Distribution of MSP-MK1.2 module s outputs. 3 Preparing for operation 3.1 Installation Before installing the modem, you need to first insert the SIM card in the opening on the base of the unit. Using the six-element DIP-SWITCH, select the operation mode for the voltage-digital inputs. In the ON, position, the appropriate input operates in the digital input mode, and in the OFF position operates as a 0-30 V voltage input. MSP-MK modules are to be mounted on a 35 mm DIN bus and connected to each other before connecting the mains power supply. Table 1. describes acceptable connection alternatives. The mutual orientation of the devices (order of mounting on the DIN bus) does not matter. Note: Where two devices are connected as one unit, the power supply should be connected only to the MSP-MK1.0 or MSP-MK1.0i module. 3.2 Start-up procedure The following procedure must be followed each time the device is powered up or reset Servicing mode Directly after powering up or resetting the device, it remains in the servicing mode for 15 seconds. During this time - if necessary one may connect the Configurator software to it via (exclusively) the COM4 port. It should be remembered that COM4 is an RS-485 port. The connection parameters in servicing mode are shown in Table 5 (there is no need to enter these as the factory installed software is supplied with these settings). During this time, one cannot communicate with the unit by any other communication channel Document version: IO/MSP-MK/EN/r1
Integrotech sp. z o.o / 17 - IO/MSP-MK/EN/r1 Parameter Value In the servicing mode Baud rate Number of data bits 8 Number of stop bits 1 Parity control none Table 5. COM4 port s settings in the servicing mode Readiness to communicate in the servicing mode is signalled by a blinking S1-S6, SYS and LAN diode with a frequency of about 1 Hz. After making the connection and for instance reading the configuration, the frequency of the blinking LED diodes is increased to 10 Hz. The device remains in this mode until: the user resets the device by pressing the appropriate button in the Configurator software, or communication on COM4 port is lost for 20 minutes 20 minutes after the last configuration read or write command, the device resets itself. This means that in servicing mode, each configuration read or write command sets back the device s automatic reset by 20 minutes. For the new settings to apply, one must reset the device using the Configurator software (see Chapter 4) or by cutting off the power supply. When not in servicing mode, i.e. under the device s normal operating conditions, configuration of the device is only possible when connecting via LAN or GPRS. Only in the servicing mode with the MSP- MK1.0 unit can one communicate via a serial port - and only via COM Initialising communication After leaving the servicing mode, the device performs diagnostics of the LAN and GPRS connection, signalling any problems found acoustically. Each tone is repeated three times, enabling it to be clearly identified. In the event of communication problems, the whole procedure is repeated three times, which is why entering a wrong PIN will block the SIM card following the start-up procedure (there will be three successive attempts to unlock the SIM card using the wrong PIN). In such cases one must unlock the SIM card, for example by using a compatible mobile phone Initialising LAN In this step of the start-up procedure the device checks whether any of the auxiliary modules (MSP- MK1.1 switch or MSP-MK1.2 opto) have been connected to the internal bus. If an auxiliary module is detected, this is followed by disconnection of the LAN port (RJ-45) on the front of the MSP-MK1.0 unit (connection to the switch is effected using a Fast Ethernet link, set up in the internal bus). If nothing is connected to the LAN port, an appropriate audible signal is generated (see Table 6) Initialising GPRS The device then connects to the GSM network and any errors are signalled by audible notifications, as shown in Table 6 on page 12 (below). If this fails, the procedure is repeated three times, which is why entering the wrong PIN causes three attempts to open the SIM card with the wrong code, which will lead to it being blocked. The SIM card can be unlocked, for example by using a compatible mobile phone and entering PUK. The procedure for unlocking the SIM card is beyond the scope of this document. 12 IO/MSP-MK/EN/r1-12 / 17 - Integrotech sp. z o.o. 3.3 Acoustic diagnostics during the start-up procedure Table 6 lists all audible notifications that may occur, along with the basic troubleshooting procedure. One should read this list before attempting to connect the unit. Problem Number of acoustic signals Lack of communication on both communication channels No communication for a specified period - the device will reset itself Problems with the LAN connection Ethernet cable disconnected 6 14 Problems with the GPRS modem The modem does not 4 respond Remedy This problem occurs whenever during the time specified by the user (a maximum 255 minutes) there is no communication on either channel (LAN and GPRS). The solution is one of the following: increase the time allowed for lack of communication (up to 255 minutes) force periodic communication via LAN or GPRS for a period less than the specified time without communication if the device is to be only occasionally queried this can safely be ignored The solution is one of the following: connect network cable to the LAN port Connect the MSP-MK1.1 or MSP-MK1.2 module ignore if the LAN port is not going to be used Contact your service provider. This may also mean Invalid PIN (follow procedure below) Invalid PIN 8 Entering an incorrect PIN locks the SIM card! Disconnect the power supply, remove the SIM card and unlock it using PUK in another device (e.g. mobile phone). Then set a PIN and enter it in the device using the Configurator software. 