The compact size RTU 2012 could be equipped with different OTDR modules, at different wavelength and optimized dynamic range, as well with built-in optical switch up to 24 ports, expandable up to 128 optical ports (standard version up to 56, higher on request) by using external switch module. 1 Some features will be available late in 2013

The External Optical Switch is practically an extension of the RTU built-in optical switch. The switching signal is sent by the OTDR module over the same fiber connected between the internal optical switch and the input of the Remote External Optical Switch

4 4 FAST SCANNING CYCLE The RTU 2012 incorporates the last version of the Fast Scan Cycle software to determine problems on the fibers quick as possible to reduce the MTTR. The total scan time has been estimated in about 6 minutes to scan 24 optical fibers and about 9 minutes for 32 optical fibers. When the Automatic Fast Scan process detect a problem, it sends an alarm to OCN-MS and continue to scan the next fiber. As soon as the OCN-MS is ready for the OTDR measurement, the fast scan is stopped and the measure is acquired. At the end of the OTDR measurement, the fast scan cycle start again. 5 5 RTU 2012 AND OLD 6U NICOTRA RTU?... NO PROBLEM! The new RTU 2012 could be used in conjunction with the old 6U Nicotra RTU in the existing monitoring network without problem. The OCN-MS 1 will recognize automatically the RTU type and implement the right commands or acquisition setup to take OTDR measurement and dispatch alarm notification. 1 This feature will available in the late 2013

6 RTU 2012, AN IMPORTANT TOOL DURING AND AFTER THE INSTALLATION! 6 The RTU 2012 (as well the old 6U Nicotra RTU) could be used also during the installation process of the optical cable, without the Ethernet LAN/WAN support, as a tool, programming the RTU step by step to acquire OTDR traces. The operator with a portable PC locally connected to the RTU through the Ethernet port, by using the NrToolKit application software, could program the RTU to acquire OTDR traces. The NrToolKit application is normally supplied with the OCN-MS software, but it is also available the standalone version for PC Windows based operating system. The NrToolKit could be also using from the Supervisor Control Centre after the installation of the RTU, without the need to stop the normal operation performed by the OCN-MS and without the necessity to change the configuration of the RTU.
