Page Check the parts in your PNOscan II kit against the parts list before beginning this installation. If you are missing any items, call your dealer. Check the recommended tool list to be sure your equipped for the installation. 2 - Remove the fall board, left and right key blocks and key slip. 3 - Remove the key action from the piano case. TIP! - Close the piano lid and use a clean furniture pad to provide a place to set the key action when removed as it's possible you will need to remove the action several times during the installation. 4 - Locate the front / back position for the key scan rail. Aprox 3/16" forward of the back side of sharp keys and strike a mark.

Page 2 Use a straight edge set against the back of the sharp keys. Measure forward approx 3/16" at key #1 and key #88, placing a pencile mark on both keys. Transfer the marks down to the key frame as well. These marks will later be referenced to the key scan assembly for front/back location. Mark the key Mark the key frame

Page Using a small square, transfer the marks on the keys down to the key frame where the scan rail will mount. You will use these marks to align the key sensor assembly onto the key frame later in the installation. 3/16" forward of the back edge of sharps. 6 - Assemble the 4 metal key scan track sections. Notice that one joint pin protrudes slightly further than the other allowing for easy of alignment into the joining sections. Slide all sections firmly together. A strip of the the silver metalized tape can be bridged across the joint at the underside of the track to keep the joints tight together.

Page Assemble the key scan circuit boards into the aluminum chassis. Circuit board orientation is determined by the cable connectors. There are 3 connectors on each key strip. Place the strips so that the connector closest to the end of the circuit board faces left. The remaining 3 circuit boards need to be placed with the same orientation. Toward bass end Key scan circuit board connector orientation. Front of piano 8 - With the key scan strip assembled, you can set the assembly aside and prepare the key action for installation by removing the action stack from the key frame to allow removal of the keys which you will do a bit later. 9 - You can now establish the proper spacing of scan boards for your particular piano. The process we will use to establish this L/R alignment will also include a initial bench type functional test which verifies proper system function, as it is ideal to test the components prior to installation. Using one of the 12" flex cables from the kit, make the connection to the right end circuit board connector which sets back from the end of the circuit board several inches. Support the cable close to it's end, carefully align the cable with the opening in the connector and slide the cable in until it stops. Close the lock if present.

Page With the 12" cable attached and exiting toward the treble end of the piano you can make the remaining three cable connections between key scan boards. NOTE: If you have type 1 key scan boards there will be a lock type connector. The lock must be fully pulled out prior to inserting cable. Once cable is inserted the lock must be pushed in toward connector fully. NOTE: Use care not to force the connector latches when unlocking or locking them as it is possible to break them. Non-lock type connector. Only requires full insertion of cable. Lock type connector. Requires the lock to be pulled out for insertion and pushed in to make and retain cable connection. Insert one end of the cable into a connector and then gently pull the cable to the length needed to meet the other connector. When stretching the cable, support the connected end to keep it from pulling out of the connector Pull the cable from the opposite end and not from the middle of the cable to avoid distorting the cable.

Page At this point you can lay the key scan assembly across the width of the keys relative to the front / back location you established earlier. Use the pencil marks you made on the key frame as reference. Position the aluminum track so that there is equal amounts overhanging or under hanging the keyboard. Use a couple pieces of masking tape to hold this position. Tape to temporarily hold the track assembly in place during circuit board alignment. Soft pedal board TUSB Interface 12 - Make temporary connections between the TUSB interface and the soft pedal board. Also connect the 12" cable from the key strip to the soft pedal board at the keyboard port. (marked Key Scan) Connect the AC adaptor to the TUSB interface. When the AC adaptor is plugged into an AC outlet, the PNOscanII system should power on. You will notice various LED lights blinking. As an initial system test you can place your finger over and in close proximity to the individual key sensors on the key scan board. As sensors are activated you will see a corresponding flicker of the lighted FUNCTION button on the TUSB as well as the green LED lights on the key scan strip.

