DriveScale Administration Guide version 1.3 Overview This Administrator's Guide covers information on managing your DriveScale domains, after you have installed the DriveScale software components. It also Provides an introduction to the DriveScale system. It is recommended that you read the introduction to the Administrator's Guide before you begin to install and configure the DriveScale components. Diagram of major components The major components of the DriveScale solution include DriveScale Central (DSC), the customer's data center(s), the customer's DriveScale Management Domains (DMDs), and the constituent components of a customer's DMD -- i.e., one (or several) DriveScale Management Server (DMS), DriveScale Adapters (DSAs) (which come four to a DSA Chassis), one (or more) JBODs (connected to the DSA nodes), and some number of worker nodes (i.e., Servers). Deployment Model 1

Main Components DriveScale Central (DSC) DriveScale Central is a web-based user interface to the DriveScale cloud that performs DriveScale account management. DSC is where you download the keys to enable installation of the DriveScale software, and then set up your DriveScale Management Domain(s) (DMDs). This is where you create your domain, select and configure the DMS nodes for the domain, and select a chassis (with its associated DriveScale Adapters, DSAs) for the domain. These functions are covered in the DriveScale Installation Guide. DriveScale Management Server (DMS) DriveScale Management Server is the server that runs the bundle of software (service) that manages a set of Physical Resources to enable the DriveScale services. DriveScale Manager is the web-based user interface to the DMS. DriveScale Adapter (DSA) DriveScale Adapter a 1RU Ethernet to SAS adapter serving as a bridge between 10 Gbps Ethernet connecting compute resources to JBODs full of commodity disks DriveScale Physical Components The DriveScale solution utilizes off the shelf servers, JBOD enclosures, and 10 GbE SFP+ switching infrastructure. Recommendations for these components are as follows: Network switching The DriveScale solution requires 10 GbE SFP+ network switching, deployed in a single switch or dual switch deployment, with link aggregation recommended in the dual switch case. There should be sufficient ports on the switches for connectivity to all servers and DriveScale adapters that are intended to be within a bandwidth domain. Servers There are two different kinds of server nodes required for DriveScale: 2

DriveScale Management Servers (1 or 3 physical or virtual machines per DriveScale management domain): Minimum 2 x E v3 or v4 CPUs Minimum 1 GB memory above minimum OS requirements, with each managed device (DriveScale Adapter, worker nodes, and disks) in the environment requiring an additional 4MB of memory. For example, an environment with a total of devices would require 49 GB of memory dedicated internal hard drives., One must be dedicated for ZooKeeper transaction logs if the cluster is of any significant size. Minimum of two 1GbE network ports, with 2 x 10 GbE SFP+ NIC recommended Worker nodes (these are the servers that provide the compute resources for use in server and cluster construction): Recommended 2 x E v3 or v4 CPUs Recommended 128 GB memory Recommended 1 or 2 disks for operating system, boot drive, etc. (additional disks required for applications will be served via DriveScale) 2 x 10 GbE SFP+ NIC JBODs JBODs (Just a Bunch of Disks) are a bunch of commodity disks not in a raid configuration. JBOD enclosures provide the storage resources for use in server and cluster construction. We do require that: JBOD enclosures do not include compute elements. The JBOD enclosures are 6 Gbps or 12 Gbps SAS. For each listed model, DriveScale requires that hard disks used within the JBOD be dual ported SAS, and, in the case where the JBOD vendor has a disk hardware compatibility list, that the disks appear on the vendor s compatibility list. Tested models are listed below. Other models may interoperate and DriveScale will work with users when possible to verify other platforms meeting the above requirements: Dell MD3060e (and while not tested, DriveScale expects the MD1280 to work without issue as well) Foxconn Carrier Newisys NDS 4600 Quanta QuantaVault JB4602 SuperMicro SM CSE-946ED-R2KJBOD 3

The DriveScale Central Home page The DriveScale Central home page provides an overview of the elements managed by DSC. In addition to showing the steps you have completed to set up your DriveScale cloud, it shows the following summary information: The number of DSC users that have been added, and the percentage of those users that are currently active. The number of domains that currently exist in this cloud, and the number that have been configured. The number of deployment files that are available for downloading. These are discussed in the DriveScale Installation Guide. The number of log files that have been created in the selected time period, with the minimum and maximun sizes of these files. These are described below. DriveScale Help The help link at the bottom on the left hand navigation pane will bring up the DriveScale Knowledge Base, which includes documentation for the DSC and DMD, including Installation, Administration and User Guides. It also includes a description of the Alerts that can be generated from within the system. User Management 4

