4M06 E&M Interface Module Guide This guide explains how to configure a 4M06 E&M Interface Module for use in a G-400 series communication system. After following this guide, you should be able to use an E&M device with a G- 400 series system and configure it appropriately. Overview Summary These are the basic steps you will perform when following this guide: 1) Understand the E&M module. 2) Insert the module. 3) Attach a device to the module. 4) Adjust the E&M module settings. 5) Learn how to access detailed configuration help. E&M Module Basics The 4M06 E&M module is designed to connect to an external 4-Wire E&M device or connection, such as a microwave audio channel. It is useful when interfacing with any E&M based equipment. The 4M06 E&M module supports 5 modes of E&M signaling Type I, Type II, Type III, Type IV, and Type V (or, Types 1-5). (If you require the 6 th mode (SSDC5), please contact customer service for assistance.) Each of these modes is defined by E&M standards and has different signaling characteristics. Which mode you use on the module depends on the type of E&M device/equipment you are connecting it to. The E&M module should be configured to match the attached device. The E&M module has physical jumpers on the module to switch between the different modes (due to the high voltages involved with E&M, it is not software configurable). The jumpers are located on the top of the module approximately 4cm from the external cable jack. The following chart describes the jumper positions for the different modes: E&M Type Jumper 1 (JP1) Jumper 2 (JP2) Jumper 3 (JP3) Jumper 4 (JP4) Type I 1-2 Open Type II Type III Type IV M06 GLOBAL COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY, LLC 1
Type V 1-2 Open Jumper Position Explanation: Position 1-2 indicates that the jumper should be on the 2 pins furthest away from the external cable jack. Position 2-3 indicates that the jumper should be on the 2 pins closest to the external cable jack. Open indicates the jumper should be removed or simply hung off of pin 1 or 3 (with no connection to the central pin). Installing the Module 1) Configure the jumpers on the E&M module based on the type of E&M connection your existing E&M equipment is using. (See the previous section for an explanation of the types and the jumper positions.) 2) Important Note: It is essential to configure the jumpers properly. You could damage the E&M module or your equipment if the types do not match! 3) Insert the 4M06 E&M module into a slot on the back of the G-400 series system, preferably with the system powered off,. (You can insert the module while the system is powered on, but doing so is not recommended because it may disrupt ongoing communication.) 4) After the module is well seated, tighten the thumb-screw on the module to secure the module and to help reduce RF interference. 5) Power on the G-400 series system and wait for it to indicate System Running on the front panel display. 6) Browse to the user interface on the G-400 using any standards-compliant web browser. (If needed, refer to the G-400 Quick Start Guide for assistance with this step.) 7) Verify that the E&M module is visible in the G-400 Link Builder interface. It will be visible as a module on the left hand side with the name E&M #, where the # is the slot number the module is inserted in. Device/Equipment Attachment After setting the jumpers on the E&M module to the correct type for your equipment and installing the module, you now need to install a cable between the E&M module and your equipment. Use the following pin-out of the E&M module's DB-9 connector to properly craft a cable for your E&M equipment: DB-9 Pin Name Description Pin 1 SB Signal Battery Pin 2 SG Signal Ground Pin 3 E Earth/Ear M06 GLOBAL COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY, LLC 2
Pin 4 M Magneto/Mouth Pin 5 T1 Ground or Battery of the transmit voice pair (type dependent) Pin 6 R1 Ground or Battery of the transmit voice pair (type dependent) Pin 7 T Ground or Battery of the receive voice pair (type dependent) Pin 8 R Ground or Battery of the receive voice pair (type dependent) Pin 9 Ground Ground Important Reminder: The E&M module provides 4-Wire E&M audio. This means that in addition to the E&M signals themselves, it uses 2 wires for transmitting audio and 2 wires for receiving audio. Also, the E&M signals are high voltage! Be careful when connecting a cable so that you do not cause an electric shock or arc. We strongly suggest powering off the G-400 system and your E&M device/equipment to guarantee no voltage changes while connecting a cable. Connect the cable to the E&M module, and then connect the other end of the cable to your equipment. Verifying Operation 1) If you have not done so already, power on the G-400 system and access the user interface using a web browser and log in. (See the G-400 Quick Start Guide for assistance with this step.) 2) If you have not done so already, turn on Setup Mode. This setting can be found in the General Settings of the G-400 user interface. (Refer to the G-400 Quick Start Guide for help with this.) 3) In the Link Builder, you will see a small sine wave graphic on the right hand side of each of the nets. Clicking this button turns on a test tone. This causes all modules in that net to transmit a 1kHz tone. Clicking the button again turns off the tone. 4) Place the module in an empty net by dragging it from the left hand side to the net and dropping it there. 5) Click the test tone button on that net. (Note that this will cause an audio transmission! If you have a device connected to the E&M module it will receive and likely transmit the tone. If that is not acceptable, turn off your device/equipment prior to clicking the test tone button.) 6) The module's red TX indicator should light up. This indicates that the module is transmitting audio. 7) When finished, click the test tone button again to turn off the test tone. 8) If desired and possible, cause your device/equipment to transmit audio to the E&M module. Doing so should cause the RX light on the E&M module graphic to turn on M06 GLOBAL COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY, LLC 3
