4 MX9DTS-01 Diagnostic System Purpose The intended use of the MX9DTS-01 test system is to perform hardware tests on the VeriFone MX 915 and MX 925 terminals by a user that has some familiarity of these terminals. 8 3.0 Hardware Test Setup ALERT: The MX9DTS Test does NOT check for digital certificates, applications, or device keys; please verify these components after testing is concluded. MX9xx User terminal, also known as a Device Under Test (DUT). xx represents any number of the MX 915 or MX 925 or any other sequence of model number that would begin with MX 9xx. Terminals that are intended to be tested will need to be connected and powered on before testing the MX 9xx terminal. All test cards will need to be readily at hand for testing. If the terminal does NOT power up, please open a Repair Order in Verifone s Premier Portal ( 3.1 Hardware Configuration These components will be required to perform testing on the User s MX 9xx terminal. 9 Using the diagram below, connect the following cables and devices: SDS Dongle USB Flash Drive with secured software will need to be placed on the USB port on R Cable MX 9xx Multiport Super-Cable R Mx9XX Multiport Super-Cable will need to be connected to the P R Module MX 9xx Test I/O Module; it is connected to the I/O module with the connector. NOTE: IO module for MX 9xx has been removed from terminal for clarity; use the User s IO module if it came with the terminal, otherwise use the P R to test. Connect the MX 9xx power supply CPS11212A-3D-R to the power input on the Multiport Super-Cable R (US 120V cable or 240V IEC cable, depending on your requirements). 11 3.3 Electronic Cash Register (ECR) Test Setup For the Electronic Cash Register (ECR) test that uses the RS-485 protocol to communicate with the ECR, the following hardware will need to be connected: a) M ETH-R Support Terminal will need to be connected to the R Multiport Super-Cable. b) The power supply that comes with the Support Terminal will need to be connected to the R, to power the up the Support Terminal. c) CBL A ECR RS-485 cable will need to be connected to port 3 of the R Multiport Super-Cable and to port 3 of the User s MX 9xx terminal. 12 3.4 RS-232 Serial Communications Test Setup For the RS-232 Serial Communications test you will need to connect the following 2 cables to the R MX 9xx Multiport Super-Cable: CBL A Red Cable to port COM 1 CBL A Blue cable to port COM Ethernet Communication Test Setup To test Ethernet communication, connect the green CAT-5 Ethernet cable to the port labeled Ethernet on the R Multiport Super- Cable for the MX 9xx. Then connect the other end of the green CAT-5 cable to the port labeled Ethernet on the R Multiport Super-Cable for the Support Terminal. Support Terminal SDC Smartcard Test Setup Use a #3 Philips screw driver to remove the cover on the bottom of the terminal. To test the Smartcard, cut out the MiniSAM cards from the TST-CARD-MSAM Test Card (supplied). Insert (3) TST-CARD-MSAM Test Cards into the compartment on the bottom-front of the MX 9xx terminal, numbered 1,2,3. The picture to the right shows the compartment with one Mini SAM card installed Page Page 13 of of 24

13 3.7 Micro SD Card Test Setup If you have not already removed the cover on the bottom of the terminal, use a #3 Philips screw driver to remove the cover on the bottom of the terminal. The SD compartment is located above the MiniSAM slot 1 as seen in the picture to the right. To test the SD Card insert SDC00004 (Micro SD card) into the compartment labeled SD on the MX terminal. Micro SD Slot MiniSAM Slot Diagnostic Tool Setup Now that you have all the components and cables connected, apply power by sliding the I/O module (P R) into place on the bottom of the MX 9xx terminal. NOTE: If the I/O module is installed, then use that I/O module. 4.1 Tampered Device If a tampered device is indicated, assign a case in the VeriFone Premier Portal located at Please see tampered picture to the right: Fri Mar :23:41 Unit was Tampered! Status Register : 0x Last> SBF:03 ENC_SRC_REG:00 Status: Login 4.2 Tamper Determination & Data Entry If you receive a Tamper code, you will need to determine if it is an ACTIVE TAMPER or a NON-ACTIVE TAMPER. Active Tamper It is an Active Tamper if you receive two (2) Tamper codes separated by a coma on the second line. NON-Active Tamper It is a NON-Active Tamper if you receive just one (1) Tamper code on the second line. Unit was Tampered! 14 If you receive the following Tamper Warning screen, you will need to verify if VRK is present. Follow the steps starting in Section 4.4 to access System Mode and verify VRK. Navigate to the following tab inside the Diagnostic Tool: Unit was Tampered! Status Register : 0x Last> 03:000C10 Login Fri Mar :23:41 Home > Security > Key Status > VRK VRK Key Pair Status should state the following: Public Key: INSTALLED If VRK is installed, then this is NOT a valid Tamper and should NOT be recorded as a problem found. This error represents that the device has been removed from the stand; disregard this error. If VRK is NOT installed, then enter the last code on the second line in your Repair Order (03:000C10), and then send in for Repair and do NOT continue with the Diagnostic test. Status Register : 0x Last> 000C10, 03:000C10 Login 4.3 Non-Tampered Device If the terminal does not have a Tamper warning, you should see the following Bootup Screens shown to the right. NOTE: The information displayed may be different for each specific device. 4.4 Critical Stop Screen Page 15 of 24

