5 2 Product description The RS485 gateway is a wireless gateway between the Systemair air handling unit and wireless remote modules. The communication frequency is MHz The wireless remote modules such as: SmartDial, Input Module, Humidity sensor and the CO 2 sensor are all wirelessly connected to the RS485 gateway. None of the remote modules works without the gateway installed. Up to 10 wireless remote modules can connect to the gateway simultaneously. The RS485 gateway is intended for wall mounting either on the wall or on a wall-box. Note: No internal parameters or settings can be changed by the user. 3 Systemair AB

6 3 Guidelines for installation The signal strength is sufficient for most applications, however, wireless signals are weakened on the way from the gateway to the different wireless modules. Each building has different obstacles to be taken into consideration. Do not mount the RS485 gateway directly on the air handling unit since the sheet metal chassis can interfere with the radio communication. Ensure the best performance by keeping the following in mind for planning and installation: Min. 1 m and max. 30 m between devices in free space. All metallic parts in the building construction can weaken wireless signals. Reinforced concrete walls and floors weaken the signal strength significantly, but almost all types of construction materials reduce the signal to some degree. 4 Systemair AB

7 Note: To get a good overview of the devices in each rooms, and their placement, Systemair recommends that an installation plan is made before beginning the actual installation. 4 Interface description The gateway is sending and receiving data wirelessly to the remote modules and is wired via an RS485 bus to the air handling unit. The Man Machine Interface (MMI) for this product consists of a button and two LED indicators. One red (the lower) and one green (top) LED that indicates the status of the gateway. 5 Systemair AB

8 1. Green and Red status LED s. 2. Function button 4.1 Connections The Systemair air handling unit and the are interconnected by a cable: Maximum cable length: 50 m. Cable type: Flat 4 conductor CEC Phone cable, or equivalent. The gateway is powered by the air handling unit. 6 Systemair AB

11 4.2 Power-up After the gateway has been turned on, the green LED lights up. After 2 seconds, the gateway will go to idle mode. In idle mode, the status LED s are turned off. When the button is pushed the Active/User/Fault mode is entered. 4.3 Active/User/Fault mode In the Active/User/Fault mode, the LED s can show the following status: 9 Systemair AB

12 Indication Green LED continuously lit Green LED flashing for 3 seconds Red LED flashing Status / Function System OK. Remote module can start sending bind requests. No wireless communication between remote module and gateway or remote module not connected. Flashing red (fault). This status is repeated every few seconds. When the button is pressed and held for 10 seconds, the green LED starts flashing for 3 seconds. If the button is released within these 3 seconds, the binding mode is entered. If the button is not released within these 3 seconds, the LED goes off and the gateway will go to idle mode. 10 Systemair AB

13 If the button is not pressed for at least 10 seconds, the gateway will go to idle mode. 4.4 Binding mode In the binding mode, the remote modules contacts the gateway and requests connection. In the binding mode, the red and green LED s are alternately lit and a bind request message from a remote module can be received. If a message from a remote module is received and accepted, the gateway stays in binding mode for an additional 5 minutes. The gateway will accept additional requests from remote modules without pressing the button again. If no bind request message is received for 5 minutes, the idle mode is entered. When the button is pressed again, the Active/User/Fault mode is entered. 11 Systemair AB

14 5 Communication Interface Functions 5.1 Power-Up and Reset Operation All remote modules and digital inputs are marked as invalid after Power-Up. If a new value is received, this value is stored in the gateway. To reset the gateway to factory settings and hence clear the binding with all remote modules: Push the Function button and hold it for 30 seconds. The green LED starts flashing rapidly for 5 seconds. If the button is released within these 5 seconds the reset operation is entered. If the button is not released, the LED goes off and the gateway will go to idle mode. 12 Systemair AB

15 6 Troubleshooting Indication Gateway does not start. LED s does not light up. LED s light up. Red LED flashing. Probable cause and action Wiring problems. Check wiring. Communication problems. 1. Remote module not connected. Check AC power or batteries in remote module (depending on module type) 2. Remote module connected but red LED still flashing. Other modules not powered. Check batteries in other modules. Distance between gateway and remote modules too far. Max 30m. Revise placement of the equipment. Metallic parts or other reflecting materials in the building construction. Revise placement of the equipment. 13 Systemair AB