This section covers User management (adding and deleting users/accounts) for both DSC and DMS. This section assumes you have installed and configured your DMD(s) following the instructions in the DriveScale Installation Guide. Managing DriveScale Central (DSC) Users As a DriveScale Administrator, you can add and delete DSC accounts and configure the user access rights for these accounts. These are performed under the Users tab of the DriveScale Central UI. You must have Editor permissions in order to perform these functions. Users with View-only permissions will not be able to perform the functions described here. Adding or removing a DSC user To add a user: 1. Log in to the DSC: 2. Go to the Users tab 3. Click the Create User button at the upper right. 5

4. Fill in the requested information. For the group, you can choose Editor or Viewer. An Editor can add and change users and add, change, and delete domains. A Viewer has view only access. Click the Active checkbox to enable this user to have access to DSC. If unchecked, the user account will exist, but the user will not be able to log in. You must set a password for the user initially, but the user can change their own password once they have logged in. 5. Click Create to create the new user. Changing a DSC user's access rights 1. Go to the Users tab 2. Select the user, which displays the user profile. 3. In the Group field, pull down and change the group from Editor to Viewer or vice versa. 4. Click Update to update the user information. Deactivating a DSC user To remove a user's login privileges without deleting the user's account, you can deactivate the user. 6

1. Go to the Users tab 2. Select the user, which displays the user profile. 3. Click the Deactivate User button at the top of the page. 4. Click Update to update the user information. Managing DriveScale Management Server (DMS) Users The DriveScale Management Server manages the resources in your own DriveScale Management Domain. DriveScale Manager provides the User Interface into the DMS for a single domain, where you can define logical node types and logical clusters using templates, and can instantiate a cluster based on a logical cluster you have created. These functions are described in the DriveScale User's Guide. If you are using Internal authentication (see link here), as a DriveScale Administrator you can add and delete DMS accounts and configure the user access rights for these accounts. If you are using LDAP or Kerberos authentication, you do not need to add user accounts users will be authenticated by the appropriate back-end and automatically given view-only access to the DMS. However, if you want to provide the user access to you can edit the user's account to add groups to grant additional access. These are performed under the Settings link in the left-hand navigation panel. Adding or removing a DMS user This applies primarily if you are using Internal authentication. In that case, you must create the user before he/she can access the DMS. If you are using LDAP or Kerberos authentication, user accounts are created automatically when they first log in. (With LDAP or Kerberos authentication, deleting an account will not prevent that user from logging in again.) To add a user (internal authentication): 1. Log in to the DMS for your domain: for example, 2. Expand the Settings link and go to Users. 3. Click the Create User button at the upper right. 7

4. Fill in the requested information. To assign access rights for this user, click in the Groups field to display a list of the available groups. Access rights are configured based on the groups to which the user belongs. Select the appropriate groups from this list. You can add multiple groups as needed. A number of predefined groups with various levels of access permissions are provided, as listed in the table below. See "Configuring Groups for Access Control" for information explaining how to set up new groups if needed. You must set a password for the user initially, but the user can change their own password once they have logged in. 5. Click Create to create the new user. To remove a user: 1. Go to the Users page under Settings. 2. Select the user you want to delete. 3. Click the Delete button at the upper right. 4. There will be a confirmation dialog box; click Delete to delete the user. Note that if the user is being authenticated externally (with LDAP or Kerberos), the user account will be recreated the next time the user logs in. Changing a DMS user's access rights Access rights are conferred based on the groups of which the user is a member. Regardless of the authentication method, you can modify a user's access rights via the group mechanism. 8

