1 DriveScale Overview DriveScale offers a rack scale architecture, a next generation data center infrastructure based on hardware and software interface technology that brings the advantages of proprietary scale-up infrastructure environments to the commodity scale-out world. DriveScale provides manageability, flexibility, and optimization to scale-out environments through its rack scale architecture and intelligence tools and services. One key functionality of DriveScale's next-generation scale-out data center infrastructure is the ability to disaggregate servers within clusters into pools of compute resources and storage resources and then compose those resources into logical nodes - software defined physical nodes - that are indistinguishable from standard physical rack servers to the software running on top of the servers. DriveScale provides hardware and software technology which allows the separate purchase and scaling of commodity compute and storage in the form of storage light servers and commodity JBODs full of commodity disks, and the flexible binding of storage units to compute elements in any ratio required by an application. As the applications change, these bindings can be dissolved and new bindings applied all via software control. With DriveScale s disaggregation technology, administrators avoid scale-out s rigid marriage of data drives to specific physical servers, while preserving the benefits of data locality and local disk performance that are currently observed with traditional rack server deployments in scale-out. Application stacks can be deployed without modification, onto physical infrastructure tailored for the deployment but able to be updated in software as needs change. DriveScale technology provides a large amount of visibility into the infrastructure. DriveScale uses this visibility into physical infrastructure and its dynamics to provide an integrated set of intelligence and automation tools to scale-out data center infrastructure, providing tools to simplify and optimize the infrastructure owners operations All Rights Reserved Page 1 of 7 Page 1 of 7

2 DriveScale Technology Overview DriveScale s technology consists of software in the form of DriveScale Management Servers and software agents, a hardware appliance called the DriveScale Adapter, and a cloud-based service called DriveScale Central. The DriveScale Management Server and DriveScale software agents coordinate to provide the core functionality of the DriveScale solution. The software composes compute and storage components into logical nodes via the DriveScale Adapter and 10GbE network. These logical nodes are indistinguishable both in function and performance from traditional rack servers with local disk to the operating systems and applications running on them. DriveScale software consists of a combination of software onboard the DriveScale Adapter, software agents deployed on the compute and memory servers, and software on the DriveScale Management Server [Figure 1]. Packages are available for installation in either bare metal or virtualized Linux environments. This DriveScale Management Server acts as the management brain for a DriveScale deployment domain. The DriveScale server agents deployed on compute nodes require a Linux based operating system. 3 The DriveScale Service provides environment manageability capabilities, as well as the ability to deploy DriveScale s core server composition technology. From hardware enablement in the DriveScale Adapters to the redundant deployment of DriveScale Management Servers, DriveScale s rack scale solution is enterprise ready. DriveScale s solution is architected to provide hitless upgrades, allowing applications to continue to operate during upgrade periods. DriveScale management domains spam multiple switch domains, with architectural support for deployments across hundreds of racks. From audit logs to local user authentication and basic RBAC, DriveScale provides the tools needed to integrate into an enterprise s tools and processes. The DriveScale system provides visibility into faults that have been generated in the system, as well as tools that help to diagnose common problems in a converged network deployment. User-controlled tools allow collection and export of this information. In conjunction with the cloud-based DriveScale Central service, DriveScale deployments can provide proactive diagnostic information and real-time alerts when problems are detected. Composable Infrastructure Capabilities The DriveScale Adapter together with the DriveScale software provides the functionality of the DriveScale disaggregation and server composition technology. It allows administrators to describe in software their requirements and constraints around the physical servers they need within their clusters. With this information as a guide, DriveScale composes physical storage (in the form of commodity drives in JBODs) and compute units (in the form of industry standard storage light servers) through the network and DriveScale Adapters to create physical Logical Nodes with differing ratios of compute to storage, and then places these nodes into clusters that are returned to the administrator. With this, an administrator is able to install and run software just as they would in a standard rack server environment. This service enables users to rapidly and easily reprovision and reconfigure physical server resource ratios to optimize for different and changing applications and workloads. DriveScale Server Composition Features and Benefits Feature Application transparency Benefit Logical nodes generated by DriveScale are equivalent to standard rack servers, allowing applications designed for operation in scale-out environments to run without modification. Logical server templates Logical cluster templates User defined templates describe the minimum required resources (compute, memory, storage) for a particular server type. User defined templates describe the required server types (as described in logical server templates) that combine to form logical clusters on which applications are deployed. Logical cluster instantiation Instantiation of a logical cluster template prompts the DriveScale system to select the appropriate combination of physical resources to marry that satisfy the constraints of the requested logical cluster. This reconfigures the physical resources into what appears to be a collection of standard physical rack servers that can then be used for application deployment. Logical cluster modification Instantiated clusters may be modified through the addition or removal of compute nodes or drives within the cluster. Cluster Inventory Cluster inventory is an overview that provides a snapshot of where physical resources in the system are being utilized, namely in clusters or in available resource pools. Scale-Out Manageability Capabilities The DriveScale service discovers and inventories all physical resources, their connectivity in the cluster and identifies the bandwidth and failure domains. It monitors activities in the cluster and can be used to provide actionable insight into the behavior of the cluster. Over time this service will also utilize this information to establish cluster norms, identify anomalies, and suggest remedies to problems that occur. This service is a foundational component that supports operation of the server composition technology but also provides a level of visibility into commodity components that can be difficult to obtain otherwise. DriveScale Adapter In DriveScale s rack scale architecture, industry standard disk-lite servers providing compute and memory resources are deployed under standard 10GbE network switches in the same manner they are in non-drivescale deployments. DriveScale s hardware enables server disaggregation by allowing data disks to be removed from servers and placed into commodity JBODs that are accessed over a 10GbE network. 6 The DriveScale Adapter [Figure 3] is an Ethernet to SAS bridge. Each adapter implements two 10GbE SFP+ ports and two 12Gb Mini-SAS HD interfaces. Four adapters are housed in a 1RU chassis. Each Adapter chassis can serve as the basis of a fully redundant deployment across both power and connectivity3 Table 3.