15 At this point, most likely the terminal will try to run the user specific application or display a critical stop. If the user s application tries to start, please press the keys simultaneously and hold for about one second to exit the user specific application and continue to the Login screen to go into System Mode. If a Critical Stop occurs, please press the keys simultaneously and hold for about one second to exit the user specific application and continue to the Login screen. The pictures below display the Critical Stop screen and how to enter into System Mode. Critical Stop Screen Application Halted Screen The application should indicate Application Halted. 16 The Application Halted screen is followed shortly by a Login screen with Supervisor mode checked (shown below). 4.6 System Mode Enter the user s Supervisor Password or enter the Supervisor Password in the Password field to access System Mode. Page Page 1715 of of 24 24

17 4.7 Navigating to Diagnostic Tool & Selecting USB Memory Device Navigate to the USB/SD Memory screen: Home > Transfer Tab > USB/SD Memory Now select the USB Storage device (Flash Drive) that has the Diagnostic Software, this will be USB Storage 1. NOTE: It will take a few seconds to find the Flash Drive. 4.8 Selecting & Installing Diagnostic Software Next, the screen below will show the Diagnostic Tool software to install (.tgz File). Select the.tgz file by tapping the first field to the left of the.tgz file (where the green check mark is); now press the Apply button to install the software. Tap here to select the Diagnostic Tool software. You should now see a green check mark Page Page 1816 of of 24

18 When you press the Apply button the terminal will install the Diagnostic Tool software NOTE: Normal time to install files is only a few seconds. When the software has installed successfully the system will request for a Reboot of the system; press the OK button to Reboot. 4.9 Initiating the Software When the terminal reboots it will start running the Diagnostic program, wait for the beep (after approximately 5 seconds), and then enter the 6-Digit PIN that was provided to you in document DOC A_RevA00 that was inside the kit. NOTE: The PIN provided for the test system will differ from the one below. 19 4.10 Diagnostic Test Options Screen The screen below will appear. To automatically run the complete suite of tests, select option O Run Test Batch by pressing the ENTER button on the MX 9xx keypad; otherwise, select the number that corresponds to the test that you would like to re-run. 5.0 Running the Diagnostic Tests The first series of tests will require input from you; either press ENTER for PASS or press X CANCEL for FAIL. The next series of tests will be conducted automatically without any User interaction. 5.1 Audio Test During the Audio Test you will hear a ring sound from the internal speakers on the right, and then on the left. 20 5.2 Display Test The Display Test will run automatically, testing screen resolution and color. Display Test Screen 1 Display Test Screen 2 Display Test Screen Backlight Test Check that the backlight dims and brightens. 5.4 LED Test Check all LEDs (6 LEDs) and verify that they are blinking. 21 5.5 Keypad Test The following screen below will display the numerals on the Keypad. Press each number ONCE (only once) and each will gray out as it is pressed be sure NOT to press any key more than once, or the test will fail. 5.6 Touchscreen Test There are two (2) steps when conducting the Touchscreen test; the first step is to use your finger to draw a spiral inside a square, and then make an X. The second step is to use the Stylus and do the same thing; draw a spiral inside a square, and then make an X. Be sure the outer edges and center of the touchscreen are tested. When you are finished press the ENTER button to advance to the next test. NOTE: If your Stylus is not working, please go to Verifone s Premier Portal ( and open a repair order to replace the Stylus. 22 5.7 MSR (Magnetic Stripe Reader) Test First swipe the Limit Card labeled TST-CARD-HPM9 five (5) times, and then swipe the Limit Card labeled TST-CARD-HPP9 five (5) times to test the Magnetic Stripe Reader (MSR). NOTE: The MSR Test Cards will need to be swiped slowly in order to pass the test. 5.8 Smartcard Test When testing the Smartcard you will need to insert the Smartcard when prompted. When the display indicates Detected, move the card down to touch the display. Each card will need to be held twice to pass the test. The loop number displays how many times the test has been ran on the Support Terminal. 23 5.11 Test Assessment Below is the test summary after the tests has concluded. Press 9 if you want to keep scrolling through to see all the test results. Press the O ENTER key to go to the bottom of the summary. Press X to exit the test status summary page Test Status Results [PASSED] is the result of the individual test that was performed and accepted. [FAILED] is the result of the individual test that was performed which did not pass. Please perform the testing again, a minimum of one more time to verify that the test failed. [NULL] is the individual test that was NOT performed by the diagnostic testing system and is not required by the User to perform Diagnostic Test Results & Actions Taken By User If any tests have FAILED, assign a case VeriFone s Premier Portal located at or i_vsg_support@verifone.com to obtain access to Verifone s Premier Portal. If all tests within the scope of this document have PASSED, please retain the terminal. If there are difficulties with the terminal beyond the scope of testing in which this document provides, please contact your VeriFone Representative. If you are unsure as to who your VeriFone Representative is, please i_se@verifone.com. Page 24 of 24

24 6.0 Ending the Test 6.1 Options & Re-running Tests Press the red X CANCEL button to exit the Test Status screen and enter the Options screen where you can re-run certain tests like the MSR Test. If the automated or individual tests do not need to be performed then proceed to Powering Off the Terminal To power-down the MX 9xx terminal, please remove the I/O module on the bottom of the terminal by sliding the module up and out of the slot. After the terminal is powered down, remove the 3 MiniSAM Test Cards and the Micro SD Memory Card and set them aside because you will use these memory cards to test other terminals. Using the #3 Philips Screwdriver, re-attach the cover on the bottom of the terminal. When the power is removed from the terminal, the test application will automatically be deleted. When power is applied and the terminal boots up, the user specific application will run. Micro SD 3 MiniSAM NOTE: Your PIN will remain the same for the serial number on the USB Flash drive; however, the PIN will expire within a one year period.
