Submerge electrode tip and temperature probe approximately 4 cm (1½ ) into sample to be tested and stir gently. Allow time for electrode to stabilize. The is displayed on primary LCD and temperature on secondary LCD. If reading is out of range, closest full-scale value will be displayed blinking on primary LCD. 8

If measurements are taken successively in different samples, it is recommended to rinse electrode thoroughly with deionized water or tap water and n with some of next sample to prevent cross-contamination. The reading is affected by temperature. In order to measure accurately, temperature effect must be compensated for. To use Automatic Temperature Compensation feature, connect and submerge HI 7669/2W temperature probe into sample as close as possible to electrode and wait for a few seconds. If temperature of sample is known, simple manual compensation can be performed by disconnecting temperature probe. The display will n show default temperature of 25 ºC or last temperature reading with ºC tag blinking. The temperature can now be adjusted with ARROW keys (from 9.9 ºC to ºC). C /ORP MEASUREMENTS (HI 111 and HI 113) An optional ORP electrode must be used to perform ORP measurements (see Accessories). Oxidation-Reduction Potential (REDOX) measurements provide quantification of oxidizing or reducing power of tested sample. To correctly perform a REDOX measurement, surface of ORP electrode must be clean and smooth. Press RANGE to enter range. Submerge tip of ORP electrode 4 cm (1½ ) into sample to be tested and allow a few seconds for reading to stabilize. The instrument displays reading on primary LCD and temperature on secondary LCD. C If reading is out of range, closest full-scale value will be displayed blinking on primary LCD. 9

RELATIVE MEASUREMENTS (HI 111 and HI 113) Press RANGE until rel message will be displayed on secondary LCD line for about one second and tag will blink. After one second temperature will be displayed on secondary LCD. The reading displayed by instrument is equal to difference between current input value and relative offset established in relative calibration. TEMPERATURE MEASUREMENTS Connect HI 7669/2W temperature probe to appropriate socket and turn instrument on. Immerse temperature probe into sample and allow reading on secondary LCD to stabilize. MEMORY FUNCTION Press and hold down MEM. The last reading will appear on LCD along with MEM tag until MEM is released. Every time you calibrate instrument use fresh buffers and perform an electrode Cleaning Procedure (see page 30). 10

PREPARATION Pour small quantities of buffer solutions into clean beakers. If possible, use plastic or glass beakers to minimize any EMC interferences. For accurate calibration and to minimize cross-contamination, use two beakers for each buffer solution. One for rinsing electrode and one for calibration. If you are measuring in acidic range, use 7.01 or 6.86 as first buffer and 4.01 or 1.68 (HI 112, HI 113) as second buffer. If you are measuring in alkaline range, use 7.01 or 6.86 as first buffer and 10.01, 9.18 or (HI 112, HI 113) as second buffer. PROCEDURE Calibration can be performed in three (HI 110, HI 111) or five (HI 112, HI 113) calibration points. For accurate measurements, it is recommended to perform a three (HI 110, HI 111) or five-point calibration (HI 112, HI 113). However, at least a two-point calibration is suggested. The calibration buffer can be selected from calibration buffer list that includes defined custom buffers in SETUP menu and memorized standard buffers: 4.01, 6.86, 7.01, 9.18, (HI 110, HI 111) 1.68, 4.01, 6.86, 7.01, 9.18, 10.01, (HI 112, HI 113) The custom buffers are a special option that allows user to calibrate in a buffer solution different from a standard one. Up to two custom buffers can be set in SETUP menu (see page 17). Each custom buffer value can be changed in a ±1.0 window around set value, during calibration, when it is selected; BUFFER tag will blink. The instruments will automatically skip buffer used during calibration and buffers which are in a ±0.2 window, around one of calibrated buffers. All new calibrations will override existing stored calibration data in a ±0.2 window. The slopes adjacent to new points will be reevaluated. If new calibration point has no correspondence in existing stored calibration data, it is added to it if this is not full (3 or 5 points), or instrument will ask which buffer will be replaced by current buffer. If at least a two-point calibration has been performed and an offset correction of electrode is wanted, keeping unchanged existing slopes, perform a onepoint calibration with OFFS option selected in SETUP menu. If Pnt option is selected, slopes adjacent to calibration points will be reevaluated. 11

THREE- (HI 110, HI 111) / FIVE-POINT (HI 112, HI 113) IBRATION Immerse electrode and temperature probe approximately 4 cm (1½ ) into a buffer solution and stir gently. The instruments will memorize two-point calibration data and will return to measurement mode. ONE-POINT IBRATION Two SETUP selectable options are available: Pnt and OFFS. If Pnt option is selected, new calibration point overrides an existing one. The adjacent slopes will be reevaluated. If OFFS option is selected, an electrode offset correction is performed keeping unchanged existing slopes. Proceed as described in THREE-/FIVE-POINT IBRATION section. Press after first calibration point was confirmed. The instruments will memorize one-point calibration data and will return to measurement mode. Note: If value measured by instrument is not close to selected buffer, WRONG and WRONG tags will blink alternately. In this case check if correct buffer has been used, or regenerate electrode by following Cleaning Procedure (see page 30). If necessary, change buffer or electrode. When a custom buffer is displayed, BUFFER tag blinks. To change custom buffer value in according with buffer temperature proceed as described in WORKING WITH CUSTOM BUFFERS paragraph (see page 14). If buffer temperature or manual temperature exceeds temperature limits of buffer, WRONG tag and temperature reading will blink. If WRONG, BUFFER tags and OLD message are displayed blinking on secondary LCD line, an inconsistency between new and previous (old) calibration is detected. Clear calibration parameters and proceed with calibration from current calibration point. The instrument will keep all confirmed values during current calibration. 13