Page 7 The reason for making these connection temporarily is two fold. First it allows the system to be verified functionally. In the event there was shipping damage or some other issue, you will find it now instead of after the system is screwed in place. Secondly, there is a green LED light on each 22 note key sensor strip which is easily visible when powered on and they will aid you in the mechanical alignment of the strips to the keys. These green LED lights show activity as MIDI data flows through the system. It can also indicate when the system is in mute mode by a single blink once per second. The placement of the lights is in a very specific location of the circuit board. You can use these lights to help locate correct left / right adjustment. When the key strips are in proper alignment with the piano keys you will have an LED visible between key's 11-12, 33-34, and Once installed this can be seen when looking down through the spaces between the keys. Key motion sensor 22 per board Green LED 4 locations across 88 notes

Page 8 Key sensor aligned with the center of a key. NOTE: It is not likely all sensors will align at the exact center of the keys. Therefore alignment must be averaged across groups of 22 notes. The green LED should always end up very close to it's corresponding key gap Starting on the bass end of the keyboard visually align the individual sensors with each key, keeping the green LED aligned with the gap between key 11 and 12. As you get each 22 note section into alignment, lock that section in place with a piece of the silver foil tape provided in the kit. Proceed to align the remaining sections. Tip:Use a fine tipped marker and place a dot or mark on the metal track where the green LED is located for future reference With the key sensor strip now properly scaled to the key spacing and locked in place with tape, you can unplug the cables from the TUSB interface and soft pedal board, leaving the cables connected on the key sensor strip. Now remove the key sensor strip assembly from the keyboard and set it aside for now. Set the assembly in a safe place and setting flat. To avoid knocking the boards out of alignment do not set end wise Use a straight edge and align it with the 2 marks you made on key 1 and key 88. Use a pencil and strike a light line across all 88 keys. You can now begin removing the keys from the key frame. Leave keys 1, 11,12, 33,34,55,56,77,78 and 88 in place Slide the key sensor strip under the remaining keys and align the sensors with the 2 marks you made on the key frame earlier. Now identify 4 or 5 mounting locations along the key frame where you can attach the key sensor track. You should use a minimum of 4 mounting points although 5 points will provide a more stable installation.

Page 9 Obtain the mounts from the kit and set them under the track at the desired mounting locations. Align the metal track into the recess in the plastic track mounts and attach the mounts to the track using the 4-40 x 1/4 pan head screws. Once the mounts are secured to the track, align the assembly left to right using the green LED's at the 4 points across the remaining keys. When both front to back and right to left alignment is set, use the provided 4 x3/4" screws to fasten the mounts to the wood key frame. Use the included shims to establish the correct height. More shims can be added under the rear of the mounts to adjust the angle of the sensors to match the key angle. The shims are added after you have the key scan assembly fastened into the piano. Loosen the #4 x 3/4" mounting screws and add the necessary shims as you establish the required height measurements across the keyboard. Metal track attached to the plastic mounts. Height adjustment shims 17 - With the key scan assembly located and mounted you can set the height. It is very important for good performance that the distance between the sensors and the key bottoms is set correctly. Depending on the model of piano you will find that the sharp keys generally dip lower than the natural keys. For this reason we will use the sharp keys as our point of reference for our height adjustment. By fully dipping the sharp keys at the points where keys remain installed and measuring the gap between the sensor and sharp key bottoms you can establish the vertical setting of the scan assembly. The gap needs to be between 1/16" and 7/32". Use feeler gauges or a known thickness of cardboard. The typical credit card is.030' or should be considered the smallest gap you would allow. 3 credit cards stacked would create the ideal gap. The typical business card would create only one fourth of the minimum required gap When pressing a key for measurement use a medium force to ensure you are pushing into the felt dip washer. Use care when establishing this vertical setting that the key cannot strike any part of the scan rail assembly. The most likely place this can happen is at the connectors which are 3 places on each 22 note section. In many cases adding more shim to the back side of the scan rail mounts and less to the front during height setting, will help achieve a good gap distance while avoiding contact with the rail assembly. In rare cases you may need to notch the bottom of the key in the connector areas to eliminate contact. This must be considered for allowance of action wear in which will cause the keys to dip deeper after break-in.