Accessing the Module Settings Tool 1) If you have not done so already, access the G-400 series user interface using a web browser and log in. (See the G-400 Quick Start Guide for assistance with this step.) 2) There are two ways to access the configuration settings for the module while in the Link Builder: a) Click on the gear icon in the upper right hand corner to access the configuration section of the system. You will be taken to the Module List page. From there, just click on the module you want to configure. b) Click on the Configure button at the top of the Link Builder, then click on the module. A small dialog will appear. In the lower right hand corner of the module, you will see some small blue gears. Click on those blue gears. 3) If you are already in the configuration section of the system (and are not in the Link Builder ), hover over the Configure header. From there, select the Modules option. You will be taken to the Module List page. From there, just click on the module you want to configure. Using the Module Settings Tool 1) The settings are divided into groups based on what they are for. 2) Each group has a help icon in the upper right hand corner. Clicking on this icon displays information about settings in that group. 3) Generally speaking, after adjusting one or more settings, click the Save Changes button at the bottom of the window. If you have made an invalid entry (uncommon), the save will fail and that particular setting will be highlighted in red. If not, the setting changes will take effect immediately. 4) If you make changes but change your mind prior to saving the settings, click the Cancel button. This reverts the settings you see to the ones actively being used. 5) To load the default settings, click the Load Defaults button. Note that the settings will not be changed in the system unless you click Save Changes. Configuring the E&M Module Settings 1) Note on Automatic RX Gain: One extremely powerful feature on the G-400 series products is Automatic RX Gain. If this setting is On, the audio coming from the E&M device into the system will have its audio level adjusted automatically. While that feature is extremely useful, we recommend turning it off during initial configuration. This allows you to adjust the E&M device's output to get it close enough. After that, turning on the Automatic RX Gain will provide an ideal level of incoming audio in most situations. (For example: If the E&M device's output is not perfect, or there are loud or soft talkers using the system.) 2) Note on Level Tuning in General: There are sliders on the E&M module's settings to adjust M06 GLOBAL COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY, LLC 4
the incoming (RX) and outgoing (TX) audio levels. (RX gain adjustment is only available if Automatic RX Gain is turned Off - if using the Automatic RX Gain feature, adjusting this is unnecessary.) Slide these to the left and right to adjust for what the E&M device is transmitting or receiving. Note that you must save the settings after an adjustment. 3) Note on Level Tuning with Handset: Using a Handset module to help tune the E&M module's levels is very common. In the Link Builder, put the E&M module and the handset module in the same net. Then, you can key up the handset module and speak into its microphone. That audio will be transmitted out to the E&M device. Conversely, any audio coming in from the E&M device will be transmitted out the handset and heard in its ear piece/speaker. This easily allows you to adjust levels as appropriate. 4) Note on Using the Signal LED: The front panel of the G-400 series product has 3 LEDs to assist with level tuning. The most important one of these is the SIG or Signal LED. To take advantage of this, click (push in) the front panel knob twice. This should show you the module currently reporting its RX/TX/SIG to the front panel. Turn the knob until the E&M module is selected, then click the knob again. Now, when the radio module is transmitting or receiving audio, the LEDs on the front panel will light up. Your goal with the SIG LED is to have it flash when the radio module is receiving audio. If it is off for long periods or solidly on while the E&M device is receiving audio, adjust the E&M device's output until it flashes when there is speech. 5) Note on Audio Flow Control Settings: There are a wide variety of settings that can allow or silence incoming and outgoing audio for the E&M device. The appropriate values for these settings vary widely depending on the E&M device itself. The defaults are a good starting point. Consult the built-in help for information about each one of these settings to help properly tune them for your needs M06 GLOBAL COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY, LLC 5
