideal Coverage Satellite Microwave Cellular Cellular
IP Network Performance A number of factors affect the perceived speed of a give network connection: Bandwidth Throughput Latency Jitter Error Rate
Bitrate and Picture Quality VBR traditionally allows for higher bitrates when encoding complex video segments Produces better quality when compared to a constant bitrate encoding of the same segments Smart VBR provides on-the-fly resolution and frame rate changes to compensate for unstable network conditions With H.264 encoding, target bitrates should be: 8+ Mb/s for HD quality video 4+ Mb/s for SD quality video
Link Aggregation - Bonding May Not Work Bonding creates a single channel Each of the data links have different performance: Bandwidth Packet loss rate Latency Fluctuations over time Simple bonding can make each link perform as poor as the worst link in the bonding
Managing Packet Loss Key to delivering a good versus great picture over wireless networks Even a small amount of packet loss can result in undesirable picture quality Retransmission is a common answer but comes at a price
Forward Error Correction Designed to correct for packet loss Retransmission to recover lost packets introduces latency Without error correction and retransmission, picture quality suffers.
Inverse StatMux Breaks a continuous video stream into many small packets Transmits packets via each link according to its throughput while taking loss rate and latency into account At the receiving end, it aggregates the packets from across all of the links Finally, error correction is done on the reconstructed stream
A Better FEC Approach - Inverse StatMux+ Improves on quality with advanced FEC algorithms Dynamically changes the amount of FEC overhead Provides FEC across multiple links
The End Results Able to aggregate different transmission networks: satellite - fixed, vehicle, BGAN microwave - vehicle, portable, fixed MIMO ethernet - wired, wireless cellular - multiple carriers Can dynamically add and remove any connections Sub-second latency, even from a moving vehicle Maximum throughput, 10+ Mb/s with cellular only infrastructure High success rate
IP Based Live Video Switching, Routing and Distribution Take any live video feed from a portable transmitter or SDI source and share it instantly over IP with any number of other locations.
Switching Between Live Feeds Accepts IP video sources as well as baseband SDI inputs Frame accurate switching between different video streams without disruption and sub-second latency Hot fail-over support via redundant Grid systems
Automated Scheduling Schedule individual transceivers to transmit to a particular receiver on a particular day and time Fully automated without the need for manual intervention from the receiver to manage routing
Global Reach, Local Interest
Thank You

Live Video Transmission in Challenging Environments Transmitting live HD video wirelessly in environments such as crowded urban settings and around large sports arenas can be challenging Traditional satellite and microwave have their limitations, such as with buildings, line-of-sight and limited use in bad weather Even cellular uplink transmission can be affected by network load and available signal strength.
MIMO Nodes and MIMO Mesh Allows for multiple independent data streams to be transmitted out from multiple antennas or nodes to be received by multiple antennas or nodes When multiple MIMO nodes are set up in an area, a mesh network is created with packets being transmitted and received across the nodes to assist with the delivery of video from a transmitter in the field to a receiver at home base. The MIMO nodes are relatively small and easy to set up, as they can be attached to buildings or other structures. They don t require line of sight to operate. MIMO MESH is self forming and self healing. This provides ultimate flexibility and efficiency. MIMO Antennas or Nodes