Page Once the height of the scan rail assembly is fixed you will need to adjust the interconnecting cables. It is necessary to take any slack out of the 3 wave cables which are connecting key scan circuit boards to avoid contact with the keys. These cables are designed to allow length adjustment to compensate for variation in distance between circuit boards. After installation there can be humps in the cables. These upward humps are easily removed by gently squeezing a wave at it's base. Typical hump after connections are made between key scan circuit boards. This hump will interfere with the keys and cause mechanical noise when keys are depressed. Use blunt nose tweezers to squeeze together. Note how flat the cable lays when squeezed. Squeezing the one side at the base of a wave will cause the cable to bend the opposite direction. Squeezing in the middle of a wave will keep the cable straight. Once the cables are properly tightened and adjusted they should be laying flat against the circuit board. If you have problems getting the cables to lay completely flat you can use a thin piece of Scotch double sided tape or a single drop of super glue under 1 wave of the cable near the middle of the cable. In most cases this is not necessary.

Page Prepare the 12" cable tail exiting with an immediate 90 deg fold pointing frontward and then wrapping down and around the front edge of the track. Continue routing under the track followed by an immediate 90 deg bend pointing right. Once the cable is positioned use a couple pieces of tape to hold in place. This orients the cable in the proper direction and keeps the cable clear of key's and sensors. Cable folded and routed under track With the key sensor rail adjusted and secured you can start placing the piano keys back onto the key frame. Although it is not mandatory, for optimum performance darken the sides of all keys to reduce light reflections. Centered on the line you scribed on the keys, create a 1" long x 1/2" high fill using a extra large permanent marker or paint pen. Use care not to get paint on the bottom of the keys and not to color too high up the key as to make it viable when adjacent keys are depressed. Be sure to remove and color the sides of the 10 keys originally left in place. Darkening both sides of each key.

Page With all keys darkened and reinstalled onto the frame, the action stack can be placed back on the key frame. Place the key/action assembly back into the piano case. We will now decide on a location to install the soft pedal board. This circuit board has 2 functions. It actually contains the sensors that read the soft shift movement of the action and provides a single point for all cable connections. Install the soft pedal circuit board by first mounting the circuit board to the plastic chassis using the included #4x40 panhead screw. This is a good point to connect all cables to the soft pedal board. The standard install includes a 12" cable connected to the Key Scan port, A 20" cable connected to the Sust Port and a 38" wide cable connected to the IN port. Making these connections prior to mounting the soft pedal board makes cable connection easier. The working distance for this sensor is about 1/2". In most cases you can find a place on the side wall of the piano where the movement of the main action frame can be captured. A grand key/action generally moves about 1/4" or less. With the action in the piano, find a place to screw the soft pedal chassis where it will face a flat area of the action frame. You may need to add a block of wood to space the sensor out to achieve a distance of 1/2" to 5/8" with the action in it's rest position. Once you have selected a location based on the said parameters, remove the key/action from the piano and proceed to install the soft pedal assembly. Soft pedal with cables connected At this point a location where the TUSB interface will be installed. There are basically two schools of thought when it comes to pianos and technology. Place the user interface "buttons and lights" where they are easy to access or place them where it can't be seen. This choice should be left to the user as they must live with the outcome. We will however discuss cable routing respective to both. If the TUSB is located with ease of access in mind this generally means you will mount it under the keybed and held back from the edge an inch or so. When using this method a 3/4" hole will need drilled down through the bed. The hole should be near the soft pedal board and positioned so there is no interference between the hole, keyblock, piano leg or key frame. If the piano has a Pianomation player system installed you can most likely use the solenoid slot for cable routing as seen in the above image. Mount the TUSB interface at the desired location using 2 6x1/2" panhead screws. Route the 38" wide flex cable into the TUSB port which is named "Primary Port". Use the plastic wave clamps to secure the cable along it's routing. Locate the 5 volt AC wall adaptor and route the cable to the TUSB box. Select a location where the AC pack can be connected to a 120 volt power source. Typically a AC power outlet strip will be mounted on the under side of the piano for powering accessories.