1. Check the antenna connection. GPRS connection 2. Check GPRS network coverage at installation site. 10 problem 3. Use an antenna with a higher gain (e.g. external or directional antenna) 1. Insert the SIM card. No SIM card Clean the contacts of the SIM card. 3. Change the SIM card. No PPP connection Wait a few seconds and try again Problem negocjacji PPP If the problem persists, contact your service provider Table 6. Acoustic diagnostics for the MSP-MK1.0 device It should be remembered that each of the signals is repeated three times in order to avoid confusion Document version: IO/MSP-MK/EN/r1
Integrotech sp. z o.o / 17 - IO/MSP-MK/EN/r1 4 Description of the Configurator software The MSP-MK1.0 Configurator software is used to set the following aspects of the device s operation: 1. maximum time without communication 2. GPRS network parameters (APN, user name log in, password, PIN) 3. LAN network parameters (IPv4 address, subnet mask, gateway, and device s MAC address) 4. operating modes of COM1-COM3 ports (RS-232/422/485) 5. the communication parameters of the COM1-COM4 ports (speed, parity, number of data bits and stop bits) 6. TCP ports on which LAN and GPRS interfaces are listening and where routing to communication channels takes place (COM1-COM4). Figure 4 presents the appearance of the Configurator software window: Figure 4. Main window of the Configurator application 4.1 Connection with the device To connect to the device in order to configure it, select the communication medium, and then click on "Connect". During normal operation, the device may only be accessed via the LAN or WAN (GPRS) port. In the servicing mode the device may only be accessed via the COM4 (RS-485) communications port. Wersja dokumentu: IO/MSP-MK/EN/r
IO/MSP-MK/EN/r1-14 / 17 - Integrotech sp. z o.o. To select a communication medium, close the connection button (if this is open) and then click on the button to open the window for selecting a communication medium. In this window, you can choose a connection via a serial port - if this option is selected, from the list next to it one must select to which port of the PC the device s COM4 is connected - this option only works in the servicing mode. Another option, intended for normal operation is TCP connection to port In the IP Address field, enter one of the two IP addresses that have been assigned to the device s interfaces - or the address set as the LAN address, or the address assigned by the GPRS network, in accordance with the agreement with the network operator. Figure 5 presents the appearance of the window for selection of the communication medium. Figure 5. Communication medium selection window It should be remembered that any configuration action should begin by reading the device s settings by means of the Read button on the toolbar. After making changes, these should be entered in the device using the Save button. For the changes to take effect, reset the unit (using the Reset button or by cutting off the power supply. 4.2 Maximum time of communication failure In the WatchDog section, one should specify the time (in minutes) after which the device will be reset, if there should be no communication on any of the (GPRS or LAN) ports. In the text field one can enter any integer value from 1-255, which corresponds to the time from 1 minute to 4 hours and 15 minutes. WatchDog enables one to re-establish connection to the device, which for any reason ceases to communicate. After counting off the specified number of minutes, in the absence of any communication, the device will emit six beeps three times (see Table 6. ) and reset itself. Figure 6. Setting the time of the automatic reset Document version: IO/MSP-MK/EN/r1
Integrotech sp. z o.o / 17 - IO/MSP-MK/EN/r1 This time is based on normal operating conditions; it should be remembered that in the servicing mode, the device will always reset itself after 20 minutes of no communication. 4.3 Modem settings In this section (see Figure 7), one should quote the GPRS parameters for the GSM network: APN (Access Point Name), user name log in and password for access to the network. These values are specified for a given GSM network and provided by your service provider (network operator). In the last field in this section, enter the SIM card s PIN. Note: entering a wrong PIN and turning on the power will block the SIM card! After connecting to the Internet, the device will be assigned an IP address by the network operator. To ensure uninterrupted communication, this address should be constant, i.e., it should not change after resetting of the device. Ensured stability of the IP address is a provision of the contract with the GSM network operator. Figure 7. GPRS settings Figure 8. LAN settings 4.4 LAN network settings In this section (see Figure 8) one must quote the IPv4 protocol parameters for the LAN interface the IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway address. Optionally, one may also change the address of the second layer (MAC). 