DriveScale provides a predefined set of groups you can select. 1. Go to the Users tab 2. Select the user, which displays the user profile. The groups of which this user is a member are shown in the Groups field. 3. To remove a group, click the X at the left of the group name. 4. To add a group, click in the Groups field and select the group. 5. Click Update to update the user information. The predefined groups are: Group name Access rights per this group viewergrp Can view in Explorer, Composer and change own password. clustermgrgrp Can create node templates, cluster templates and clusters. admingrp Can do everything. clusterusergrp Can create clusters based on pre-defined cluster templates but cannot create the templates. Configuring Groups for Access Control A Group is a named set of rules that enable actions on API paths. If the predefined groups do not meet your needs, you can create additional groups. To create a group: 1. Under Settings, click Groups. 2. Click Create Group. 3. Provide a name for the group. 4. Create rules for the group as follows: 9

5. In the first field (1), select the action: DELETE, GET, PATCH, POST, PUT. 6. In the second field (2), type the path that should be allowed, starting with /ds/ 7. Click Add rule. 8. To remove rules from the list, select the rules (via checkbox) and click Remove selected rules. 9. After you have added all the rules you want, click Create. Returning to "setup mode" If you need to recreate the Admin user and password, you can return to Setup mode to do this. All you other settings and configuration will be preserved. 1. Execute /opt/drivescale/bin/setup-mode on the master DMS server to enable the setup mode. 2. In your browser, navigate to for example, 3. Fill in the all fields, and click on the Create admin user button Manual DMD Management 10

Adding or removing hardware in an existing DMD Adding a DSA To connect a new DSA in the DMD network, follow the steps below. These are also covered in the "Set up the DSAs" section of the DriveScale Installation Guide. 1. Log into one of the DMS machines on their management IP. 2. Set up the DMD configuration for each DSA using the same config file (config.mydomain in this example) as was used in the DMSes. This is done via the /opt/drivescale/bin/dsa command installed on each DMS. The default DSA username and password is admin/admin. On any of the DMS systems, you can run: for dsa in $adapters do /opt/drivescale/bin/dsa -u admin -p admin -a $dsa config -f /tmp/config.mydomain done Note that the current configuration of a DSA can be checked by running the dsadrivescaleconf.sh script without the put and file arguments. 3. Update the DSAs to the latest software. Follow the instructions in the section "Software Updates" below. Adding a new Server (worker node) Connect the new server to the DMD network. Follow the steps indicated in the "Set up the Server" section of the DriveScale Installation Guide. Removing a DSA 1. Determine the clusters that include drives served by the DSA. 2. Suspend or delete the clusters served by the adapter. 3. Stop the service on the adapter by using the dsa command. For example: 12

/opt/drivescale/bin/dsa -u admin -p <Admin PW> -a <Adapter IP address> service stop 4. Login to your DMS, go to the Explorer and navigate to Physical->Details->DSA 5. Click on the DSA to select. 6. Click the Delete button at the top right hand side of the page to delete the DSA. Removing a Server 1. Suspend or Delete the cluster that is using the server. 2. DMS communicates with this interface for configuring the adapter. One mgmt interface Management interface for the adapter. This interface is used by the adapter for downloading the updates and sending information to the DMS. Two 10g interfaces These are data interfaces. They are used for connecting compute resources to the JBODs DriveScale Adapter (DSA) Network interfaces can be configured from DMS using the DSA Utility tool (details in the next section). Setting a static IP address The 10g network interfaces are bonded and set to DHCP by default. To set a static IP address on the bonded interface, using the following command as an example: 14

address> net modify -i 10gBond -static netmask gateway (For addr, netmask, and gateway substitute the appropriate IP addresses for your network.) Disabling the 10g Bond The 10g Bond can be disabled using following command: address> net modify -i 10gBond -d Note: the DSA's default user name and password is admin. The adapter password can be (and should be) changed using /opt/drivescale/bin/dsa-password Complete usage of the DSA Utility net command is found below, at DSA Utility, net command. The DriveScale Adapter Utility Tool The DriveScale Adapter utility tool is a command line tool that enables you to interact with the DriveScale Adapter. It can perform and handle various tasks with appropriate arguments and commands. Some of the major functionalities of this tool are: Creating and modifying user accounts which will be used to access the DriveScale Adapter Updating the DriveScale Adapter software Fetch the adapter logs Start/Stop the DriveScale service Change the DriveScale configuration file Configure the DriveScale Adapter network The form of the command is: dsa -u <user> -p <password> -a <adapter IP> [-v] {command} {sub-command} [optional arguments] 15
