The board makes all the interfaces of the JODY-W1 series modules accessible via connectors or pin headers, as listed in Table 5. Refer to section 3.2 for a detailed description of the available connectors. For Wi-Fi communication with the host system, the boards can either be connected through PCIe or SDIO 3.0. A USB interface connector and USB-to-UART bridge (FTDI FT232R) is provided for Bluetooth communication with the host system. The evaluation kit includes adapter cards and cables for all possible host interfaces. Two external dual-band 2.4/5 GHz antennas for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are provided in the evaluation kit. Follow the steps mentioned below to start evaluation of the JODY-W1 series module: 1. Configure power supply and host interface for Wi-Fi host communication as described in sections 2.1 or Connect the two antennas to the SMA connectors A0 and A1 on the evaluation board. If you do not use antennas, make sure that the RF ports are properly terminated to a 50 Ohm load. For coexistence testing of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, use coaxial antenna cables to increase the distance between both the antennas for proper isolation. 1. Connect the evaluation board to the host system via the included Mini PCIe or SDIO adapter card. The evaluation board uses zero insertion force (ZIF) connectors and flat cables to connect the adapters. To connect the cable, gently flip up the small locking flap of the connector, properly align and insert the cable with the blue marking pointing upwards and close the locking flap. 2. The LED D1 turns green if the board is powered on and the module should be detected by the host system. 3. For evaluation of the Bluetooth features, connect the evaluation board to the host system via the included USB cable as described in section Install the necessary driver software for the JODY-W1 series modules as described in the System Integration Manual [2]. 2.1 Host interface for Wi-Fi through PCIe To select the PCIe interface for power supply and Wi-Fi host communication on the EVK-JODY-W164, set the jumpers on the evaluation board as shown in Figure 2 and as described in Table 6. The VIO and VIO_SD voltages are set to 1.8 V by default, provided by an internal LDO. Refer to the JODY-W1 System Integration Manual [2] for a description of the voltage domains and section for the different power supply configuration options on the evaluation board. Connect the evaluation board to the host system by inserting the adapter card into a PCI Express Mini connector of the host system. 2.2 Host interface for Wi-Fi through SDIO The JODY-W1 series modules allow selection between 1.8 V and 3.3 V for SDIO I/O voltage supply. To select the SDIO interface for power supply and Wi-Fi host communication on the EVK-JODY-W163, set the jumpers on the evaluation board as shown in Figure 3 for VIO_SD=1.8 V or Figure 4 for VIO_SD=3.3 V and as described in Table 7. The VIO voltage is set to 1.8 V by default, provided by an internal LDO. Refer to the JODY-W1 System Integration Manual [2] for a description of the voltage domains and section for the different power supply configuration options on the evaluation board. The SDIO supported modes are not capable of supporting the full 2x ac throughput capability of the module. If maximum performance is needed, it is recommended to use a module variant supporting the PCIe interface instead. When SDIO modes are selected, the host interface signal voltage must match the voltage provided on the VIO_SD domain during both card identification process and data transfer mode. 10 Figure 3: Bootstrapping and power supply configuration for SDIO, VIO_SD = VIO = 1.8 V Figure 4: Bootstrapping and power supply configuration for SDIO, VIO_SD = 3.3 V, VIO = 1.8 V Designator Placed bridge Description J4, J5 J V: V: 1-2 J Bootstrapping: SDIO host interface selection SDIO 1.8 V; or SDIO 3.3 V Select 3.3 V from SDIO source for VBAT power supply J Select 1.8 V from internal LDO for VIO supply J V: V: Select 1.8 V from SDIO source for VIO_SD supply; or Select 3.3 V from SDIO source for VIO_SD supply J3 1-2 Enable khz LPO for sleep clock J1, J2 1-2 Enable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth J Enable power supply LED Table 7: Jumper settings for SDIO Connect the included SDIO adapter card with the flat ribbon cable to the SDIO connector (J13) on the board. Connect the evaluation board to an SDIO capable host by inserting the adapter into the SD card slot. The JODY-W1 series modules use an SDIO host interface, so only an SDIO capable card reader (not just a common SD card reader) will be able to transfer the data and interrupts correctly. You can use either a built-in reader (found in most laptops but not all models support SDIO), or a separate reader in one of the extension slots. Be careful while inserting the SDIO adapter into the SDIO slot of a laptop. Such built-in readers might be designed poorly and can be damaged easily compared to the ones found on the development platforms, which are more compact. 2.3 Host interface for Bluetooth The JODY-W1 series modules support a high speed UART interface for Bluetooth communication. A USB-to-UART bridge (FTDI FT232R) is included on the evaluation board to easily connect it to a host system via USB. Connect the USB cable to the Bluetooth USB connector (J19) on the board and connect it to the host system. Jumper J2 must be bridged (default setting) to enable Bluetooth on the JODY-W1 module. The 4-pin UART interface of the JODY-W1 series modules can be directly accessed through the Bluetooth UART connector J21. Refer to section for information on how to use the Bluetooth UART on the evaluation board. Getting started Page 10 of 23