4.5 Routing TCP ports to COM communication ports In the sections marked GPRS TCP-X port and TCP LAN-X port, where X is the letter A, B, C or D, assignment of a specific TCP port of a given interface to a specified communications port is configured. Any number of TCP ports from each network can be assigned to any communication port (COM1-COM4). Figure 9. GPRS interface s TCP port settings Figure 10. LAN interface s TCP port settings This means that devices connected to a particular communications port may be simultaneously accessible for up to eight clients - controllers, systems, operators etc. In extreme cases a single device may be queried at the same time by eight independent clients (for versions of the MSP-MK1.0 device, subject to the reservations discussed in Chapter 6). Wersja dokumentu: IO/MSP-MK/EN/r
IO/MSP-MK/EN/r1-16 / 17 - Integrotech sp. z o.o. 4.6 Settings for COM ports In the group designated COM1-COM4, one may set operating parameters for a given communication port, such as: bitrate (4800, 9600, 19200, 38400, and bits per second) number of data bits (5, 6, 7 or 8), parity control (even, mark, none, odd, or space), number of stop bits (1, 1.5 or 2). In addition, for ports COM1-COM3 one may select the port s operating mode (RS-232/422/485). The COM4 port always operates in the RS-485 mode. 5 Routing between communication ports (MSP-MK1.0i only) In the MSP-MK1.0i version of the device COM3 cannot be used by the ports server and the TCP ports LAN-C and GPRS-C are also not available. All traffic from COM3 is routed to COM4. Routing between ports COM3 and COM4 is permanent and cannot be in any way modified by the user. In addition to the above, the operation of COM4 is the same as in the basic version (MSP-MK1.0) it is available as a routing destination for both LAN and GPRS TCP ports, and also its functions in the servicing mode are the same. Given the above, it should be noted that up to seven clients may use the MSP-MK1.0i device simultaneously (three clients on LAN ports, three on GPRS ports and one on the COM3 port). 6 Optimising multiple access Thanks to the use of intelligent query processing algorithms, the MSP-MK1.0 and MSP-MK1.0i units provide a good approximation of true simultaneous operation. It should be noted however, that communication of many clients with a target device using a single serial link is not and cannot be implemented at the same time. This is due to the nature of these connections, dedicated to the implementation of arrangements in a point-to-point topology (such as RS-232) or a bus topology with a single master unit and many slave units such as RS-485. Emulating simultaneity is possible thanks to among other things buffering and queuing of queries and responses. Both buffering and queuing add a slight (though non-zero) time overhead to all operations. Which is why in designing a solution where many clients connect via a single serial communication channel with one device, one must expect delays in communication that will occur in connection with the need to wait for the processing of queries originating from other clients to be completed. When planning a system of the following type: many clients MSP-MK1.0 target device, one should seek to minimize the waiting time for a response by eliminating all potential sources of time overheads in the communication process so that these do not exceed the response timeout permitted by the master unit. The following sections discuss recommended strategies for this purpose Document version: IO/MSP-MK/EN/r1
Integrotech sp. z o.o / 17 - IO/MSP-MK/EN/r1 6.1 Multiplying connections to the target device First of all, one must make sure to use the maximum number of available communication channels between the target device and the MSP-MK1.0. The use of many channels shortens the queries queue, and consequently, the waiting time for a response over a given channel. It also allows for prioritising of clients - for example, the reserving of a dedicated channel for a critical client. An additional advantage gained from multiplication of communication channels is of course increased traffic assurance and the minimising of the effects of potential breakdowns. Whenever possible, one should use the maximum available number of ports. 6.2 Maximising the communication speed Another important factor is selection of the maximum possible communication speed of the target device with the MSP-MK1.0 unit. As a result, the time for transmission of queries and responses will be reduced to a minimum. The speed of communication should each time be adapted to the length of the line connecting the target device to the MSP-MK1.0 unit and should take into consideration the occurrence of other factors that may adversely affect the quality of the connection. The manufacturer recommends confirming proper communication by simulating work under field conditions before handing over the installation. 6.3 Adjusting permissible response timeouts Having taken care of the above, one may also increase the waiting times for responses by master units. Waiting times should be chosen experimentally, confirming correct selection by means of appropriately comprehensive tests.
