Admin issue: last time we discussed the potential need for self-support if Internet2 can no longer support it. People agreed that they would like to see this forum continue independently from the I2 Connectors BOF, and were ok with paying an add-on registration fee or some other mechanism if needed. Haven t had the discussion with Ana yet (Monday) but likely to hear bad news. Will send outcome to new list (geeks@googlegroups.com), so make sure you re on it (circulating). 2 Many times, we leave the political issues till later, and then never get to them. Let s start with one. Stimulus proposals (this is not a Quilt discussion) I m sure many people have been madly forming teams and typing away on all the shotgunned strategies to get our collective hands on various pieces of Stimulus money. People probably can t discuss details much, since they re due mid-august. Can you? Still, let s assume that following all the hush-hush and money politics, that various Broadband initiatives do get funded. It seems likely that not all winning props will be from existing RON entities. In particular, broadband coops have emerged in some states already, funded by previous funding windfalls like tobacco settlement money to build fiber to underserved state regions. This trend seems very likely to continue and expand. The question is, in your states/regions, do you see these emerging coops as competition? Partners and/or customers? Irrelevant to your mission because they serve different sectors? Not worried because you have experience/clue and they don t? Worried because they ll offer cheaper L1/L2 services than traditional RON L3? Screw it up and give everyone a bad name? Let s speculate!

3 Couple of slides from Dan s Weds 9:30 Pluggable Optical Update talk to stimulate discussion Think about these questions, and we ll come back to them in a few slides. SFP+ form factor switches/blades starting to emerge vs traditional separate SFP and XFP. Has anybody bought one yet? Thoughts? Poll: Who runs dwdm systems? Do you use dwdm XFPs in your switches as alien wavelengths into the dwdm system? If not, why not? Demarc? Are your dwdm service offerings sensitive or insensitive to transponder cost? You do offer lambda transport service offerings separate from your aggregate L3 service, right? How do you see the growth of L1/L2 transport relative to other service offerings?

4 So everybody seems pretty happy now, why introduce another form factor evolution? SFPs in 1-2.5G have come out economically in SX, LX, and 80km ZX and DWDM ranges. FEC on system OEM boards has increased this to 120km. Incredible for 1.0w power budget! Similarly for XFPs in 10G to 40 and 80km. Problem is that dual successful form factors forces system OEMs to make hard design choices. Eg, 40x 1G and 4x 10G in chassis switch boards, users must buy them both. In fixed config switches, 24x SFPs + 2x XFPs is common design, but if users need more XFPs, pick someone else s. So drive to converge 1-2.5G and 10G form factors into new SFP+ MSA. Higher density than XFP, and (with proper backplane design) all ports could be 1G or 10G as user needs simply by plugging in either SFP or SFP+.

5 This sounds like a strong SFP+ advantage over XFP, what s the problem? Power budget. Trying to replicate what XFPs have accomplished with only 1.0w instead of 3.5w. Extended reach ER and dwdm just aren t possible yet, and may never be. In fact, some pluggable vendors tried introduce double-sized XFP-E standard in 2006 to allow 8w for cooled tunable dwdm. But system OEMs didn t want lower density, and it lost. Now first-gen dwdm tunables have arrived as XFPs. So it s very early days for SFP+ fixed-config switches and switch blades. Part of problem is backplanes have had to be redesigned to do 1G/10G, harder to justify development in a tough market vs better-selling wirecloset switches. We ve been testing some, perfect SFP+ switch not here yet.

6 New development: dwdm tunable XFPs, and why do people care? Folks that run dwdm systems know that tunable 10G transponders (which use 300-pin MSAs) greatly simplified sparing and operation vs older generation single colors. Dropping prices for dwdm XFPs (currently under $8k/pr for 80km) have proven to be very economic vs $25-50k/pr for dwdm system transponders (again, the value of MSA which makes the optics generic rather than proprietary). In addition, in single-owner applications, having baseband switch optics just to get to dwdm transponder client side interfaces ( 6 lasers ) vs direct insertion of aliens on dwdm frequency ( 2 lasers ) is uneconomic where there s no need for a customer demarc handoff and ROADMs handle aggregate power balancing. But too many XFP colors to keep stocked! Now XFP tunables are out (eg JDSU) & on switch support roadmaps.

7 New Development: OTN in an XFP If you think about dwdm XFPs, what do you give up using aliens instead of traditional transponders (besides a demarc)? FEC, the ability to extend the reach from eg 80km to eg 120km. Most xpdrs implement ITU-T G.709 compliant OTN frames on the line side and perform all necessary forward error correction and OAM processing, Now, at least one company (Menara) has come out with OTN in hardware on the dwdm XFP, so the host switch doesn t need to implement it. An important step in the migration of FEC from singlevendor dwdm line side to next-gen multivendor client-side handoffs. How about tunable and OTN? Not enough power budget!