They will disappear when rinsed with water. During transport, tiny bubbles of air may form inside glass bulb affecting proper functioning of electrode. These bubbles can be removed by shaking down electrode as you would do with a glass rmometer. If bulb and/or junction is dry, soak electrode in HI or HI Storage Solution for at least one hour. 28

For refillable electrodes: If filling solution (electrolyte) is more than 2½ cm (1 ) below fill hole, add HI 7082 or HI M KCl Electrolyte Solution for double junction or HI 7071 or HI M KCl+AgCl Electrolyte Solution for single junction electrodes. For faster response, unscrew fill hole screw during measurements. For AMPHEL electrodes: If electrode does not respond to changes, battery is run down and electrode should be replaced. MEASUREMENT Rinse electrode tip with distilled water. Immerse tip (bottom 4 cm /1½ ) in sample and stir gently for a few seconds. For a faster response and to avoid cross-contamination of samples, rinse electrode tip with a few drops of solution to be tested, before taking measurements. STORAGE PROCEDURE To minimize clogging and assure a quick response time, glass bulb and junction should be kept moist and not allowed to dry out. Replace solution in protective cap with a few drops of HI or HI Storage Solution or, in its absence, Filling Solution (HI 7071 or HI 8071 for single junction and HI 7082 or HI 8082 for double junction electrodes). Follow Preparation Procedure on page 28 before taking measurements. Note: NEVER STORE THE ELECTRODE IN DISTILLED OR DEIONIZED WATER. PERIODIC MAINTENANCE Inspect electrode and cable. The cable used for connection to instrument must be intact and re must be no points of broken insulation on cable or cracks on electrode stem or bulb. Connectors must be perfectly clean and dry. If any scratches or cracks are present, replace electrode. Rinse off any salt deposits with water. For refillable electrodes: Refill reference chamber with fresh electrolyte (HI 7071 or HI 8071 for single junction and HI 7082 or HI 8082 for double junction electrodes). Allow electrode to stand upright for 1 hour. Follow Storage Procedure above. 29

CLEANING PROCEDURE General Soak in Hanna HI 7061 or HI 8061 General Cleaning Solution for approximately ½ hour. Protein Soak in Hanna HI 7073 or HI 8073 Protein Cleaning Solution for 15 minutes. Inorganic Soak in Hanna HI 7074 Inorganic Cleaning Solution for 15 minutes. Oil/grease Rinse with Hanna HI 7077 or HI 8077 Oil and Fat Cleaning Solution. IMPORTANT: After performing any of cleaning procedures, rinse electrode thoroughly with distilled water, refill reference chamber with fresh electrolyte (not necessary for gel-filled electrodes) and soak electrode in HI or HI Storage Solution for at least 1 hour before taking measurements. 30

TEMPERATURE CORRELATION FOR SENSITIVE GLASS The resistance of glass electrodes partially depends on temperature. The lower temperature, higher resistance. It takes more time for reading to stabilize if resistance is higher. In addition, response time will suffer to a greater degree at temperatures below 25 ºC. Since resistance of electrode is in range of Mohm, current across membrane is in pico Ampere range. Large currents can disturb calibration of electrode for many hours. For se reasons high humidity environments, short circuits and static discharges are detrimental to a stable reading. The electrode s life also depends on temperature. If constantly used at high temperatures, electrode life is drastically reduced. Typical Electrode Life Ambient Temperature 1 3 years 90 ºC Less than 4 months 120 ºC Less than 1 month Alkaline Error High concentrations of sodium ions interfere with readings in alkaline solutions. The at which interference starts to be significant depends upon composition of glass. This interference is called alkaline error and causes to be underestimated. Hanna s glass formulations have indicated characteristics. Sodium Ion Correction for Glass at ºC Concentration Error 0.1 Mol L -1 Na Mol L -1 Na

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR USERS Before using se products, make sure y are entirely suitable for environment in which y are used. Operation of se instruments in residential areas could cause unacceptable interferences to radio and TV equipment, requiring operator to follow all necessary steps to correct interferences. The glass bulb at end of electrode is sensitive to electrostatic discharges. Avoid touching this glass bulb at all times. During operation, ESD wrist straps should be worn to avoid possible damage to electrode by electrostatic discharges. Any variation introduced by user to supplied equipment may degrade instruments EMC performance. To avoid electrical shock, do not use se instruments when voltages at measurement surface exceed 24 VAC or 60 VDC. To avoid damage or burns, do not perform any measurement in microwave ovens. 39