Page Assemble the sustain sensor circuit board onto the plastic chassis. Start by weaving the 20" cable through the 3 strain relief slots in the sustain chassis as shown in figure A. Once the cable is threaded through the slots, push the slack out and secure the sensor board with a #4x1/4" screw. Shown figure B. A B Attach the "L" mounting bracket to the sustain chassis using a #4 x 1/4" screw. (Figure C). This bracket can be oriented onto the chassis at various angles as needed. Apply the self adhesive tab onto the damper tray to create a flexible overhang for the sustain sensor to read. Mount the sustain sensor by screwing the L bracket to the belly rail or rear timber. Use the area to the right of the damper wire assembly to attach the bracket with a #6 x 1/2" screw. C D Flexible Tab The sustain sensor works by sensing the proximity of the tab as it moves toward the sensor. Adjust the height of the sensor assembly so than when the damper tray is in the full up position, the tab is about 1/16" away from the sensor. Typically the gap between sensor and tab is about 1/2" when the damper tray is at rest. The flexibility of the rubber tab prevents damage or misalignment of the sensor should the tray travel further than predicted and actually contacts the sensor. This could happen should someone adjust the sustain pedal mechanism after the installation is completed. The sustain sensor should continue to work under these circumstances. It is strongly recommended that the rubber tab is used for this reason.

Page At this point the key scan assembly should be installed under the keys, mechanically aligned both left/right and front/back as well as vertical alignment. The sides of the keys should be darkened. The soft pedal should be installed with cables attached and the sustain sensor should be in place and adjusted. There should be 1 12" cable which is connected to the Key Scan port on the TUSB interface and the opposite end not yet connected. Route the cable along the inside wall of the piano case extending toward the front of the piano. Use a couple of wave clamps to secure the cable. One clamp should be located close to back end of the key block. This will provide a holding place for the cable coupler. Connections at the soft pedal board. Key scan cable coupler. The coupler allows easy disconnect of the scan rail when the action get's serviced and also provides damage protection in the event someone inadvertently pulls the piano action from the piano without disconnecting the cable. The cable will automatically disconnect. Proceed to place the action assembly back into the piano. Obtain the cable coupler from the kit and connect the two 12" cable tails together. At this point the PNOscan II installation is about complete. We recommend you refer to the setup and operation of the PNOscanII system and perform the electronic setup and test before completely reassembling the piano.

As your piano action wears it may be necessary to repeat this setup periodically. If the piano action recieves re-regulation or repair, this process should be repeated. Keyboard Setup - Press and hold the "Key Adj", then press the Function button. Hold both buttons in until the 'Key Adj" light flashes at which time you can release both buttons. The system is now in keyboard adjust mode. All previous key values are erased from memory. To make setup easier, connect the PNOscan II midi output to a soundcard equipped QRS Pianomation controller or MIDI sound module. As you depress each piano key during setup you will need to hold the key down until the system accepts the key's down position. To indicate the position has been accepted, the scan II system outputs a midi note. Alternately if you don't have a midi device connected, you can reference the green light on the function button. Each time a key position is accepted this button will light. Once in setup mode, Start with note # 1 pressing the key firmly through its entire travel. Hold the key down until you hear the note play through the speaker or until the function button lights momentarily. It is very important that you hold the key down until it is accepted as a position. This is normally instantaneous but sometimes takes a couple of seconds. Repeat this process for each key until all 88 notes have been accepted. After this process no further action is required from the user and the keyboard setup is complete. Pedal Setup - Press and hold the "Pedal Adj" button, then press the "Function" button. Hold both buttons until the "Pedal Adj" button starts flickering, then release both buttons. The system is now in pedal setup mode and all previous pedal values have been erased. Use the following sequence to setup the pedals. Note that the standard configuration includes a soft pedal and a sustain pedal. The sostenuto sensor is optional. If used, this pedal adjusts in the same way. 1 - Enter pedal adjust mode as described above. 2 - Firmly press the sustain pedal fully down and hold. Watch the "Function" button for a quick green flash and then release the pedal. 3 - Firmly press the soft pedal fully down and hold. Again watch for a quick green flash and then release the pedal. NOTE: Be sure you see the quick flash for both pedals. If you do not see this flash exit setup by pressing the Pedal Adjust button and then reenter pedal setup mode and start again. 4 - Return to the sustain pedal and slowly start pressing the pedal down. As the pedal moves down you will see the Function button start to flash. This indicates you are in the range of a acceptable trigger point. At any point in the pedals position while the green light is flashing, pressing the "Pedal Adj" button will set that pedal position as the point where midi sustain event will occur. Typically this point should be at the same exact point where the actual dampers start to lift. 5 - Press "Pedal Adj" one more time to save the settings and exit adjust mode.
